About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclist expected to recover after crashing into police vehicle just west of downtown

Ben Spicer | www.ksat.com

SAN ANTONIO – A bicyclist was taken to an area hospital after he ran a stop sign and crashed into a police vehicle early Thursday morning, San Antonio police said.

The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. near the intersection of West Martin Street and North Navidad Street, just west of downtown.

According to police, a man in his 20s on a bicycle blew through the stop sign and crashed into the side of an oncoming police cruiser. No other vehicles were involved.

The injured man was …

Melanie Salinas noticed there were a lot of active cyclists in downtown Corpus Christi, but the closest bike shop was Bay Area Bicycles on Airline and South Padre Island Drive.

“I thought bringing this type of service to the downtown area would promote the active lifestyle those downtown residents have,” Salinas said.

The new bike shop will offer four services to the community: a virtual cycling studio, bike fittings, free use of bike tools and retail gear.

Balmoral Blue Lagoon, Eagle Springs New Roads

Texbiker.net Posted on July 28, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 28, 2022

I didn’t realize it had been three weeks since riding on the “Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden” route when I started at 9 AM. I thought it had been two weeks. Riding my Cervelo Caledonia I went on several new streets in Balmoral and Eagle Springs using the map on my Bolt computer to avoid getting lost. I stopped at the Balmoral Blue Lagoon which you can see in the video. The water was inviting. I only started riding this route in 2022 and this was the 8th ride and the distance today was 35.26 miles, slightly above the average distance of the previous times. I stopped to check the construction on the railroad overpass at the southern end of Timber Forest. I show the status in the video. On the way back to Kingwood I took some interior streets through Eagle Springs on the way to Will Clayton Parkway. I saw two other cyclists in places I don’t normally see them: first on Trophy Place Drive and the other at Kingwood Drive and Kings Crossing.

No rain interruption during the ride though rain clouds gathered after I finished at 12:06 PM. It was hot enough to generate some salt stains on my dark kit. Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 77%, dew point 78), mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph; finish 92 (humidity 57%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Wind wasn’t too strong today and thankfully the humidity went down as the ride progressed.

The ride headed south with a headwind which though light took a toll on my legs. I shifted from the 35×13 to 35×15 gears on Timber Forest because my legs didn’t have any extra power and I thought I’d save them for the return to Kingwood, hopefully with a tailwind. So I consider the ride a recovery one. When I finished and looked at Strava I found a PR on Valley Lodge Interval Segment (2:38), a street I think I rode maybe once before. My AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the time close in each of those combinations: 1:16:07 in the 35×15 and 1:12:23 pedaling 35×13.

— KSAT 12 (@ksatnews) July 27, 2022

SAN ANTONIO – The Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer Ride is an annual cross country bike ride that helps raise money for cancer research.

This year, the goal is to raise more than $1 million.

Chris Cowley, of San Antonio, is participating this year in honor of his father.

”Personally, my father is battling cancer right now. He has bladder cancer. And, so I see what he’s going through on a day-to-day basis. And it’s been a struggle. You know, it’s tough. I mean, I think anyone who goes through this knows that it’s a difficult situation,” Cowley said.

Cowley is gearing up with more than 126 of his coworkers at Bristol Myers Squibb to help raise money for a great cause.

”So, seeing the toll that it takes, our goal is that at some point, people don’t get that bad news of ‘you’ve …

Austin cyclists reimagine mobility with ‘all wheels welcome’ group rides

by: Kelsey Thompson | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin cycling group will celebrate its one-year anniversary of trying to make city roads safer and more accessible for all kinds of mobility.

Critical Mass is a group ride that takes place in cities around the world. It was initially founded by Chris Carlsson and a group of cyclists in San Francisco in 1992. Austin had a Critical Mass group in the 90s and early 2000s before it waned. In summer 2021, co-organizers Raquel Ortega and Nona Allen revitalized the group with an emphasis on “all wheels are welcome.” …

Calling all Palestine TX artists! For this year’s Camino Gravel Challenge event, organizers are partnering with Dogwood Arts Council to sponsor a t-shirt design contest.

Event coordinators want to find a new t-shirt design for this year’s event that better represents Palestine and its east Texas roots. Rather than trying to design something themselves, they want to invite the community to participate in their t-shirt design contest.

The winner will receive a $250 cash prize and a $100 Walmart gift card, in addition to having their work featured on the official swag given to event participants. Entries should be submitted to …

Unexpected Rain Break In Auburn Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on July 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 27, 2022
Watch the video to see how the thumbnail shot happened

I guess I added several extra streets on today’s bike ride because the distance of 39.36 miles is the longest of all the times I rode the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd” route in 2022. Some of the mileage was while I was going through Elm Grove Village early in the ride and maybe a few tenths of a mile came biking through the new Peppervine community towards the end of the ride. Most of the time I ride this route on Friday but it was Wednesday for this one. The average distance of the previous five 2022 rides was 37.7 miles. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike and rolled away at 9:01 AM. The last two rides have been on the Lynskey Helix bike.

I took a short break in Porters Mill at the pool which was busier than my last visit. At the exit onto Gene Campbell Blvd. I took these photos.

At the start of the ride I didn’t even consider rain being possible but as I rode south on Briar Berry Lane I felt a few drops and at the entrance to Auburn Trails I made the decision to find a place to get out of the rain. The rain was slow to pickup giving me time to ride to the splash pad park and find shelter. Not long after arriving at 11:32 it rained hard for about 10 or 15 minutes. I gave it a few minutes to dry the streets some and resume at 12:06. At the Northpark Drive and frontage road there was no sign of rain so it must’ve been a small patch of rain. After I finished the ride at 12:54 PM and went inside I heard some rain hitting my skylight but not for long. I thought I would be home around 12:20 or sooner. The hot street surface evaporated the rain quickly. The photo below was not long after I stopped at the spalsh pad park.

7-27-2022 Lynskey Helix Auburn Trails-1
7-27-2022 Lynskey Helix Auburn Trails-1

Up to the rain it was hot but not very windy so I was able to get my overall average speed up to 13.4 mph. The gearing on my Lynskey is lower than the Cervelo which is why I think it takes me longer to get my average speed above 13 mph. Checking the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I saw overall moving time of 3:04:32 and 1:59:33 using the 33×13 gears.

Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 76%, dew point 78), partly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph; finish 89 (humidity 66%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Rain stop in Auburn Trails.
