San Antonio’s oldest bicycle shop reminds residents to share the road

For no discernable reason, a pit bull was licking my ankle bone — with vicious affection — as I was sitting cross-legged on the back-room couch of San Antonio’s oldest bicycle shop. Over a sleek, grey-green coat, the dog wore a khaki harness covered in prickly Velcro flight-suit-style patches. Her owner (and the subsequent owner of the shop) Hank Estrada had a career in the Air Force before moving back home to take the Charles A. James Bicycle Shop handle bars away from his 90-year-old father.

Towering Trees, Lower Humidity

After today’s bike ride I watched my video and it reminded me of all the trees around Kingwood. Riding on Mills Branch Drive the trees towered on the sides of the road. We are on the edge of the Big Thicket and it shows.

After getting home from church and eating a snack I rode out on the bike ride at 1:21 PM. With the afternoon start I rode around Kingwood on my Lynksey Helix bike until I finished at 2:55 PM. Lately its been hotter at the finish than the start but some clouds appeared and it dropped the temperature about 4 degrees which I appreciated. A few clouds looked like they might have some rain in them but nothing fell while I was riding. Today’s humidity was 24% lower than yesterday and I wasn’t as soaked from sweat when I finished. It took a long time for my bike clothes to dry after yesterday’s ride. Today’s weather: start 94 (humidity 53%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph; finish 90 (humidity 63%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph.

I rode 19.31 miles today ending the week with 235.97 miles, the 9th week in a row at 200+ miles. For July I am only 18 miles away from the 800 mile goal with 782.09 miles. Year to date I’ve rode 5,539 miles, 16 miles less than 2021 and 90 miles behind 2020. Today was the 15th time biking the Kingwood streets route but not all of them were the same streets.

Tour de Gap cyclists aimed to beat the clock, beat the heat

BUFFALO GAP – In a bike race, the quicker you get done, the better you place.

But even if you’re not racing – say, enjoying a ride with a buddy or your child – it still paid to get done quickly Saturday.

You beat the heat.

About 250 bicycle riders took part in the 39th annual Tour de Gap, covering distances ranging from 11 miles to 100K (62 miles). Riders rolled from the Old Settlers Reunion Grounds starting at 7:30 a.m., when the temperature was only in the low 80s.

Library’s New Book Bike Revealed

Join the Watauga Public Library (7109 Whitley Road) on Thursday, July 28th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in celebration of the end of the Summer Reading Club and the launch of the library’s new book bike.

The event will feature the unveiling of our new book bike, a superhero meet-and-greet, games, door prizes, cake, and free lunch from In-N-Out Burger from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. while supplies last.

An exciting addition to library outreach, the book bike will be used to get out into the community, visiting local parks, sharing library materials and information. The bike will provide a creative way to connect with people outside of the physical library.

I actually felt fairly strong today.??????? It was great to see some old friends at the QT station like Robert Dickerson & David Fluchel! Is It Possible To Wear Water?

If it is possible to wear water today’s bike ride was one of those times. It all began at 8:01 AM, a little later than I wanted but still early for me. Today’s bike was my Cervelo Caledonia and the route was “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden”. Humidity was 99% from yesterday’s much needed rain and early in the day before the sun dried the air out some. I hoped to see some other cyclists as I rode and there were a few out but no groups. By the time I finished at 10:32 AM my jersey was soaked, sweat was running from my gloves, arm sleeves were wet, and when I stopped for a traffic light it felt like a wet towel was draped over me.

Before the ride I needed 16 miles to reach 200 for the week and today’s 32.12 miles put me over the mark by 16. I’m closing in on my 800 mile goal for July with 762.77 miles with today’s ride. Today was a little shorter distance than the last few rides because I changed the first mile of the ride to compensate for starting after 8 AM. Looking at the list of times I rode this route this year all but one has been on the same bike. The road construction on FM 1960 hasn’t altered the route enough to make a difference since I can get through the area without being exposed to dangerous traffic.

I haven’t taken a day off from riding since June 13th and I’m wondering if my legs need rest. Fortunately the wind wasn’t above 10 mph today and I was able to use the 35×13 gears for 1:29:34 out of the total moving time of 2:25:20. A couple of times I should’ve shifted to an easier gear but didn’t which would’ve helped some. I did change the RD 21 times. It took around half the ride to get my overall average speed to 13 mph but this route doesn’t have long stretches of continuous riding until I get onto FM 1960. The starts and stops make it difficult to keep my speed high enough to improve the average speed until then. Link to AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

Ride weather overview: start 76 (humidity 99%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 88 (humidity 71%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The humidity is what made my clothing wet. When it’s 50% or below a lot of my sweat evaporates. The wind wasn’t too bad but I could tell the difference when I made the turn north on FM 2100 to start back to Kingwood it became more of a tailwind except for the short section through Walden.
