About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclist injured after being struck by driver who fled from scene

Author: Andrea Carden | www.kens5.com

When the driver is found, they will be charged with failure to stop and render aid causing serious bodily injury.

SAN ANTONIO — Police are searching for a driver who hit a bicyclist, breaking the man’s foot.

It happened around 9:52 p.m. Friday on the 11900 block of I-35 near O’Connor Rd. on the northeast side of town.

Police say a vehicle traveling southbound on the access road of IH 35 N. struck the victim while he was riding a bicycle in the road near the right curb.

The 47-year-old man suffered a broken right foot and was taken to BAMC in stable condition to be treated for his injuries. …

From single-speed to downhill, if it’s a bike, Fraser’s Christine Tucker, 55, will ride it — and rack up national titles

www.skyhinews.com

Christine Tucker was just a middle-school kid in Mississippi when she and her dad embarked on a mission that was ahead of its time.

Mountain biking was still in its infancy — you might even say it was a zygote. It was 1977 (or ’79) and Christine was 10 or 12 years old, she says. The youngest of six kids, her parents were so busy, “there are very few photos of my childhood,” she adds. But she loved riding bikes on dirt and up hills and over jumps so much that she and her dad built , effectively, their own mountain bike prototype.

“We found a bike frame in a junkyard and built it up using whatever parts we could find,” she said. “I think the frame was a Schwinn and I spray-painted it black. The wheels were 24 or 26 inches. My dad and I built it in our carport in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.”

The first time she took that slick, black machine out for a ride, “My front wheel came off and I landed on my chin and I had to get stitches,” she says. “My mom wanted my dad to take the bike and throw it away because it wasn’t safe. They bought me a new one but it was a road bike. I took it off road and on local dirt trails anyway.”

As she used bikes to launch herself off of jumps, she fell in love with the sensation of flying.

Some years have passed since Tucker was the biggest tomboy bike fanatic in her Deep South neighborhood; she’s 55 now and splits her time between Flower Mound, Texas, and Fraser. But she’s just as crazy about mountain biking …

Drier Than Last Saturday. Needed 17 Rode 33

Texbiker.net Posted on August 13, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 13, 2022

Saturday’s bike ride is when I look for other cyclists along the route. In order to improve the likelihood of seeing them I try to start my ride before 8 AM and I choose a route to get to FM 1960 at Lake Houston early. Today I rolled out at 7:51 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia following my usual Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman -Walden. The route is on streets I ride regularly but I change the order when I get to Kings River Drive at W. Lake Houston turning left there. Some of my other routes go on this street but in the opposite direction. Kings River changes into Atascocita Shores about half way to FM 1960. This gets me to FM 1960 in less time than when I ride through Walden and then to FM 1960. To keep the distance around 32 to 33 miles after riding west over Lake Houston I go south to Walden and then go north on Pinehurst Trail Drive. I rode 33.33 miles today for the 17th biking the route this year. That is about the average distance for those times. After 17 miles I hit 200 miles for the week and ended with 216.73 miles for the week with one day left. I’m making progress towards my 800 mile goal for August with 443.89 miles as after today’s bike ride.

Last Saturday my bike ride got rained on and shortened but no rain anywhere to do that this time. Lots of sun and puffy small clouds dotted the sky. The wind was more of a problem riding east over Lake Houston. By then I think it reached 13 mph and I changed gears to 35×15 because of the headwind. On the return ride over the lake the tailwind was much appreciated. An early start also meant the temperature was lower and the humidity higher. When I finished at 10:29 AM my arm sleeves were soaked from sweat as was my shorts and jersey. Weather summary: start 77 (humidity 94%, dew point 75), partly cloudy, wind N 7 mph; finish 87 (humidity 65%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind NE 13 mph.

East of FM 2100 I stopped and took these photos on Old Atascocita Road. The video has other cyclists I saw.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Generating watts with “wintervals,” this winter I decided to forgo the indoor trainer and do all of my workouts outside. I rode in the dark, the cold and the wet (no snow here in South Texas), and whenever the weather was particularly bad, I reminded myself that sometimes it rains on race day. I’m entering the spring race season feeling fitter than ever—and forever a fan of “wintervals.” The photo was taken by Guy Rubio on the Powerline Trail in San Antonio.

CWCC Cram500 #5 – Tour de Cul de Sac First Colony Edition

Frank Cano | strava.com

7 flats, 2 ripped tires (one with two rips), 1 dead shift controller battery, 8 CO2 canisters 1 case of brain fog, 1 case of cramps and about 800 corners

Rain the night before made the ride questionable. Can do 800 corners on wet roads at any reasonable pace. But went out any way. At the start it was Jeff Contreras , TK Akins [MCC] and me. Jeff hung around til the first flat and through the north and south Commonwealth sections.

TK and I took it from there and it was a bumpy ride. Got another flat not long after. Then we stopped by Virgil Skinner | FBK Cycling ‘s place to refuel, bum a few tubes and CO2’s and hang out for a bit.

By the Nth flat we were done and headed to Bagel Express for lunch. And BOOM Frank Breitenfeld ??????????????????? drops in!!

Final-ish 20mi and flats 17 through 28 were with Frank B we’re awesome!

Got some mid ride pickle juice and tubes and CO2 and pump from Durwesh Khalfe!!

Finally with visions of 125mi swimming in out heads, flat #7 finally convinced us it was time to go home.

I Really Can Start Biking Before 9 AM

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2022

With a before 9 AM start and a shorter route I finished the bike ride at 11:17 AM. This proved I can actually start a weekday bike ride before 9 AM. With 151 miles for the week I decided to ride around 31 miles today to position me for a 200 mile week on tomorrow’s bike ride. I biked 31.62 miles riding my “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route but I changed a number of streets, adding some and changing the direction on some others. Biking the route 7 times so far this year today’s distance was a little below the average distance but with the changes I made in the route I wasn’t sure what distance would be.

I saw two other cyclists and they were in spots I don’t see them in, the first was at E. Knox Street and the other was on Stonehollow Drive.

The route goes north along US59 and makes a u-turn under US59 on the north side of Caney Creek. I changed the route early on in North Woodland Hills on Oak Shores Drive going on a section I don’t ride very often. Then I went on Hidden Pines Drive north across Northpark into Woodridge Forest on Woodridge Parkway. I was back on streets I use weekly until I came to Auburn Cabin Drive which I rode for the first time among all of the construction workers’ trucks building homes. Back on my usual streets the next change was in Porter taking FM 1314 east to Loop 494. North on 494 to TX 99 is was on a rarely biked road and entirely new was taking the west frontage road beside TX 99 to US59. Antique Lane was the next street I haven’t been on for a long time. This took me to Loop 494 again. From that point it was back on the regular route until I turned left into Auburn Trails from Briar Berry Lane to get to US59. This was the opposite direction I usually take through Auburn Trails.

Getting to Caney Creek was into a light headwind which turned into a tailwind for most of the ride back to Kingwood. The temperature continued to be lower than earlier in the week but humidity was higher. Weather summary: start 79 (humidity 88%, dew point 75), partly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph; finish 89 (humidity 65%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind N 6 mph.

Gearing on my Lynskey Helix bike is different from my Cervelo Caledonia with a 46×33 versus the Cervelo’s 48×35 crankset. The rear cassette is the same 36×10 on both. The AXS.SRAM ride report today points out that I rode the 33×13 gears for 1:42:28 (24.1 miles) of the total moving time of 2:21:22. The easier 46×33 allows me to push the pedals into the headwind without going to the 33×15. With the tailwind I should’ve changed to the 33×12 but I didn’t think of that.
