About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Spending Millions of Dollars On Corridor Upgrades

Texas is taking another step forward in providing safe, long-distance travel options for bicyclists and pedestrians after TxDOT received $25 million in federal funds to expand two trail corridors in northeast Texas and El Paso. Both trails are components of the state’s envisioned Bicycle Tourism Trails network.

The United States Department of Transportation has awarded TxDOT a $25 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant to continue the expansion and development of transportation networks across the state that support economic development and tourism.

The funding will help build and expand two trail corridors in the El Paso area and Northeast Texas.

"Access to safe and efficient infrastructure is critical for Texas," …

30th Piney Hills Classic MTB Festival

Dave Bellante | www.tmbra.org

TMBRA is proud to be part of one of the oldest MTB races in the country. The track at Lincoln Parish Park was once raced on by the legends of our sport. I believe it’s the second oldest consecutively run MTB race in the country ( Road Apple Rally in New Mexico is first) This NORBA Nationals course has see the likes of Johnny T, Tinker and Nasty Ned toe the line. Don’t be fooled though, this is not a 90’s course. Over the years, it’s turned into a super flowy trail system with climbs, twists and jumps. There are lots of special activities scheduled to celebrate 30 years at this classic venue. We hope to see you there! http://pineyhillsclassic.com/

Weekend at the races: Hundreds turn out for mountain biking trek

By Tommy Culkin | theparisnews.com

On most days, the trails surrounding Pat Mayse Lake can make for a pleasant stroll, but on Saturday and Sunday, the Barber Hills trails around the lake were home to hundreds of mountain bikers in attendance for the annual Barber Hills Hard Labor Race.

In total, just over 200 participants took part in the event sponsored by the Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association, said race director Bryan Hargis.

Some Vultures, Cooler Temperature, No Invasive Plant Pulling

Texbiker.net Posted on September 6, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 6, 2022

When I got up this morning a little after 6 AM I checked my home weather station and saw the temperature was 69.9, the lowest it’s been since spring time. It did take long for it to warm up to the 70’s though. No invasive plant pulling today to delay my start time, just paying bills. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike to begin the ride at 9:16 AM choosing my Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman route thinking it would add 36 to 37 miles to my week total. Instead it added 39.17 miles because I added some extra streets before leaving Kingwood. Now my week totals 84 miles and the month rides total 187 miles towards my 720 mile goal. This was the 6th time biking this route this year. All but one ride was 39 miles, the odd one was slightly less. I finished the ride at 12:23 PM. When I reached Ramsey Road I took a short break before biking back to FM 2100. It was quiet except when a high flying jet began the approach to Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The weather has moderated from the super hot and dry days of June, July, and early part of August. Weather conditions for the ride: start 80 ( humidity 85%, dew point 75), a few clouds, wind calm; finish 87 (humidity 64%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. No salt stains on my bike clothes today.

Link to AXS.SRAM.com ride report. Only 17 RD shifts on today’s ride. I used the 35×13 gears for 2:01:28 with the light wind and flat roads.

3 Dogs In The Bike Basket On Labor Day

Texbiker.net Posted on September 5, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 5, 2022

I didn’t ride on Sunday, too problems to deal with but I was back on the bike today, Labor Day the last summer holiday. I tackled more of the invasive plants in my backyard before rolling out on the bike ride at 9:15 AM. I wanted to ride a long route so I chose my New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch route for the 6th ride this year. I added a few extra streets to the usual ones and rode 44.85 miles, more miles than the other 5 rides and finished at 12:41 PM. For a holiday the traffic was about normal on the main roads. I need to bike 572 more miles to reach my 720 mile goal for September. You can see the 3 dogs in the video.

9-5-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary New Caney-Roman Forest-Valley Ranch
9-5-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary New Caney-Roman Forest-Valley Ranch

Looking at the rides summary above 5 of the 6 rides were on my Cervelo Caledonia including today. The average distance for the 6 rides came in at 42.8 miles.

On the ride I made an effort to shift from the 35×13 gears to the 35×15 gears when I approached a red traffic light to make the start up easier when the light turned green. This resulted in 27 RD shifts according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I used the 35×13 gears for 2:17:37 or 33.8 miles. Total moving time was 3:18:31.

Cooler weather at the start time and I decided to use a water bottle instead of my CamelBak. I stopped at the station in New Caney at FM 1485 and US59 to refill it with ice but their machine was empty and I just added enough water to get me to the 7Eleven at FM 1314 and Valley Ranch Parkway. Wind was light which helped me get my overall average speed up to 14.1 mph from New Caney to Kingwood. Overall weather: start 78 (humidity 89%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind NW 6 mph; finish 83 (humidity 80%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph.
