About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas 4000 en route

Matt Preprost | www.alaskahighwaynews.ca

The student cyclists are on day 48 of their 70-day ride that began June 3, billed as “the longest annual charity bike ride in the world.”

The Texas 4000 charity ride makes its way through Northeast B.C. next week.

Cyclists are scheduled to arrive in Fort Nelson on Tuesday, July 26, according to a news release, as they ride more than 4,000 miles from Austin, Texas, to Alaska, to raise funds for the fight against cancer. More than 45 students from the University of Texas are taking part.

“With the significant drop in preventative cancer screenings seen since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Texas 4000 for Cancer is even more focused on spreading our cancer awareness and prevention message as the 2022 team rides across North America this summer,” Scott Crews, executive director of Texas 4000, said in the release.

“While the team shares hope by riding for those …

New Route, Almost Lost The GoPro, Strongest Wind of The Week

Texbiker.net Posted on July 22, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 22, 2022

Today’s bike ride generated a new route name because it was a combination of roads that I ride but not in this configuration. It all began at 8:55 AM as I rode out on my Lynskey Helix bike. The new route name is “Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst”. I’ve biked these roads in the opposite direction and as part of a longer route that goes to Gene Campbell Blvd. I rode into Cumberland for the first time in many years and not much changed during that time as far as Cumberland Blvd. but maybe the side streets changed. Watch the video to see some of Cumberland. No other rides to compare with today. I finished at 11:42 AM biking 34.25 miles. The week now totals 184.53 miles with 200 miles in reach with tomorrow’s ride. My July goal is 800 miles and I’m at 730.64 miles. Looks good for hitting that goal early next week. The chart below shows how the year to date miles compares for 2011 through 2022. I am ahead of 2021 and narrowed the difference to 67 miles for 2020.

After going through the Rock Creek and Northpark intersection I lost my GoPro camera by either knocking it out of the mount or not putting it back in correctly. fortunately I noticed, retraced my route and found it laying on the sidewalk.

Performance today was good from my legs though I didn’t get my overall average speed above 13.4 mph. The wind was calm at the start increasing to 10 mph with 17 mph gusts from the west. This work to my advantage once I made the turn around at Cumberland heading SE towards Porter. This is the most wind for a bike ride this week. According to AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 33×13 gears for 1:57:33 out of a total riding time of 2:44:15. Below the breakdown of the power and cadence for the ride.

Weather conditions: start 85 (humidity 77%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 94 (humidity 51%, dew point 73), mostly cloudy, wind W 10 mph gusts 17 mph.

Early in the ride I set the 3rd fastest time on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:42), a Strava segment. I don’t think about segments before a ride, maybe I should.

Texas 4,000 to stop in Prince George Saturday

By Darin Bain | www.myprincegeorgenow.com

A group of students riding bikes between Austin, Texas, and Anchorage, Alaska to raise cancer awareness will be stopping in Prince George on Saturday.

The Texas 4,000 is an organization to cultivate student leaders and engage communities in the fight against cancer.

“The riders are trying to engage people in the fight against cancer, so they’re talking individually as they ride every day,” said Scott Crews, Executive Director.

“In the cities they stop in and they’re hosted in, they’re meeting with people in the community to talk about cancer prevention and awareness.” …

A little dirt therapy can go a long way

Brandon Lingle | www.expressnews.com

Sometimes the world goes quiet when you are riding a bike on a rough trail.

Life’s noise and stress fade against the grind of fat tires on dirt, the breeze and maybe a bird’s song or cicada’s hum.

Steer, pedal, breathe, imagine what’s behind the next turn or hill and then react. There’s no time to worry about strife, work, bills or politics while honed-in on balance, speed and momentum.

In these moments, everything flows, and the forward motion takes us further from the past. Sometimes gravity speeds up the pace.

A type of peace grows when focused on the trail. …

Video: Cyclist killed in hit-and-run crash, friends offering $50k reward for tips

by Melanie Torre | cbsaustin.com

AUSTIN, Texas — A cyclist’s friends are offering a $50,000 reward for help in identifying the driver in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

In March, 73-year-old Keith Culver was killed in Austin while cycling cross-country with a dozen people. The group was hit on East Stassney Lane near Burleson Road.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. on March 30. The group, consisting of 12 avid cyclists, was halfway done with their trip from California to Florida when things took a tragic turn and the cyclists were hit by a driver who didn’t stop.

Friends for 17 years, …

Harder Than Usual Efforts But I Didn’t Think So

Texbiker.net Posted on July 21, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 21, 2022

I rolled out on today’s bike ride at 8:37 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. Riding around Kingwood I then headed south going through Atascocita South and on to Walden before crossing Lake Houston. I saw several other cyclists along the way and I think all of them show in the video. I call this route the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” and this was the 3rd time biking it this year though I thought I rode it more than that. By the time I finished at 11:25 AM I rode 35.27 miles, a little less than the other two rides. I now need 50 miles to reach 200 for the week and 104 to get to my 800 mile goal for July.

7-21-2022 YTD Bike Rides Atascocita South-Walden-Huffman

Strava reported that my ride was harder than my usual effort but I wasn’t thinking that while I was out riding. The heat, sun and wind seemed to slow me down overall. It took 20 miles to get my overall average speed to 13 mph and above. Going east over Lake Houston wasn’t too bad but the return going west into the wind was hard. My legs suffered. According to AXS.SRAM.com ride data I used the 35×13 gears the most time art 1:30:08 (20.7 miles) but I thought I used the 35×15 the most (actual time 48:53). My fitness trend from covering 3 months using Strava data looks like this.

Weather conditions today: start 85 (humidity 82%, dew point 79), mostly clear, wind SE 3 mph; finish 93 (humidity 54%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. I didn’t notice any salt stains at the end of the ride even with all of the black kit.
