About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Flower Mound crew pedals to victory at charity bike race

www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Last month, five Flower Mound residents who occasionally meet up to ride mountain bikes on Northshore Trail took first place in a 24-hour mountain bike relay race at Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Despite being recreational riders and only having five team members in a division designed for six or more riders, the 75022 Bike Crew managed to complete more 8 mile laps in a 24-hour period than the competition.

The group of Flower Mound dads and one of their sons, Lochlan Messett, an …

Volunteer group uses ‘Ghost Bikes’ to memorialize cyclist killed on Austin roadways

By Lakisha Lemons | spectrumlocalnews.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Rhodney Williams is a retired school teacher with a passion for helping others in Central Texas.

He’s an active volunteer with the Austin Ghost Bike Project, a volunteer-based group that places and maintains white bikes to memorialize cyclist who were fatally struck on the roadways.

“It always puts me in a solemn mood, like you’re about to walk up to something that represents the death of someone,” said Williams.

Williams showed us what goes into creating a ‘Ghost Bike’, everything from stripping an old bike down, removing tires, and painting them white. He believes placing the Ghost Bikes near or …

4th Ride To Roman Forest, Motorcyclist Down In Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2022

I can’t help noticing how the price of gas has went down. As I rode back to Kingwood the WalMart station in New Caney had regular for $3.819 per gallon, the lowest I’ve seen anywhere. Good thing I didn’t rush out last week to buy gas. This is good but I bike many more miles than I drive. So far this year I drove my Jeep about 4,900 miles and I have biked 5,347 miles.

Wheels down for today’s bike ride at 8:49 AM. With the Tour de France on a rest day I decided to ride a 40+ mile route and chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” one. Typically this ride is a little over 40 miles but I altered the early portion and while in Roman Forest I went east on Roman Forest Blvd. to check out the Estates at Roman Forest. Some new houses there with a couple still under construction or not occupied yet. The road there could use some attention, the asphalt was bumpy. Those changes meant I rode 43.40 miles as I completed the 4th time using this route.

When I began the ride my legs weren’t feeling that great but as the ride progressed they felt better. Getting to Roman Forest the light wind was more helpful than harmful. On the way back to Kingwood that flipped somewhat. I pedaled harder but I was able to keep my overall average speed at 14.3 mph until I returned to Kingwood.

Back in Kingwood as I turned onto the greenbelt beside Kingwood Drive heading east I saw a motorcycle standing in the median grass. About 50 feet away a man was laying in the grass with a helmet on. He moved some and a lady stopped, walked over to him and the man reached out towards her. He took his helmet off and sit up some. He seemed to be talking but maybe disoriented. I rode ahead and pulled into the fire station which is nearby to alert them but a lady pulled in and went to the door first to tell them. I hope he is all right.

The AXS.SRAM.com ride report showed the total moving time at 3:07:16 for the ride. I used the 35×13 gears for 2:11:35 of that or 32.1 miles. I made 23 RD changes. I turned the pedals 8,565 times on the ride.

I finished the ride at 12:02 before it got to hottest part of the day. This week could see 100 degrees each day. Weather conditions for my bike ride: start 82 (humidity 83%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph; finish 91 (humidity 56%, dew point 73), mostly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph.

Blazing Saddles: Tour de Paris a hot draw in the heat of summer

By Kareyn Hellmann | theparisnews.com

For 38 years, the annual Tour de Paris bicycle rally has brought participants from across the South to travel marked bike routes ranging from 14 to 80 miles in length. The rally returned to the Love Civic Center this Saturday, drawing 1,130 registered cyclists and more than 650 volunteers to each of the scenic routes around Paris and the neighboring cities and counties.

The ride spanned three counties: Lamar, Fannin and Delta. Though popular routes included the 14-mile ride through downtown Paris and up to Reno, others went as far as 80 miles along county roads. Of those registered, 950 cycled in the event.

Though anyone can participate, the lengthy rides are not for the faint of heart. When the ride began at 8 a.m., temperatures had already risen to 80 degrees, growing …

Kingwood, Forest Cove, San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on July 17, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 17, 2022

It’s July and hot in Houston. Starting a bike ride after noon usually means hot weather and today full sun. It began at 1:06 PM with me riding my Lynskey Helix bike. With the late start I decided to ride Kingwood streets, Forest Cove and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. I guessed I would ride 12 to 15 miles but I ended up riding 17.18 miles finishing the week with 234.78 miles and July to date at 546.11 miles. My goal for July is 800 miles. Year to date I’ve rode 5,303 miles. I’m 18 miles behind 2021 and 144 behind 2020.

Weather conditions: Start 94 (humidity 39%, dew point 65), a few clouds, wind S 8 mph; finish 95 (humidity 47%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. The coming week looks to be just as hot and dry. My CamelBak helped keep the sun from hitting my back and there was ice left when I finished at 2:33 but it was a shorter ride than usual.

Back in Kingwood after riding on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway I stopped on the greenbelt and took these photos.
