About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I Saw Blue Today And It Wasn’t Rain. A Complete Ride Today!

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2022

I didn’t realize it until I got back home but I started and ended August riding the same route, “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch”. Those are the only times I rode the route in August too. I tried to ride it Monday but got rained out but today was rain free. I started the ride at 9:13 and finished at 12:01 aboard my Cervelo Caledonia bike. It felt good completing the ride I set out on after two days of riding in the rain.

8-31-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch Route
8-31-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch Route

The route headed north after I made my way through Kingwood, Woodridge Forest, and Brooklyn Trails to the US59/I-69 north frontage road. I stayed on the frontage road to the Grand Parkway (TX 99) where I rode that frontage road east to Loop 494. North on Loop 494 was into a light headwind lessened by the trees lining the right side. At Payne Road I returned to the US59 service road, over Caney Creek and into Tavola. I only rode on two streets in Tavola, Via Principale Parkway and Aregosta Parkway. Via Principale appears partially on the map and Aregosta is new and does not. Aregosta Parkway took me to Roman Forest Blvd. to begin the ride back to Kingwood. Roman Forest Blvd. west to US59, from there I rode the frontage road through New Caney to Valley Ranch Parkway. Valley Ranch Parkway went south to FM 1314 where I stopped at the 7 Eleven for ice and water. Crossing FM 1314 Old Sorters Road connected with Briar Berry Lane. Briar Berry wiggles and changes to Timber Lane where I entered Oakhurst. In Oakhurst several streets carried me to Bentwood Oaks Drive and back to the south US59 service road. Then I made the u-turn at Kingwood Drive and on to Loop 494. Kings Manor was next and then back into Kingwood.

From my AXS.SRAM ride report: 27 RD shifts, 1:38:19 riding the 35×13 gears, 47:33 using the 35×15 gears. The light wind helped me use the 35×13 gears. Weather conditions: start 79 (humidity 87%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph; finish 89 (humidity 69%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy, wind N 4 mph.

After yesterday’s ride I took the front wheel off my Cervelo trying to get the front wheel brakes to not rub the disc. After messing with the brakes I tried to put the wheel back on the bike but the disc would not fit between the brake pads. I wasn’t sure what happened so I took the bike to Kingwood Bicycles and he fixed it. I probably squeezed the brake lever and it adjusted the pads to narrow for the disc to fit. I may have hit the lever earlier when I loaded the bike for my trip to Wichita Falls because the front brake rubbed during that ride but not as much as yesterday. The wheel now spins freely without rubbing. Now I know to not move the lever without the wheel in place and if it does happen I can spread the pads with a butter knife. Next time I load the Cervelo in the Jeep I will use the pad spacers too.

All of this totaled 36.67 miles. and my August bike rides concluded with 923.9 road miles and 39.1 Zwift miles totaling 962.97 miles for the month. I circled the 2 Zwift rides on the calendar. After biking every day in July, in August I was on the bike 28 days for an average of 34.39 miles per ride.

This Wylie man should be dead. Instead, he’s making ice cream

By Sarah Blaskovich | www.dallasnews.com

Nothing about Will Gibson’s past prepared him to own an ice cream business.

He’s a former home theater salesman and a dedicated road cyclist. Gibson liked to eat ice cream but he’d never made it, much less sold it — not until he established Sweet Pearl’s Ice Cream, first from his home in Wylie and now inside a commercial kitchen in Garland.

Making ice cream might have saved his life, he says. For the second half of 2020, Gibson was bedridden following a life-threatening bicycling accident where he mistakenly pedaled into a bollard and landed on his head. He had a traumatic brain injury, despite wearing a helmet. He broke nine ribs and was hospitalized for three weeks.

“Doctors would say, ‘I don’t know what to do with you. I’ve only seen these kinds of injuries on a cadaver,’” he says. …

Video: New rodeo bike lane fills gap in high-demand area

Anavid Reyes | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Rodeo Houston should be prepared to welcome lots of bike traffic in 2023 because when this project is finished, anyone who can ride to Brays Bayou will be able to ride all the way into NRG Park. Here’s what it is:

This bike lane was announced in March just before the start of this year’s rodeo season– but the project didn’t make it to the finish line.

“Last year, BikeHouston approached the city of Houston looking for a better way to get people to and from the rodeo. They weren’t able to get something built in time for last year’s rodeo but told us that there were some plans in the works to improve the right of way for people on bikes coming down from Hermann Park and Brays Bayou along Almeda to NRG,” Joe Cutrufo with BikeHouston said. …

New Mexico, Texas officials visit Olathe hoping to replicate lowrider after school program

By: Megan Abundis | www.kshb.com

OLATHE, Kans. — Olathe, Kansas, is getting the spotlight from the Drug Enforcement Agency and other cities nationwide for all of the right reasons.

