About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Project to remake part of Telephone Road into pedestrian-friendly boulevard wins $21M federal grant

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Based on concepts developed as part of a 2020 Houston-Galveston Area Council study on Greater Eastwood, plans for Telephone Road reduce the number of vehicle lanes to provide more room for pedestrians and bicyclists.

A Houston project aimed at taking one of the city’s most chaotic roads and re-imagining it as boulevard-like expanse where cars give up some space to pedestrians and cyclists will get a major boost from a federal grant.

The city’s Telephone Road project, estimated to cost $26.2 million, will receive nearly $21 million as part of the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, announced Tuesday.

The project along Telephone runs 2.8 miles from …

MetroBike to triple fleet, expand beyond downtown Austin

by: Kelsey Thompson | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Austin and CapMetro will begin its transition to an all-electric MetroBike fleet, tripling its resources and expanding beyond downtown.

In late July, Austin City Council and the CapMetro Board of Directors approved a joint agreement to expand the program and divvy up operational duties. Under the July 28 agreement, CapMetro will oversee daily operations and maintenance of the MetroBike program, while the city’s transportation department will “continue to provide oversight of the program and ownership of the assets,” per a Monday newsletter. …

How bike-friendly is Texas? Here’s how Texas cities ranked in bike-friendliness

by: Tyler Manning | www.fox44news.com

DALLAS (KDAF) — If you have been on TikTok lately, you’ve seen the growing popularity of alternative forms of transportation, like public transit, walking and bicycles.

There are great reasons behind getting away from driving. Walking and bicycling are great forms of exercise and are very good for your heart health.

A new report from ARRIS Composites is taking this conversation one step further and looks at the best cities in the country for bicyclists.

They looked into various metrics measuring a city’s friendliness toward biking infrastructure, such …

Houston’s new funding formula for building bike lanes

Jay R. Jordan | www.axios.com

Houston cyclists can now have a say in fixing and adding connections to the city’s growing bike network, thanks to a new budgeting formula now in play.

Why it matters: The city is in a years-long process of building 1,800 miles of high-comfort bike lanes through the Houston Bike Plan approved by City Council in 2017.

Of note: The city defines "high-comfort" as either protected bike lanes with precast curbs separating cyclists from car traffic or sharrows on narrower streets.
Every year, Houston's Planning and Development Department (PDD) is given $1.1 million to chip away at constructing the bike network.
There are currently 29 miles of protected bike lanes, with 48 miles in the works.

How it works: The new formula will now set aside 10% of the budget for smaller "strategic …

They put rumble strips on 1488 just west of Field Store two or three years ago "for safety" but all it actually did was cut down the shoulder space that we were able to ride as cyclists. "Safety" when TXDoT is doing something is never meant as "safety for cyclists", period.

Some Street Variety Atascocita South Then Back To Usual

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2022

Getting started biking today I wasn’t pushing to leaving before 9 AM due to the first day of school. My routes seem to pass a number of schools in Kingwood. So I began the ride at 9:06 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose my “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for some variety of streets. I should ride this route more frequently since I’ve only biked it 4 times this year. Today I biked 35.36 miles which is about the average distance. The roads go through Atascocita South and then back through Walden to FM 1960 where I return to roads I ride several times a week. I saw two other cyclists, one on Pine Cluster Drive and the other on Fairlake Lane but I did not capture them with the GoPro. I don’t normally see other cyclists during the week.

Weather conditions: start 85 (humidity 76%, dew point 77), mostly clear, wind 3 mph; finish 94 (humidity 52%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. It’s hot during the bike ride but the sun’s intensity feels less, maybe from lower humidity and dew point. I still ended the ride with salt stains and most of the water and ice gone from my CamelBak. I notice that the CamelBak shields my back from most of the sun and heat.

35th annual Goatneck Bike Ride deemed success by new organizers

By Monica Faram | www.cleburnetimesreview.com

The famed Goatneck Bike Ride returned to Cleburne on July 30 and was deemed a great success. The Tour de Goatneck came under new leadership this year when the Cleburne Education Foundation became the official organizer for the event.

More than 1,300 riders rode on four different courses ranging from 10 to 70 miles.

“Our youngest participant was 8 and our oldest was 81,” CEF Executive Director Paige Harris said. “That just proves that cycling is for everyone!”

CEF officials were thrilled with the turnout of cyclists but more humbled by the support of local volunteers.

“We could not have pulled this off without the support of local businesses, civic organizations and especially our Cleburne students,” Harris said. “We are humbled by the outpouring of help we had to achieve this huge event!” …

Climatological Peak Of Summer But Not Sweat Free Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 8, 2022

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about seeing a big fish swallowing a mailbox but I didn’t get any evidence. Today’s bike ride video has the evidence. I almost rode by the fish but I circled back and put him on camera. To do all of this I left on the bike ride at 9:23 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike following my “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. The route goes north along US59 through Porter, New Caney, and Tavola where I ride east to Roman Forest Blvd and begin exploring Roman Forest. Lots of trees and quiet streets as I rode away from the noise of US59. Back before I moved to Kingwood in 1990 biking to Roman Forest from our home in New Caney near Community Drive was a frequent destination, today I don’t ride there as much. Today was the 5th time this year. Today’s 43.6 miles was the longest of the 5 rides. This ride and the previous one included some streets I did not use in the other 3 rides. In Elm Grove village Kingwood I added a couple of streets and in Roman Forest I went east on Roman Forest Blvd. to the Estates at Roman Forest, a relative new bunch of houses. The return to Kingwood followed the usual roads and I finished at 1:13 PM.

8-8-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Roman Forest-Valley Ranch

The weather was friendly for today’s bike ride with light winds and decent humidity. It was 85 degrees at the start and 93 at the finish but the sun didn’t feel as intense. Today’s Space City Weather email headline, “Houston has passed the historical “peak” of summer heating” might explain that feeling. The email described, “… Based upon the last three decades of weather, the historically warmest time of year for Houston runs from July 29 through August 12. During this approximately two-week period, the city of Houston averages a high temperature of 96 degrees, and a low of 76, at Bush Intercontinental Airport. And if we drill down further, the climatological peak of summer during the last 30 years has come on August 6, which was Saturday.” All of this didn’t mean I was sweat free on the bike ride, just not as intensely heated. I still had salt stains on my gloves and probably on my white arm sleeve but not visible. I drank almost all of the water and ice in my CamelBak by the end of the ride.

Not many gear combinations used according to my AXS.SRAM ride report. The total moving time came in at 3:34:04 and I rode the 35×13 gears for 2:32:33 of that time or 34.2 miles out of 43.6. I changed the RD 24 times.
