About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

GoPro Blur Gone, Plethora Of Cyclists On The Road

Texbiker.net Posted on September 3, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 3, 2022

Not quite as early of a start as last Saturday at the HH100 in Wichita Falls but I was on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and riding at 8:23 AM. Maybe I could’ve start a little earlier but I hoped it was early enough to see other cyclists. I saw quite a few bikers starting on Atascocita Shores Drive, on the causeway over Lake Houston, Fairlake Lane, and Old Atascocita road before making the u-turn to head back to Kingwood. I rode my usual Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden, covering 33.21 miles, about the average distance for the 19 rides so far in 2022. I finished at 10:55 AM.

Starting this early meant the humidity was still high from the overnight cooling. It felt cool for awhile but once I started sweating it didn’t take long to soak my jersey and other clothing. The temperature was 76 at the start and 87 when I finished. Because it was was below 80 I decided to use a waterbottle instead of my CamelBak for hydration. I had enough water without stopping and it was still cool when I got come. The Polar bottle has enough insulation when it is less than 90 and the ride doesn’t last too long. Weather summary: start 76 (humidity 97%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind N 5 mph; finish 87 (humidity 74%, dew point 78), mostly cloudy, wind calm.

About 2 weeks ago I dropped my GoPro camera and cracked the lens cover. It didn’t affect the video except when I shot video looking into the sun a blur would be in the lower right corner. Yesterday I received the new lens cover and the blur is gone. To replace the cover you twist the cover right or left 90 degrees. I didn’t know that and pried it off. That’s when I discovered the twist was the correct way.

It was a busy ride shifting the Rival eTap gears with 33 RD shifts according to the AXS.SRAM ride report. Changing gears is easy and quick compared to my mechanical gearing on my Canyon Endurace bike. I rode the 35×13 gears 1:32:43 out of a total moving time of 2:27:55. That was 22.1 miles.

Paris native, BMX Texas State Finals champion gives credit to Paris Pump Track for his success

by Trent Reed | myparistexas.com

Feeling happy, accomplished and exhausted after taking first place in the BMX Texas State Finals, 16-year-old James Carlton gives credit to the Paris Pump Track as the driving factor behind his latest success.

“I started riding at the pump track built in Paris, where I met pro-BMX/Mountain Bike/pump track rider Shealen Reno, who suggested I try racing in Desoto,” James said. “I went and was hooked since.”

James’ mom, Keitha, expressed how proud, excited and relieved she was when James won the title.

“And he finished the day without crashing, no injuries and no …

A mile-long bike lane is coming to Almeda Road to help cyclists get to NRG

Ryan Nickerson | www.houstonchronicle.com

Biking to the rodeo may be a little easier next year.

Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis recently told Houston Public Media that a bike lane under construction on Almeda Road should be completed by the end of 2022.

The 10-foot-wide lane will be located between Old Spanish Trail and Holly Hall St. It’s intended to make it easier for the area’s residents, who mostly live in apartments, to have an easier and safer route to NRG Stadium via bicycle.

Joe Cutrufo, executive director of nonprofit Bike Houston, threw the organization’s support behind the bike lane project after they learned …

Heights serves as model for city’s bike future, advocacy group says

By Matt deGrood | www.theleadernews.com

Long known as the city where the automobile is king, Houston is working to shed that reputation with a host of projects aimed at providing bicyclists more options around town.

And the Heights and surrounding neighborhoods might be leading the way.

“I think in the core of the city, you can see the beginnings of a really strong bike network,” said Joe Cutrufo, executive director of BikeHouston, a local advocacy group. “Not only is it more extensive than people realize, but it’s higher quality than people realize.”

The Heights and surrounding neighborhoods are especially promising when people are looking for examples of what multimodal transportation might look like in the area, Cutrufo said, especially with some of the ongoing projects the city is working on in the area.

Crews in October will begin work on a plan to revamp …

Santa Fe Trail pedestrian bridge at Gaston-Garland-Grand reopens

By Renee Umsted | lakewood.advocatemag.com

The Santa Fe Trail pedestrian bridge near the Gaston-Garland-Grand is open again, the Texas Department of Transportation says.

It had been closed over the summer while crews could work on the 3G intersection in East Dallas, and it reopened Sept. 2.

Trail users had been using alternate routes to get around the area. Here’s the detour TxDOT ultimately landed on, and here’s the one that was initially proposed.

New access points will …
