About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

When Necessary A Bike Route Can Be Stretched

Texbiker.net Posted on August 20, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 20, 2022

With yesterday’s rain and riding Zwift I decided to stretch today’s route a couple of miles to make up for some of the miles missed. Rolling away at 8:05 AM under mostly cloudy skies with 99% humidity on my Cervelo Caledonia bike the route was “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden”. As usual I hoped to see some other cyclists during the bike ride. At the start of the ride I was at 174 miles for the week and by stretching today’s bike ride to 35.69 miles the week improved to 210.42 miles. Over all August miles is up to 654.3 and 631.6 road miles with a goal of 800 road miles for the month. This route averages a little over 33 miles for the 18 rides on it in 2022. I stretched the route by adding 2 street loops in Bear Branch Village and riding south to Spanish Cove Drive on FM 2100 before turning north to Huffman. I finished the bike ride at 10:58 AM.

High humidity stayed around for the whole bike ride compared to earlier in the week when it would drop to below 60% at the end of the bike ride. Today whenever I stopped sweat dripped onto the pavement and the last 5 miles my gloves were so wet I stuck my fingers out to couch the wind to dry them out some. At the end sweat ran down my legs. When I stopped at Pinehurst Trail Drive and FM 1960 another cyclist pulled up beside me and we talked about how the humidity promoted extreme sweating. I saw other cyclists as I hoped for and most of them are in the video or pointed out. Weather summary: start 75 (humidity 99%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind N 0 mph;finish 86 (humidity 81%, dew point 80), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. Notice the high dew point which contributed to the muggy ride. It has been many weeks since the temprature at the end of a ride has been below 90.

For the last several rides on the Cervelo Caledonia the chain made sounds calling for attention. On Thursday I received the Silca Super Secret Chain lube and applied it. On today’s bike ride the chain spun silently and smoothly. A good supplement between waxing the chain.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report data I learned that I used the 35×13 gears for 1:40:17 (24.3 miles) of the total moving time of 2:36:09 and made 19 RD shifts. The low shift count reflects the light wind and lack of terrain changes.

Man charged with second degree felony after 2018 hit-and-run

www.myfoxzone.com

Clayton Dunn was given a 15-year sentence after hitting a cyclist.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Jacob Martinez was riding his bicycle northbound in 2018 on a San Angelo road when he was suddenly struck by an oncoming truck.

Driver Clayton Dunn hit Martinez from behind at 6:05 p.m. Nov. 21, 2018 on North Van Buren Street and instead of stopping to help, he continued to drive off.

Martinez experienced serious injuries on site and witnesses called 911 to assess the situation. He was taken to Shannon Medical Center for further assistance but died as a result.

Meanwhile, Dunn kept driving with the bicycle attached to his truck.

Some evidence was left behind on Van Buren and law enforcement were able to find …

Jury Sends Dunn to Prison for Bicycle Dragging Death

By Matt Trammell | sanangelolive.com

SAN ANGELO – The man accused of running over 33-year-old Jacob Martinez on Thanksgiving Eve in 2018 and dragging him to his death was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday afternoon.

The jury trial of Clayton Dunn vs. the State of Texas has come to end after four days. San Angelo LIVE!, the only media outlet in the courtroom, reported earlier that the jury closed out day 3, Aug. 17, with the guilty verdict. The court resumed on Aug. 18 at 8:30 a.m. for the punishment phase.

The most impactful moment of the punishment phase came when Martinez’s mother, Patricia Hernandez, took the stand. She told the jury what she lost on Thanksgiving 2018. She said that they were all gearing up for Thanksgiving festivities by cooking and baking in the kitchen.

She had work the day of the accident and by the time she was home Martinez had already …

Dallas entrepreneur looks to increase living kidney donation awareness with new film

By Allison Hatfield | www.dallasnews.com

Donald Griswold is producing a 90-minute documentary about what psychologists consider society’s most extreme altruists.

Shannon Catalano climbed Mount Kilimanjaro this past March. This very paper told her story just a few weeks before the 44-year-old left for Tanzania to scale the mountain with almost two dozen others from across the United States. The awareness-raising effort was impressive — but it’s not the most impressive thing the Plano resident has done: Four years ago, Catalano donated a kidney to a stranger.

It was an act 33 years in the making, she says. “I kind of knew at 11 that I was going to be a kidney donor.” It wasn’t until she approached the milestone of her 40th birthday that she leaned into the decision to actually become one.

Some of us might take a bucket-list trip or get a divorce in midlife. Catalano’s heart took her in a much different direction. Now there’s a woman living in Colorado with one of Catalano’s organs.

