About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Can San Antonio Become a Better Bike City? Not on State Roads.

Jared Brey | www.governing.com

Efforts to improve the city’s streets for bikers and pedestrians are being held up by the Texas Department of Transportation, which has reasserted its ownership of state roads and is focused on prioritizing traffic flow for drivers.

Katie Nickas rides her bike around San Antonio every day — in the rain, in the 95-degree heat, at night, from her downtown apartment to her job near the Alamo and all around the extensive greenways. She’d even ride in the snow if it would snow. It’s practical, it’s a hobby, and it’s a point of pride for the volunteer board member at Bike SA, a local cycling advocacy group.

Nickas was born in San Antonio but left when she was a baby. She grew up in southern Indiana near the Ohio River, and moved back to Texas in 2013, she says, like a salmon returning instinctively to its spawning grounds. She used a bike to discover the sprawling city. But she admits it’s not the friendliest place for less die-hard bikers, because of the heat, the low-density spread of …

Officers received reports of the incident at the Gulf Terrace Hike and Bike Trail, 9201 Dishman Rd., around 9:15 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Beaumont Police Department.

The suspect, later identified as Jarmond James, had been "contained in the wooded area near the trail," the release said.

The man was arrested for harassment and taken to the Jefferson County jail.

Didn’t Expect That Many Strava Medals Biking Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on September 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 12, 2022

The last grand tour ended yesterday so bike racing will be spread out now giving me time for longer bike rides for awhile. Today I decided to bike the Spring Creek Greenway to Dennis Johnston Park. Its been awhile since I rode to that park usually turning around at John Pundt Park. On the way back I rode on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway from Forest Cove to Kingwood. To keep my streak alive I rolled out at 9:08 AM and finished at 12:55 PM. The bike of choice was my Cervelo Caledonia. I took two breaks, the first at John Pundt Park on the way back and the other at Jesse Jones Park to eat some animal crackers to fuel me back home.

I took two short side trips to add a little mileage, the first at the Carter Park leg to Treaschwig Road and then back to the greenway on the way to Dennis Johnston Park, the second went out of John Pundt Park on Spring Creek Drive before taking the rest break at the park. I biked 46.3 miles which was a good start to the week. There were other cyclists along the greenway but not many. Most I saw twice as I rode. The greenway maintenance crew was out spreading tar on cracks in the surface. Close to the US59/I-69 trailhead I heard a brush hog working on the horse trail. I took this picture after I finished eating the animal crackers.

9-12-2022 Cervelo Caledonia Jesse Jones Park
9-12-2022 Cervelo Caledonia Jesse Jones Park

Overnight a mild cooling front passed through lowering the humidity and dew point slightly. I could feel it as I rode in the shade on the greenway. It felt good after the heat on yesterday’s afternoon bike ride. The ride was long enough and warm enough to melt all the ice in my CamelBak by the time I finished the ride though. Weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 83%, dew point 70), partly cloudy, wind N 6 mph; finish 85 (humidity 60%, dew point 70), partly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph.

The winding greenway makes it difficult to used the 35×13 gears so I stayed in the 35×15 biking to and on the greenway. On the way back home after I left the greenway I changed to the 35×13 until the finish. From the AXS.SRAM.com ride report: total moving time 3:32:35, time using the 35×15 gears 2:44:12 and the 35×13 gears 27:18. Only 13 RD changes. I rode hard using the 35×15 gears on the greenway keeping my average speed above 13 mph which is hard for me with the turns and short inclines. When I looked at Strava there were a bunch of top results: 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals.

Dallas police seek driver in fatal hit-and-run crash with cyclist

www.fox4news.com

DALLAS – Dallas police are seeking help from the public to identify the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash with a cyclist Sunday morning.

The wreck happened just after 7 a.m., in the 12900 block of Kleberg Road.

Police said a man was riding his bicycle in the southbound lanes, when he was struck by a white SUV.

Video shows the driver involved stopped, got out of their SUV, but then returned to their SUV without helping the injured cyclist.

The cyclist later died from his injuries, police said.

Anyone with information about the driver or this crash is asked to call Det. Kenneth Watson at (214) 671-0015 or email kenneth.watson@dallaspolice.gov.

Video: Group of cyclists wearing little to no clothes takes to the streets of Houston with a message

Author: Zack Tawatari | www.khou.com

HOUSTON — Cyclists were out in Houston Saturday night in an effort to bring attention to cyclist safety in the city, and they did so in a peculiar way.

It was a spectacle on busy streets a group of cyclists pedaled through for the 12th annual "World Naked Bike Ride Houston." The name says it all, cyclists rode either nude or nearly nude through the streets of Houston.

The event’s facilitator, David Collins, says the ride itself is a protest to encourage alternative forms of transportation, like biking.

“Every city of any size needs a ‘World Naked Bike Ride’ on principle," Collins said.

His wife, Kayleen Williams, is …

San Antonio will add 2 new greenway trails for Cathedral Rock Park

Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

On the city’s Northwest Side, Cathedral Rock Park offers family-friendly fun and walking and cycling opportunities. However, the small 57-acre park could use more lengthy trails as most aren’t even a mile. I hiked about five, but that’s because I looped several of the trails twice.

Luckily, the city’s parks and recreation department told MySA that two new trails will connect to the Leon Creek Greenway segment inside the park and open around late September and early October. The Leon Creek Greenway offers 20 miles of paved multi-use trails and park connections. It’s part of the growing city-wide Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System.

According to the city, the new trails are the …

Highest Mileage Week In 2022

Texbiker.net Posted on September 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 11, 2022

I ended the week with the shortest ride of the week on my Lynskey Helix bike going on various Kingwood streets with a few short segments on the greenbelt trails. I started at 1:27 PM after getting home from church and finished at 2:58 PM. I rode 19.25 miles lifting the week’s total to 262.57 miles, the most in a week this year by about 8 miles. I took a break riding Kingwood streets for two weeks but this was the 19th time this year. To get to this many miles in the week I rode two longer rides and then four in the 30 to 40 mile range before taking it easy today. The image below shows two maintenance events but there was a third on Wednesday with the front tire flat while out biking. The average bike ride distance was 37.51 miles. For September I’ve biked 365.56 miles, 51% of my 720 mile goal. Year to date I stand at 7,101 miles. YTD 2022 is 26 miles behind YTD 2021 and 205 miles ahead of 2020.

It was hot today but the low humidity (for Houston anyway) and dew point made it feel a little cooler. Plus riding in the shade helped. Weather conditions: start 88 (humidity 58%, dew point 71), a few clouds, wind N 7 mph; finish 90 (humidity 55%, dew point 71), partly cloudy, wind N 14 mph gusts 18 mph. As fall approaches on September 22nd the daily highs have dropped a few degrees and the lows have too.