The Olathe Public Schools Hispanic Leadership Lowrider Bike Club is a program created for teens where mentors are committed to kids, and kids are committed to their goals.

The club focuses on mentoring students, lowrider bike riding and participating in community events.

KSHB 41 has followed the club for years when the program was just a couple of years off of the ground.

But this year, the nation is starting to realize the special connection happening out in Olathe.

“You know little old Olathe, Kansas, working with big cities like Albuquerque,” said Erik Erazo. …

Paris teen wins BMX Texas State Finals

eparisextra.com

Just two years after taking up the sport, 16-year-old James Carlton just won the BMX Texas State Finals. The Paris, Texas native credits his long hours of intensive training, supportive parents and a flexible schedule provided by homeschooling.

The teen began biking amid the pandemic as a way to get fresh air. When his parents realized he not only had a passion for BMX, but excelled at it, they worked to find him a proper BMX bike, which was no easy feat during the height of shipping delays and shortages.

The long hours on the track were not a concern in the early months when all schools were virtual, but when schools reopened in 2021, Carlton was faced with a decision – choose BMX or school.

It was at a race that a …

I’m Starting To Get Waterlogged

Texbiker.net Posted on August 30, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 30, 2022

Second day in a row rain interrupted my planned bike ride. I set out at 9:33 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike to ride my most often used route, “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman”. The weather looked okay but the clouds dominated the sky. Starting over an hour earlier than yesterday I was optimistic that I could finish the ride before the rain arrived. Was I mistaken!

As I rode east over Lake Houston on FM 1960 I felt a few sprinkles of rain and as I neared the eastern shore I could see the road was wet and cars had their windshield wipers on. I moved off FM 1960 into the Lake Houston Brewery parking lot to decide if I wanted to keep riding or wait a few minutes. I decided to keep on riding. The road was wet but not raining. That didn’t last long after I made the turn onto Fairlake Lane it started raining and I stopped at the church. There was a pickup truck there and the man inside said he stopped mowing the grass to wait for the rain to stopped. I went to the church’s porch, leaned my bike against the pillar and sat on the bench to wait for the rain to stop. It wasn’t too long until the rain mostly stopped and I resumed the ride. About 1/2 mile later I passed two cyclists going north and we exchanged hellos. Rounding the corner onto Old Atascocita Road and up over the railroad tracks I saw rain ahead. Looking for a place to get out of the rain I rode to the Baptist Truth Mission church to get under the porch. Not long after I arrived a man came out and asked how I was and I said wet. He drove off and a couple of minutes later two more men came out. We chatted for awhile as the rain stopped and then started again harder than before. One of the men was the pastor and he offered me a ride home. I told him it looked like the rain might stop but it didn’t. He showed me the weather radar on his phone and the rain was everywhere I was going to ride so I accepted his ride home. I wish I could remember his name. The two men told me they noticed all of the cyclists and rollerbladers passing on Old Atascocita Road and they put a faucet on the side of the church for people to get water. They put a sign out too.

Driving home with the pastor we chatted about family, jobs, and churches. As we drove west on Old Atascocita road we passed another wet cyclist. It was good to get home and not ride in the rain. Maybe tomorrow I will get to ride the route I planned.

Where, when, and how often do bicyclists ride and pedestrians walk? TxDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Program attempts to answer these questions in partnership with local and regional governments around Texas. The program includes a statewide network of continuous and short-term bicycle and pedestrian count equipment, an interface for sharing data and data management tools for local agency partners.

Bicycle and pedestrian count equipment may be installed on sidewalks, roadways, and shared use paths across the state. The data can be used in planning tools to measure existing patterns and model future trends at the site, corridor and regional levels. These data can be used to …

VIDEO: Rare bike stolen from Austin bike shop

By Meredith Aldis | www.fox7austin.com

AUSTIN, Texas – An Austin bike shop manager said a rare bike is missing from their shop after a man took off with it on Sunday. The incident was caught on camera.

John Whitsell, the manager of Austin Tri-Cyclist, said the person who came in their store was knowledgeable about bikes and seemed trustworthy.

"He did seem like someone who rides bikes very, very often and had some kind of knowledge about what bikes are good for what and kind of knew what he was looking for," Whitsell said.
