About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The world’s longest charity bike ride made a pit stop in Whitecourt on day 50 of 70

whitecourtpress.com

Named after the distance between Anchorage, Alaska and Austin, Texas, the Texas 4000 is the longest annual charity bike ride on the planet. Each year, students from the University of Texas lace up their sneakers, fill their water bottles, top up the air in their bike tires and hit the pavement for a massive mission to cultivate leaders, fight against cancer and unite communities along the way.

On July 23, a large group of roughly 70 bikers arrived in Whitecourt. “They’ve done this previously, and the Rotary Club of Whitecourt had hosted them. When they came through Whitecourt, they enjoyed it, so they reached out to the Rotary Club and asked if they would host again, and the Rotary Club connected them to the Cancer & Wellness Society,” explained Aimee Grierson, volunteer with the Cancer and Wellness Society.

Bikers had to raise at least $4,500, ride two thousand training miles with the …

Pleased To See 3 Cyclists

Texbiker.net Posted on July 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 26, 2022

No chuckling on today’s bike ride but I did manage to start earlier than yesterday with my Cervelo Caledonia wheels rolling at 8:36 AM. I rode my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route covering 34.05 miles. I finished at 11:12 AM before the temperature had time to hit the max forecasted. I was pleased to see three other cyclists on Fairlake Lane by the church.

I ride this route several times each week and so far 17 times this year. The mileage today was slightly above the average for the route. Construction on FM 2100 is over for the section from Old Atascocita Road to FM 1960 and the work area on FM 1960 has not changed much in the last week or two.

Weather conditions today: start 86 (humidity 78%, dew point 78), a few clouds, wind S 4 mph; finish 92 (humidity 61%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. Fortunately the humidity went down after starting the bike ride.

Link to my AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

Fish Swallowed The Mailbox, July’s Mileage Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on July 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 25, 2022

I had to chuckle after making the right turn from Timber Lane onto W. Wallis Drive before entering Oakhurst. A large bass looking fish had swallowed the mailbox for the house on the corner with only the mailbox door sticking out of the fish. I ride by this location a few times a week and this was the first time I noticed the fish. Maybe I’m not very observant? I’ll try to get this in a video the next ride. This took place as I rode my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route after starting at 9:12 AM. I was riding my primary bike, Cervelo Caledonia, needing 18 miles to reach my 800 mile goal for the month. The previous 5 rides on this route in 2022 averaged 37.16 miles and today I rode 37.0 miles (or 36.99 miles calculated by Strava) putting me over the 800 miles for July with 819.08 miles and 6 days left in the month.

7-25-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood

The wind was light but riding back to Kingwood there was a headwind. I was surprised when I looked at my Bolt computer while on Briar Berry Lane to see my overall average speed was 13.9 mph. Apparently my legs had more power than I gave them credit for. The headwind was strongest going south on the frontage road from SH 242 to Valley Ranch Parkway. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report told me I used the 35×13 gears for 1:54:28 (27.3 miles) out of the total moving time of 2:56:43.

Maybe someday I can ride on SH 242 west of US59/I-69. Construction appears to be moving slowly when I was at the intersection.

Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 76%, dew point 77), mostly clear, wind S 5 mph; finish 92 (humidity 57%, dew point 75), partly cloudy, wind E 6 mph. Thankfully the humidity went down while I was out on the road helping to evaporate the sweat I generated. My kit wasn’t soaked beyond the max when I finished.