And there’s a man living in Dallas planning an event where Catalano and more than a dozen other living kidney donors will tell their stories. …

Long-planned D-FW ‘super highway’ trail finally gets a name

By Sarah Bahari | www.dallasnews.com

A new sprawling pedestrian and cycling trail that will span Dallas to Fort Worth now has a name.

Welcome, DFW Discovery Trail.

Completion of the 66-mile trail, which will link Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving and Grand Prairie, is expected in early 2024.

This spring, the North Central Texas Council of Governments narrowed the name to two possibilities — DFW Discovery Trail and DFW Trinity Trail — and asked people to vote online.

In a nail-biter, DFW Discovery Trail won with 51% of the vote.

North Texas leaders and transportation planners have described the trail as a sort of “super highway” that will promote healthy living, …

Rain Outside, Zwift Inside Riding Watopia Triple Flat Loops

Texbiker.net Posted on August 19, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 19, 2022

It finally happened, it started raining around 8 AM as I sat down to eat breakfast and continued until the cutoff time to ride outside about 10:30. Not wanting to miss a bike ride I decided to ride in Zwift. Since my last ride using Zwift was April 15th I figured I would need to check my computer, OBS software, Blue Norcross AL bike and remember how to select which event to ride. The Zwift companion app listed a bunch of events but I didn’t find one with the distance (over 20 miles) and a good start time. I decided to create my own group event. Watopia was the world I selected and then I landed on the Triple Flat Loops route for 21.7 miles. While setting the start time I messed up and pick 11:45 PM instead of 11:45 AM. I fixed that when I noticed the start time was 12 hours away.

ZwiftInsider.com information about the route: “Originally published as Zwift Insider’s first Rebel Route in April 2019, “Triple Flat Loops” covers all three of Watopia’s “flat” routes, including Fuego Flats’ Tick Tock, Volcano Flat, and of course the classic Flat route. Zwift’s February 2022 update included this route as an event-only route that awards an achievement badge. The April 2022 update then made this route free ridable.”

The Triple Flat Loops route ride wasn’t too hilly and I maintained an average speed of 16.1 mph. I rode a little more than the 21.7 miles to set up getting to 200 miles for the week on Saturday’s ride. I’m an optimistic cyclist. Today’s virtual ride moves my week total to 174.72 miles.

I should’ve went to the Zwift garage and upgraded my bike. The skinny tires and frame looked out of place compared to my real life bikes. I didn’t realize I rode this route two times earlier in the year. Today’s ride was slower than the other two but Strava showed a 3rd fastest time on Rebel Route: Triple Flat Loops (1:18:33) which confirm my slower ride.

I didn’t livestream the ride because I now have gigabit internet. It took about 3 minutes to upload the 12GB video file.

Specially trained cyclists provide emergency care for West Seventh

www.fortworthtexas.gov

The West Seventh Street district is a very popular venue for area residents to enjoy a night out with friends. On Friday and Saturday nights, thousands of visitors and residents crowd the entertainment venues in the blocks bordered by West Seventh, Bledsoe Street, University Drive and Foch Street.

The large number of visitors creates a significant challenge getting emergency medical resources into the district for medical calls.

Since September 2018, a unique partnership between the bicycle teams from Fort Worth Police Department and MedStar has helped improve patient access to medical resources. MedStar’s Bicycle Emergency Response Team – BERT for short – responds to medical calls in the West Seventh District as requested either through a 911 call, or by Fort Worth police officers on duty in the district.

Since the program was begun, BERT medics have treated 466 patients, with 61% of the patients treated …

Northeast trail gets $18M grant

By Mary Madewell | theparisnews.com

The Northeast Texas Trail is the recipient of an $18 million federal grant to complete the roughly 45 miles of unsurfaced trail remaining in the 130-mile stretch from Farmersville to New Boston. The trail passes through seven counties and 19 rural towns.

TxDOT made the announcement Wednesday afternoon in conjunction with a combined $25 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant announced late last week for the NETT and for the Paso del Norte Trail in El Paso. The grant is part of more than $2.2 billion awarded to 166 projects across the nation.

“It’s my understanding we are going to receive $18 million and the …

Video: New dedicated bike lanes coming to Wichita Falls

By Tanner Deleon | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Phase two of a bicycle-friendly initiative in Wichita Falls is underway. City staff members are once again adding more bike lanes to streets in Wichita Falls, but first they are working with cyclists to determine where the biggest need is.

38 miles of bike lanes are currently in Wichita Falls. Nine miles are dedicated lanes just for cyclists and the other 29 miles are shared lanes for cyclists and drivers.

Phase one finished in December of 2021, so officials said it is time to begin phase two.

“Our goal is to get another 10 to 12 miles of dedicated bicycle lanes installed,” John Burrus, City of Wichita Falls director of transportation, said.

City staff is working with the biking community to come up with a plan on which areas in the city would benefit the most from …
