About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

East Texas neighborhood supporting cyclists with popsicles, cold water, and encouragement

Tyler neighbors passing out popsicles to Tyler cyclists who ride through their neighborhood on Tuesday evenings

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – One East Texas neighborhood has taken the initiative to support local cyclists through encouraging words, hydration, and friendship. Every Tuesday, just before 7 p.m., those in the Briarcrest neighborhood start heading to their neighbor Hazel’s yard. Some people bring lawn chairs, others ice. It’s for their own fellowship, but they also share popsicles with those who come through their neighborhood by way of bicycle.

“These people are so wonderful with their cheers and encouragement. It feels so good. It’s almost like you’re almost in the …

11th 200+ Mile Week In A row

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2022

After church I got ready for today’s bike ride with the heat about 93 degrees. I filled my CamelBak with plenty of ice and water and rolled my Lynskey Helix bike to the driveway. The wind was stronger than the rides earlier in the week but no rain threat like yesterday. I pushed the Bolt computer start button at 1:29 PM to begin the ride. The later start meant I would biking Kingwood streets, greenbelt trails and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. I estimated the ride would be 15 miles long but it ended up at 19.5 miles and the week ended with 227.16 miles marking the 11th week in a row at 200+ miles. I made progress towards my 800 mile goal for August with the same mileage total.

The route is never identical in Kingwood and today I rode on Adams St. for the first time in several months. That probably why my 15 mile estimate was not very good. I skipped the northern portions of Kingwood.

Riding on the greenbelts and greenway kept me in mostly in the shade and the wind felt cooler than out in the sun. At times riding in the headwind required hard pedaling stressing my legs more than they wanted. My Sunday rides in Kingwood does not produce much speed with the average speed usually in 12 mph range.

Weather for the bike ride: start 93 (humidity 53%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph gusts 16 mph; finish 93 (humidity 57%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph.

Vanessa Garza leaves a better College Station

theeagle.com

Fourteen and one-half years ago, Venessa Garza arrived in College Station to take over the city’s Greenway, Bicycle and Pedestrian program.

At the time, the program was floundering, having languished unattended in various city departments before being placed in Planning & Development Services. To say that Venessa reinvigorated the city’s efforts with bicycle, pedestrian and greenways planning and development is an understatement and she often did so against some pretty strong headwinds.

During her tenure with the city, the Bicycle, Pedestrian and Greenways Advisory Board was formed creating the permanent opportunity for engagement by College Station residents in shaping the future of the city’s efforts at promoting alternative transportation and protecting key greenway corridors.

Under Venessa’s leadership, a new Master Plan was developed and adopted (since …

Houston gets new hike, bike trails, bus service

If you are a lover of the outdoors, there is some good news headed your way this year.

The Houston Parks Board and South Post Oak Economic Development TIRZ 9 are introducing a new nexus hike-and-bike trails and Metro bus service to the Hiram Clarke Road corridor of Southwest Houston.

The $635,000 project will include a new bus shelter, signage, crosswalk and “refuge island” in the medians. The upgrade will also include connections between the multi-use trails and three Metro bus stops.

Man, what a fast and totally satisfying ride! Jesse Cortinas – Blitz Racing kept the pace moving plenty fast at the front with other beasts like Bob Cornes, Michael Karas, and Brian Weidmann – Blitz Racing helping in rotation. The ride was extra special for me, because we were joined by Pat McGrath who was over the top helpful to me after I was hit by a car in 2013. Pat rode a bike on a trainer in the median of IH-10 holding a sign to help raise money for my monumental medical costs. People like Pat (and several others) who prayed very hard for me helped me recover so miraculously. That is why as always, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for allowing me to return to this sport that I love, and for another safe ride with great people.????

Being An Optimistic Cyclist With Undesired Consequences

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2022

I ignored the weather forecast being an optimistic cyclist and began the ride at 8:08 AM. The plan was to ride my usual Saturday route “Atascocita – Huffman- Walden”. By the time I was biking through Kingwood Greens I was beginning to wonder if that was going be possible with light rain falling but I kept riding thinking I would leave the rain behind. West Lake Houston Parkway was wet but at the Kings River Drive traffic light the rain stopped. I made the left turn heading to FM 1960 on wet streets. Maybe I should’ve considered why the cyclists riding the other direction seemed to be going extra fast as they passed me in two groups of three and a couple of single riders. But I pressed on to FM 1960. As I neared that road the rain picked up and I rode to the unopened Fuel Max station for cover. Good decision with the rain increasing, I waited about 30 minutes for the rain to slow down and heard thunder to the east so I changed my route to “Atascocita – Walden”. I rode across FM 1960 onto Walden and circled back towards Kingwood on wet streets but no rain. On W. Lake Houston Parkway a light light started but stopped after I rode a mile or so. Back in Hunters Ridge about to finish the ride light rain resumed with sunshine and I completed the ride at10:44 AM, one soaked biker.

After shedding a few wet items I went back outside and washed the Cervelo off as my bike shorts dripped water down the back of my legs. With a wet but cleaner bike I went back inside to change out of wet bike clothes.

The ride covered 23.66 miles, enough to make it a 200 mile week, about 9 miles shorter than the ride I planned. The week now totals 207.66 miles. I hope to add a few more tomorrow after church.
