Volunteers work through East Texas heat to maintain Whitehouse trails for hikers and cyclists

WHITEHOUSE, Texas (KLTV) – What was once a storage area for the city of Whitehouse has been rebuilt into a hiking and biking trail by locals for locals and those from out of the area.

The heat couldn’t keep volunteers away from working on projects that aimed to keep the Blackhawk Creek Trail maintained. Justin Brown is one of the trail stewards and said it’s close to three miles, for both hikers and cyclists.

“We’re doing trimming, most of the trail just needs to be trimmed. Then we’re also going back in and kind of putting some wood in certain spots where we’re going to build either small bridges, little walking paths,” Brown said. “Then we’re also building berms, if you wanna say, for the bikes to be able to get through and it’s not as off camber.”

Kingwood Trails – Tour de Pools

It was hot when I start today’s bike ride at 1:36 PM after getting home from church. With that in mind I decided to ride the Kingwood greenbelt trails to take advantage of the tree shade. Even then it was still hot with not much wind blowing and the trees slowing that down. It was a slow ride on my Lynskey Helix bike. The last time I concentrated biking on the greenbelt trails was August 1st, 2021. It was hot on that ride too. The heat was a good opportunity to remind me of the Hotter’N Hell 100 next month.

The weather while was riding the trails: start 98 (humidity 49%, dew point 76), a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph; finish 100 (humidity 41%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind NW 9 mph. The heat index was 111.

Kingwood has almost 70 miles of greenbelt trails and my 11.49 miles today left many miles for another ride. I chose trail that took me by the village pool in each village I rode through. Some pools were sparsely populated probably because of the temperature. I don’t blame them. I captured each pool in the video as I rode nearby. Some of the trails today I haven’t been on for sometime.

Today wrapped up this week’s biking. I rode each day for a total of 225.56 miles making this the 7th week in a row of 200+ miles. June biking now totals 311.33 miles, 39% of the way to my 800 mile goal. I rode the Cervelo Caledonia 4 times and the Lynskey Helix 3 days. I averaged 32.22 miles per ride.

I hadn’t been feeling good earlier in the week, and thought I was pretty much over it. Apparently not.???? #Pops ran my Padrona Rossa in to Bicycle Heaven yesterday so that #VicMaitland Wrong Greg could replace the S-Works Power saddle with an identical saddle that had titanium rails. The plan was to hit Skyline Drive today, but by the time I got there, there was no way, so I rolled on to the Shell station. I basically did my usual long loop in reverse. Very thankful to Jesse Cortinas – Blitz Racing for organizing this ride, and also to Dina & Brian Christal for waiting for me near the end. As always, I am very thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for allowing me to return to this sport that I love and for another safe ride with great friends!

Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to take back the streets.

(We USED to meet on the last Friday of every month (holiday or not, rain or shine) at 5:00pm (with wheels down at about 5:30pm) on the UT West Mall where it meets Guadalupe (between 22nd & 23rd Streets).

We will NOW meet at the pedestrian bridge that parallels Lamar and head out around 6:30pm — still the last Friday of each month, however.

Participation will vary a LOT as this is a comeback from the original Critical Mass/Critical Mass in Austin. There have been as few as two riders and as many as hundreds. "Typical" was 50 or 60. Let’s see if we …

Bicycling Atascocita – Huffman – Walden, 21 mph Wind Gusts

I surprised myself by starting today’s bike ride at 7:46 AM. I wanted to get an early start to see other cyclists along the route. I rode the usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. At the start I needed 20 miles to reach 200+ for the week and I biked 33.45 miles so I accomplished that. I saw other cyclists and some of them are in the video. There was a group of 6 to 8 passing me near the end of the ride but my GoPro camera froze so I didn’t record them. They may have been from Trek Bicycle Kingwood or Kingwood Bicycles. A minute or so later 2 more passed.

Biking this route on Saturdays I used it 13 times in 2022, 12 of the rides have been on my Cervelo. I change the order of some roads to get to FM 1960 earlier than the other route and then cross Lake Houston to improve my chances of seeing other cyclists.

With the early start the weather hadn’t warmed too much. I thought the wind would stay in the single digits but riding west back over Lake Houston it felt strong and I was using the easier 35×15 gearing. When I got home I saw there were 21 mph gusts and I changed my mind on how my legs were handling the wind. Riding east enjoyed a tailwind most of the time. I used the 35×13 gearing most of the ride according to AXS.SRAM.com at 1:15:11 compared to 56:45 for the 35×15. Below is the cadence data. Weather at the start and finish: start 81 (humidity 90%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind SW 4 mph; finish 88 (humidity 67%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind W 12 mph gusts 21 mph.
