About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

HH100: Mountain Bike off-road trail race and rides challenge cyclists

by: Curtis Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Voted the best urban off-road trail in the entire state, the Wee-Chi-Tah Bike Trail saw plenty of action Friday during the off-road ride and run events.

We are less than 24 hours away from the largest 100-mile bike ride in the nation, the 41st Annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred, consisting of multiple events, including the Wee-Chi-Tah Mountain Bike races and runs.

“We’re kind of the stepchildren; we get to come out here and play in the dirt on Fridays, so we’re doing the off-road on our Wee-Chi-Tah Trail that’s out here that everybody can ride throughout the year,” HHH Steering Committee member Michael Boyle said. …

Woman facing multiple charges after striking cyclist with vehicle in South Austin

By FOX 7 Austin Digital Team | www.fox7austin.com

AUSTIN, Texas – A 52-year-old woman has been charged with a third-degree felony after striking a cyclist with her car in South Austin.

According to the arrest affidavit, a University of Texas at Austin police officer was traveling westbound on W SH 71 around 9:59 p.m. on August 22, 2022. The officer noticed a vehicle in front of him unable to stay within a single lane of traffic. The officer turned his dash camera on, and just as the officer began recording, the vehicle in front of him veered out of the lane, striking a male on a bicycle.

The officer and an uninvolved vehicle stopped to render aid to the cyclist. The affidavit states the cyclist was "bleeding in the middle of the state highway."

The responding officer says the vehicle that hit the cyclist, a gray Nissan, …

By Alex Carrion | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Events for the 41st Hotter’N Hell Hundred got underway Thursday and will continue into the weekend. Cycling enthusiasts from all over were excited to attend the HHH consumer show.

The MPEC was packed full of items to get cyclists ready for Saturday. You could find plenty of vendors selling cycling gear and clothing. There were also sports massages, packet pickup, and late registration for those just getting into town.

“Of course, the 100 miles is always an accomplishment you know there’s always a point when I’m out there on the road and it’s stupid,” Bill Frasier, HHH rider, said. “But I’ll get emotional because I’m like, ‘Oh my God I’m doing this. It’s awesome.’”

Riders and enthusiasts could not hold back their excitement while talking about one of the largest bike rides in the nation.

“That sense of accomplishment coming …

Video: HCSO: Man found dead in possible dog attack in Channelview area

Author: Adam Bennett, Jaime E. Galvan | www.khou.com

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Deputies are investigating a suspected dog attack after a man’s body was found just feet away from his bicycle in the Channelview area early Friday morning.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the body was found at about 1 a.m. with multiple puncture wounds. It is not clear how long the body had been there.

The body appeared to have been dragged away from the bicycle, investigators said. They added that it is not clear how many dogs may have been involved, but that the area is known for packs of stray dogs.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the body was found on Garlang Street near Sheldon Road near some commercial lots after it was spotted by a driver passing by.

The sheriff said the victim appears to be a …

H.E.A.R.T.S. Museum supports Texas Brotherhood Ride

www.itemonline.com

The H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum of Texas is set to support and welcome the Texas Brotherhood Ride at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Walker County Storm Shelter.

The Texas Brotherhood ride is an annual bicycle journey across the state to honor first responders who died in the line of duty and provide support to their families.

Tara Burnett of the H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum said there will be a presentation honoring two from Walker County and about 10 riders will be staying in town that night.

Riders must all be first responders and are required to have either a road or tri bike. Just like in their professions, they continue the teamwork aspect during the ride – riding together, eating together and bunking together.

Support personnel are divided into …

HOTTER ‘N HELL FORECAST NOT SO HOT FOR USA’S BIGGEST CYCLING EVENT

Author: John Woodson | granfondodailynews.com

The 41st edition of the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred gran fondo in Texas may not live up to it’s legendary name this year, it may go down as one of the coolest rides in decades.

The weather forecast for Wichita Falls on Saturday 27 August predicts a high of ONLY 90F degrees, in Texas that’s almost cool enough for cyclists to pull on arm warmers and vests when compared to training in temperatures well over 100 degrees for 22 consecutive days in July.

