About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: The economic impact of Hotter’N Hell Hundred

By Priscilla Meza | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Bikers from around the world are getting ready for the annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred and it’s only a couple weeks away.

The event brings a lot more than just bikers to Wichita Falls. It also brings business to local restaurants and hotels.

Lindsay Barker, Convention Visitors Bureau director, she said the outcome of that is a boost in the economy, something business owners are of course looking forward to.

Hotter’N Hell Hundred. When you hear this name, the first thing most people think of is the bikers. Locals might be proud of the fact that it’s the largest single-day bike ride in the U.S., but as for business owners in the area, they think about the amount of business this event brings in year after year.

“Normally, depending on how many riders we have, it can …

Houston – Twenty members of KPRC 2 Insider are invited to join Bill’s Brigade and help with one of the biggest Spencer Solves It efforts yet.

On Monday, Aug. 15, Insiders will help assemble approximately 100 bicycles alongside KPRC 2 staff members and on-air personalities for refugee children who fled with their families from Afghanistan one year ago.

These families were forced to leave everything they own and everything they know when Kabul fell to the Taliban last August.

They were brought here by the U.S. government to protect their lives, because many of them had helped U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Together with Walmart and Interfaith Ministries of Houston, …

Kept Cycling Wardrobe Manageable, Expanded Route

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2022

Past hump day and onto Thursday. Getting dressed for today’s bike ride I decided to wear a new pair of shorts which meant another pair were retired, trying to keep my cycling wardrobe manageable and not expanding beyond the available space. I thought about adding a new jersey but didn’t. Maybe a new jersey on the next bike ride.

With that out of the way I rolled my Cervelo Caledonia bike through the backyard gate onto the driveway and headed away on the ride at 9 AM. Yesterday evening my home weather station recorded 3.54″ of badly needed rain which impacted the weather for the ride. For many weeks the temperature at the start has been around 86 degrees but today it was a nice 77 but the humidity was 99%. The temperature at the finish was below the recent levels at 85, pleasant compared to the typical 94. The humidity was better at 71%, not as muggy as the start. Wind continued the single digit speeds lately from the north at 7 mph.

The “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route goes south and then east over Lake Houston. I added some streets to be sure I rode at least 34 miles to raise the week’s total to 150 and the extra streets did the trick with the ride covering 35.45 miles pushing the week total to 151.76 miles. August miles are 378.92 with an 800 mile goal. In Bear Branch Village Kingwood the street I thought would loop back to Tree Lane turned into a no outlet sending me back to Tree Lane. In Kings Forest the extra streets were Rocky Woods, Royal Trail Drive, and Laurel Garden Drive. Later in Walden I rode on Relay Road and Hikers Trail Drive which are not usually part of the route. When I reached FM 2100 I rode south to Spanish Cove Drive on the recently finished road to add to the distance. 20 times I bike this route in 2022 and the distances vary between 33 to 35 miles putting today’s ride in the upper part.

Another cyclist was out and passed me going the opposite direction on Old Atascocita Road.

Cadence data interests me and today I turned the pedals 7724 times. Below detailed cadence data. Combining this data and the AXS.SRAM ride report data I used the 35×13 gears 1:44:25 during the total moving time of 2:37:33.

Rolling By Dry Desert Drought Of Sikes Lake

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

My bike rolled me a few miles north on the Circle Trail this morning. A bike ride seemed like a possibly fun thing, what with the temperature barely in the 80s, and some cloud blockage of the sun.

Eventually I rolled to Sikes Lake, which, as you can see via looking over my bike’s handlebars, the drought is drying up Sikes Lake.

So far, as far as I know, unlike Lake Mead, no …

Mixed Up The Roads For Seventh Ride to SH 242

Texbiker.net Posted on August 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 10, 2022

For the 7th time this year I rode my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route to the north. I also managed to start before 9 AM with the Lynskey Helix Alpha 46 wheels rolling at 8:49 AM. Favorable weather with no rain threat and almost no wind. At the SH 242 turn a round I expected a headwind since the ride getting to that point was not too hard which I thought was helped by a tailwind. But the ride back to Kingwood was almost wind free except for what I created. The 37.32 miles was about average for the rides on the route this year. With 3 bike rides so far this week my total is 116.3 miles.

I changed some of streets from the previous rides. The first change was riding into Woodridge Forest on Woodridge Parkway. In Brooklyn Trails I rode 3 streets I have never been on before. And I rode through the new Peppervine housing development for the second time. It is so new there is only one house with a number of slabs waiting for the framers. The rest of the roads are ones I ride on regularly but not necessarily in the same order as today. In the video you can see what the construction looks like at the SH 242 overpass of US59. Loop 494 isn’t usually where I bike on this route but I rode there today.

8-10-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood
8-10-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood

I used a mix of bikes on this route during 2022: Cervelo Caledonia 4 rides, Lynskey R300 2 rides and my Lynskey Helix for the first time today.

Some data from AXS.SRAM ride report: total moving time 2:50:25, used the 33×13 gears 2:02:35. The 33×13 gears are not so tall that I can start from stopping without needing to shift to the 33×15.

Weather summary: start 85 (humidity 77%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind 0 mph; finish 93 (humidity 54%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind 0 mph. I am still sensing a less intense heat while riding and the shade feels slightly cooler.
