About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Want to Tell Dallas That Cycling in the City Is Unsafe? Here’s Your Chance.

By Matt Goodman | www.dmagazine.com

Dallas wants you to fill out a survey to help inform its update to the 11-year-old bike plan. Let’s talk about it.

The city of Dallas has launched a survey to help inform how it will update its 11-year-old bike plan. That survey is live through July 17.

But first, an anecdote.

I live in Oak Cliff, where the city recently reverted Polk and Tyler streets into two-way thoroughfares. The city began this process in 2016 with a goal of slowing traffic and encouraging more pedestrian activity along these streets. When they were one-ways, they were raceways in and out of the neighborhood.

There’s a new roundabout that allows drivers to access both directions of Tyler and Polk at their northern junction, a few blocks above …

Out And Back To Huffman Before It Gets Real Hot

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2022

I managed to start today’s bike ride a few minutes earlier than yesterday at 8:46 AM. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I added a couple of streets in Bear Branch Village before leaving Kingwood to be sure I rode enough miles. Finishing at 11:25 AM after biking 34.31 miles I was back home before the temperature got close to 100. At Fairlake Lane I saw two cars with bikes on the back looking like they already finished their ride. I waved at each one.

Fifteenth times I biked this route in 2022, one of my most frequent group of roads.

Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 77%, dew point 78), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph; finish 92 (humidity 60%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph.

Link to AXS.SRAM.com ride report. Rear Derailleur Shifts 19. 35×13 gearing used for 1:20:38. I thought I used the 35×15 more than the 35×13.

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) — A Deer Park driver has been charged in a case of road rage against a bicyclist that was caught on camera back in April.

"I was like, ‘Whoa!’ There was a moment there where I thought he was going to hit me," said the cyclist, who asked ABC13 not to reveal his identity when interviewed at the time.

The video featured above is from our initial report in April.

Beat The Heat Biking Spring Creek Greenway To Pundt Park

Texbiker.net Posted on July 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 11, 2022

I estimated the ride to be 40 miles and it turned out to be 42.17 miles when I finished at 12:22 PM. This was the 6th time biking to John Pundt Park in 2022 but the June 22nd ride was .05 of mile longer. The greenway was not very busy and most of the other cyclists I saw in both directions.

7-11-2022 YTD Bike Rides Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park

Starting somewhat early got me back home before it got really hot. The shade on the greenway kept the sun from being full strength and the light wind helped too. When I stopped for a short break at John Pundt Park the breeze was cooling as I sat on a picnic bench in the shade. I added some extra ice to CamelBak and it was just enough. when I emptied it after the ride a few ice cubes and almost no water was left. What the weather was like: start 82 (humidity 90%, dew point 79), partly cloudy, wind W 7 mph; finish 95 (humidity 51%, dew point 74), a few clouds, wind S 12 mph gusts 20 mph. I didn’t really notice the wind gusts while on the greenway and on the way back home after leaving the greenway I rode mostly with the wind or was sheltered in the trees along the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway.

The greenway has a 15 mph speed limit so I used the 35×15 gearing. This kept my average speed down until I was back on Hamblen Road and shifted to the 35×13 gearing and improved it to 13 mph. It’s hard to go much faster on the greenway with all of the blind turns and quick uphill sections.

Year to date miles in 2022 has surpassed 2021 but I cannot seem to get closer to 2020. Those 3 years are well in front of the other years in the graph below.