Nonetheless, over 10,000 amateur cyclists will welcome cooler conditions when they line up for a 07:05 start en masse – announced by the firing of a historical military cannon as United States Air Force fighter jets roar above.

The 100 mile relatively flat course (it is Texas after all) combined with …

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the bicyclist once family members have been notified.

ARLINGTON, Texas — A driver hit and killed a North Texas woman without stopping Wednesday night, according to the Arlington Police Department.

Around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, officers with Arlington Police responded to an accident between someone driving a vehicle and a bicyclist in the 1100 block of S. Collins Street. This is southeast of the University of Texas at Arlington and southwest of AT&T Stadium.

Investigators determined a woman was riding her bike across S. Collins Street near Hensley Street, when she was hit by an unknown driver traveling southbound on S. Collins Street. The driver did not stop after hitting the bicyclist, police say.

The woman was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency medical services. Investigators …

Not The Only Cyclist Out Riding

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2022

Continuing my quest for a 200 mile week I set off on today’s bike ride at 9:01 AM riding my Lynskey Helix bike. The previous rides this week put me in a favorable position with 125 miles before riding today. I chose my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 34.41 miles boosting my week total to 159.79 miles. On Saturday I plan on riding the 100 km route at the HH100 and go over 200 miles for the week. The “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” is the route I ride the most and this pushed the count up to 22 rides this year. I finished the ride at 11:48 AM. I will not ride Friday and Sunday thus the need to make up for the miles I would usually ride on these days.

At FM1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive 3 cyclists made a right turn onto Atascocita Shores as I sat waiting for the traffic light to change so I could ride east over Lake Houston. They are in the video briefly.

As I rode out of the driveway my GoPro camera fell from the mount landing on the street. I turned around and retrieved it. I did not secure it properly. I thought the camera was okay but when I removed the camera from the mount after the ride I saw the lens cover was cracked. Fortunately it did not show in the video. I contacted GoPro and they are sending a replacement. I expected to pay for it but they are sending the cover at no cost. Thank you GoPro.

The weather had a fall feeling to it with the temperature no higher than 85 until I completed the ride. I used my CamelBak thinking it would heat up more. Weather conditions: 80 (humidity 85%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind N 6 mph; finish 85 (humidity 69%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. The light wind was appreciated when it was a headwind. Going over Lake Houston on the way back I stayed in the 35×13 gears into the headwind.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report told me I used the 35×13 gears 1:36:41 but there were a few times when I should’ve shifted to the 35×15 and didn’t.

Cyclocross course for bike riders returns to popular San Antonio park

Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

Attention cyclists! The hidden paradise course at a popular San Antonio park is returning soon. The organizer of SA Cyclocross Rob Kane told MySA that the green tape will be back up starting September 6 at Lady Bird Johnson. It will run every Tuesday until the end of November.

The tape is available for everyone to enjoy and practice during those Tuesday evenings at the Northeast Side park located at 10700 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX 78217. However, Kane said people can register for night races on September 9 and September 23. The Cyclocross season will officially kick off on October 1 and will run through mid-December.

FM 917 from I-35W to BU-287 in Mansfield

www.txdot.com

Project Background

TxDOT is studying the FM 917 improvements project to identify potential solutions to transportation needs along the corridor. The project is located along FM 917 from I-35W to west of Mansfield in Johnson County, a length of approximately 10 miles.

This area of FM 917 does not accommodate current demands on the roadway, nor does it meet current roadway design standards. Today, FM 917 consists of one lane in each direction with no separation, no bicyclist or pedestrian accommodations, and sharp curves, including two 90-degree curves. These curves severely limit the safety and mobility of motorists by blocking views and necessitating drivers to change speed several times along the route. …

He said event leaders have changed the two criterium courses.

Shrapnel from the blast tore through his leg muscles. The impact also damaged his spine and injured his brain. Two members of his crew died in the chaos, one in his arms.
