About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Camera Experiment Over. Tailwind Followed By Headwind

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2022

The one day experiment using the Drift Ghost XL camera ended and I’m back to using the GoPro Hero 10 Black camera. I got the ride started just before 9 AM with my Cervelo Caledonia wheels rolling at 8:58. After biking 82 miles over the first two days of the week I dialed it back a little riding my “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Valley Ranch” route for 32.39 miles, right on the average for the 5 rides so far in 2022. Now the week totals 115 miles putting me in a good position for 200+ miles for the week. I am narrowing the distance to my 800 mile goal for July with 661.11 miles. Year to date 2022 miles stand at 5,418 6 miles above 2021 and 105 miles behind 2020.

Hot weather continues this week and one of my reasons for starting somewhat early is to get back home before it gets to the hottest time of the day. I finished today at 11:43 AM, about an hour earlier than yesterday’s longer ride. It is beginning to resemble 2011 weather. My CamelBak had a little bit of ice left at the end of the ride and the last sip was cool. I retired a pair of bike shorts before the ride because they were showing signs of fading from the sun exposure over the year they were in service. Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 78%, dew point 79), partly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; finish 95 (humidity 50%, dew point 73), mostly clear, wind S 10 mph. Later today it may hit 100 degrees or higher.

The wind was strong enough on the return to Kingwood I shifted to 35×15 because my legs couldn’t pedal the 35×13 without slowing my speed. I thought the wind was stronger than 10 mph as the video shows the flags sticking out full. On the ride to Roman Forest Blvd. the pedaling was easy but as I went under US59 to begin the return to Kingwood I felt how strong the headwind was.

My GoPro camera performed without any freezes today. I formatted the microSD card last night on the advice of the GoPro forum. I don’t know if that fixed the problem but time will tell.

As a result of the headwind back to Kingwood I used the 35×15 gears for 1:33:26 (18.7 miles) out a total moving time of 2:33:07. Only rode 38:32 using 35×13. RD changes were 20 with 2 of those to correct a wrong shift in the last 1/2 mile. Strava says 2nd fastest time on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:41) which came early in the ride in Elm Grove Village.

Evan MacDonald | www.houstonchronicle.com

Kari Loya and his father, Merv, completed the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail from Virginia to Oregon while Merv was living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2015.

Sugar Land resident Kari Loya and his father, Merv, spent three decades dreaming about cycling across the continental United States. They kept putting it off: Life always seemed to get in the way.

But when Merv Loya was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease, they decided to take advantage of a short window of opportunity for the trip of a lifetime.

Merv was 75 years old when he joined his son on a 73-day journey along the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, which runs more than 4,200 miles between Virginia and Oregon. The trip, which took place in 2015, also served as the …

Family of Houston Rockets scout settle wrongful death lawsuit

By Staff reports | setexasrecord.com

HOUSTON — Managing partner Benny Agosto Jr. and attorney Edward Festeryga of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner announced today that they have reached a confidential settlement on behalf of former Houston Rockets scout Sheffery Brent “BJ” Johnson, his mother, widow, and son against Pulice Construction, a press release states.

The press release states that Johnson was a beloved family man, an admired executive of the Houston Rockets and a globally renowned member of the NBA community. He was killed while riding his bicycle due to a dangerously unfinished and inadequately marked section of the sidewalk.

On the early evening of Oct. 15, 2020, Johnson was enjoying a bicycle ride along Almeda Parkway in Houston. He was wearing his helmet, headlamp, and customary Houston Rockets hat—the team for which he worked since the 1994-1995 championship season. During his ride, Johnson entered a section of the roadway that was …

Camera Change Not Good, Cattle In The Shade I’m Not

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 19, 2022

I decided to change my video camera from the GoPro to the Drift Ghost XL for today’s bike ride. This delayed my started until 9:30 AM while figured out the mount and microphone setup to use on my Lynskey Helix, the bike I was going to ride today. The route for today’s bike ride was “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” with a few extra streets in the first 4 or 5 miles. Those put the distance at 39.18 miles, about average for the 5 times biking the route in 2022.

The Drift Ghost XL video and sound is not as good as the GoPro as evidenced by the video above. I don’t know if changing some settings will help. These photos show the camera setup for the camera today. The microphone attachment method is not elegant.

It was hot with later start with 87 degrees but the humidity wasn’t so high compared to yesterday’s start time. When I finished at 12:44 it was 95 and my arm sleeves and gloves showed salt stains. Riding west over Lake Houston I thought the headwind was stronger than 10 mph and I shifted to 33×15 from the 33×13 to ease up on my legs. They appreciated it and agreed to continue turning the pedals. Weather for the ride: start 87 (humidity 71%, dew point 77), a few clouds, wind S 7 mph; finish 95 (humidity 49%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph. The wind was helpful getting to Ramsey Road but the turn around back to FM 2100 was not easy with a stout headwind and not many trees to slow it down. As a sign of the heat most of the cows in the pastures beside the road were gathered under the trees. There were a few cows out braving the sun and heat as they grazed.
