About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Training With The Heat!

by Bikin Mike | wheelbrothers.com

Each summer I hear the same thing. “It’s too hot to ride. I’ll wait until it’s cooler.” “How can you ride when it’s this hot?” Or my favorite, “Only an idiot would ride in this heat.” What these people don’t know is that heat is my friend. People riding for fitness need to realize that heat is not the enemy. Heat actually helps them accomplish their goals of losing weight, getting lean and becoming a stronger rider. In order to learn more about heat and how riding in the heat will make us stronger, we need to look at five items.

ENDURING HEAT WITHOUT GETTING HURT

The first step is to understand the impact that the heat has on our bodies. When the temperature is above 91 degrees, the environment is hostile. Walk out into the heat and you begin to sweat. The increased effort to cool down causes an …

Taking Some Shade On Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2022

I decided today was a good one to bike the Spring Creek Greenway for my monthly ride. I turned around at John Pundt Park after taking two side trips. The side streets was at the Carter Park trailhead riding on Treashwig Road and Spring Creek Drive before returning to John Pundt Park. There weren’t many people on the greenway and most of the cyclists were repeats from earlier on the greenway. On the way back to Kingwood I rode on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway and connecting bike route streets. At the Forest Cove Community Park and pool crews were hauling away debris from the demolished town homes. No more eyesore buildings. I took a short break at Pundt Park before heading back to the US59 trailhead and another one at Jesse Jones Park to eat a couple of granola bars. So far I biked this route 7 times in 2022 and today’s 42.25 miles was the longest by .02 miles compared to the June 22nd ride. I began the ride at 9:20 AM. Maybe someday the greenway will expand along Hamblen Road to connect with the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway.

The photos were while I stopped at Jesse Jones Park to eat a snack.

I appreciated the shade on the greenway to help not feel as hot though the temperature was in the 90’s. I didn’t realize the wind was as high until I checked the weather after finishing at 1:09 PM. Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 76%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; finish 95 (humidity 50%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 18 mph.

San Antonio presents improved Broadway plan in hopes to regain control from the state

Author: Troy Kless | www.kens5.com

City of San Antonio leaders are hopeful TxDOT will approve the revised plan to reduce travel lanes and add wider sidewalks and bicycle lanes.

SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio has spent the past few months revising its plans to redevelop a stretch of Broadway from Interstate 35 to Burr Rd. currently controlled by TxDOT.

In January, the Texas Transportation Commission stated it controls the segment of road and that it never handed it off to the city, as it appeared to back in 2014.

In June city leaders say they presented a revised plan to the commission to reduce lanes without causing congestion, which was TxDOT’s primary concern.

“We’re hopeful that they can see we can have this same project by making those improvements to intersections. We’ve improved capacity, we’ve improved congestion, we still get the wider sidewalks and the bike lanes the voters approved,” Assistant City Manager Roderick Sanchez told KENS 5.

The city plans to reduce the road from six lanes to four lanes, add bike lanes, wider sidewalks …

McAllister Park Jumps Update

by Steve Barish | stormmtb.org

Sean Christopher and the Build Crew held a meeting on Sunday, July 30th to solicit feedback from the community on the project. The meeting was well attended by a cross section of riders from multiple disciplines (XC, Enduro racers, Freeriders/DJ, and BMX) as well as by representatives of Friends of McAllister Park (FOMP) and San Antonio Parks and Recreation (SAPAR). We got a lot of great feedback about the kind of design people are looking for as well as some practical advice on erosion control and armoring to aid in preserving the trail and the jumps. It was great having FOMP and Parks representatives there with us, so they could see the passion the community has for the location and that we are sensitive to preserving the natural area and …

Ride Blindfolded Or In The Dark Route?

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2022

If there is a route I would ride blindfolded or in the dark today’s route is probably the one, but I don’t plan on trying it. I ride this one the most in a year and I’m not sure why. Maybe its easy to streets and I like the scenery? The route is my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” which I biked 18 times this year. When I used Golden Cheetah one of the tabs showed the routes’ ride count in a colored box with a larger box for more and a smaller box for less times. All 18 rides are not on the identical streets as I throw in or take out a street or greenbelt trail segment. Today I biked 34.29 miles which longer than many but not the longest. I rode on a short greenbelt trail section in Bear Branch Village that I haven’t used before to widen the distance between two “U” shaped side streets. In North Woodland Hills Village I took a side street that I only started using lately. The rest of the ride was on the usual streets and roads. No other cyclists along the ride though.

I can’t seem to get rolling before 9 AM during the week and I started at 9:28 AM today but with a few less miles than yesterday I finished at 12:18 PM before it got to the hottest part of the day. Some clouds shielded me from the some at times but it was still hot. More training for the HH100. While it was still early I installed a small solar panel to power a video camera that I have put off for a while due to the afternoon sun hitting the spot where it needed to be. Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 76%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; finish 94 (humidity 51%, dew point 73), partly cloudy wind SW 12 mph. One think about wearing a black cycling kit, salt stains show up easily. I had some today though it took the return to Kingwood for them to get more prominent on my arm sleeves. The 12 mph wind made for hard pedaling going west over Lake Houston and I changed to the 35×15 gears to compensate.

My most often used gears, 35×15 and 35×13, were not too far apart in riding time today: 1:02:06 for the 35×15 and 1:21:56 turning 35×13. 6904 crank revolutions for the whole ride. Link to AXS.SRAM.com ride report.
