About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Plano cyclist says too many drivers ignore red lights at bike trails

By J.D. Miles | www.cbsnews.com

PLANO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – There’s a potential safety risk if you enjoy jogging, taking a walk, or riding a bike on paved trails.

Traffic lights are supposed to protect you when those trails cross busy North Texas streets. But CBS 11 camera’s documented a threat to trail users at a popular crossing in Plano.

It took only seconds to capture people ignoring this red light that’s supposed to protect people on the trail when crossing.

An avid cyclist who’s had close calls at this trail says it’s only a matter of time before someone is injured or worse.

Halfway into his …

Cycle Crusade: Texas bicyclist explores the Great Plains

By JOHN SHELMAN | www.ctnewsonline.com

Jerod Foster, associate professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, prepares a meal for himself and 13 students Tuesday while camping at the Cowley State Lake. The group is making a 900-mile trip across the Great Plains as a special project. The students serve as a support group for Foster, who is making the journey on a bicycle, traveling the entire route on gravel roads.

Riding a bicycle in Kansas through the intense July heat can be a challenge for any rider. Few people know that better than Jerod Foster, an associate professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Foster is embarking on a 900-mile trip across the Great Plains as a college project. To make the expedition even more of a challenge, he will be riding on dirt roads the entire distance.

Associate Professor Robert Peaslee said the journey began in Stillwater, Okla., and will end in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He said that Foster and the 13 students who are accompanying him reached the Arkansas City area on Tuesday and made camp at the Cowley State Lake. He said the group would strike out for Emporia early Wednesday morning.

Foster said the project was …

Jorge A. Vela | www.lmtonline.com

Images from Ana Guajardo’s 1,555 mile journey from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon to Chicago, Illinois as she stopped in Laredo, Texas on Wednesday July 13, 2022 to rest, have a dinner and also get some small repairs done to her bicycle.

One cyclist with a mission passed through the Gateway City this week as she entered the leg of her journey in the United States that started in northern Mexico and will end in Chicago, Illinois.

Ana Guajardo is the co-founder and member of the Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, or Center for United Workers, in southeastern Chicago. She decided to go on a more than 2,503-kilometer journey, or approximately 1,555 miles, from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon to Illinois to raise awareness of her organization and cause, as they are currently constructing their first-ever building in the city that offers help to migrants and minorities. Her first stop in the U.S. was in the Gateway City.

Rolling In The HEAT To Sikes Lake And Beyond

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

My bike rolled me around Sikes Lake and some other locations this HOT Saturday in July.

I don’t know why, but I am not enjoying the bike riding like I used to. The HEAT is easier to take whilst bike riding, compared to fast walking. Rolling through the air creates a cooling wind chill, adding to the chill factor of the wind speed.

But, as soon as I stop rolling I quickly overheat and become a sweaty mess, which adds to …

GoPro Burps, A Few Other Cyclists, 200 Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on July 16, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 16, 2022

The earliest start of the week today rolling away at 7:47 AM. I rode the usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden”, hoping to see some other cyclists. A few passed me on the east side of Lake Houston but I think some of the regulars were saving their legs for the Katy Flatland Century tomorrow. Sadly my GoPro froze when I wanted to record the cyclists I did see only catching one on Old Atascocita Road of the 6 I saw. My Cervelo Caledonia was the bike for today’s ride going 33.23 miles.

At the beginning of the ride I needed 16 miles to hit 200+ for the week and I reached that mark. This route is a busy one for me with 14 rides so far in 2022. Nothing new about the roads but I change the order on some to get to FM 1960 quicker than when I ride the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I moved to some side streets off of Atascocita Shores Drive today adding a little to the distance by the time I got to FM 1960.

It was humid at the start with the temperature in the mid 70’s. It dropped by the time I finished at 10:19 but I was still soaked with sweat. Wind wasn’t a factor and my legs did well. Weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 99%, dew point 76), a few clouds, wind N 5 mph; finish 87 (humidity 69%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind S 4 mph.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 35×13 gears the most time at 1:30:00 (21.7 miles) out of the total riding time of 2:25:54. I changed the RD 25 times over the ride.

Time For Some New Kit Items. Moderate Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2022

Today I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on what I call the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. It began at 9:02 AM and finished at 11:48 AM. A few little things kept me from starting before 9 AM. The weather continued the theme from yesterday of not as hot as earlier in the week. Today’s 35.49 miles was about average of the 9 times I’ve biked this route in 2022. I could’ve added a couple of miles going through Oakhurst but I decided to stay on the south bound frontage road from Azalea Blvd. to Kingwood Drive.

With the light wind I was able to keep a nice pace even in a headwind. The temperature was just 90 when I finished compared to the upper 90’s earlier in the week. Tomorrow it may get back up to the upper 90’s or higher. My legs felt good and the different gearing on the Lynskey may be a good thing after pedaling harder gearing the previous day. Weather conditions: start 84 (humidity 76%, dew point 76), mostly clear, wind E 5 mph; finish 91 (humidity 58%, dew point 73), mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph.

The sun took a toll on my Pink Floyd bike shorts with two large spots turning white spots from the ultraviolet exposure. I replaced them with a pair of Primal Prisma Ebony Blue Shorts. I noticed the white Armoray arm sleeves were showing wear and replaced them with a pair of black Bellwether Coldflash sun sleeves. They were surprisingly cool even though they were black.

As I was riding I thought about the gearing and wondered if the 46×33 crankset on the Lynskey might be the better choice for the HH100 in August. The route is not mountainous but it is hillier than what I am used to. Maybe I will change the crankset on my Cervelo Caledonia to 46×33. Checking the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I saw I spent 1:47:27 using the 33×13 gears today out a total moving time of 2:36:34. Plus I only made 17 RD changes. I got my overall average speed up to 14.3 mph before it got lower as I rolled into Kingwood.
