About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

7/7/2022: 1,000 Days in a Row Bicycled, Humbly Submitted by A Dude Abikes

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

It began October 19, 2019 for no particular reason. The thousandth day was yesterday, July 6, 2022. Why I did it is still a mystery. How isn’t that hard to explain. I just kept at it every day for a few months shy of three years. That’s the next goal on the journey, should I be lucky enough to live that long. What does it all mean? I really have no clue. I just ride, man. …

Lynskey Helix In The Sun+Heat Riding To Gene Campbell Blvd.

Texbiker.net Posted on July 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 8, 2022

It seems like Friday arrived sooner than usual. I chose my “New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd” route for today’s bike ride not realizing I didn’t ride it in the month of June. I’m not sure why I skipped it but July will include at least one ride on it. Out the door a few minutes earlier than yesterday pressing the start button on the Bolt computer at 9:14 AM on my Lynskey Helix bike. This was the first time to use this bike on the route too.

Looking at the summary of the year to date rides on the route today was the longest of the by .01 of a mile at 38.19 miles. I’m at 180.6 miles for the week making Saturday’s ride the one to get me to a 200+ mile week. Three different bikes on the 5 rides. Recent road construction on Gene Campbell Blvd. added a shoulder from the middle school to the first entrance into Porters Mill.

The heat slowed me some so I stopped in Porters Mill at the pool to rest in the shade. There wasn’t much wind and when a wisp came trough it felt good. Later I stopped at the Circle K at Sorters Road to add ice to my CamelBak. Thankfully the headwind wasn’t that strong riding SE on FM 1314. Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 77%, dew point 78), a few clouds, wind S 4 mph; finish 90 (humidity 60%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. I finished at 12:19 PM as it was getting hotter.

Only 9 RD shifts during the 2:48:17 moving time. Once I shifted into the 33×13 gear I stayed there for 2:09:47 (30.6 miles).

Tell Dallas leaders what you think about the city’s bike network

By Renee Umsted | lakewood.advocatemag.com

The City of Dallas is asking for public input on the bike network.

There is an online survey where residents can answer questions about their own experience with biking, and there’s an interactive map where residents can pinpoint locations where improvements could be made.

The City hopes to have a new bicycle master plan by summer 2023, which would update the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan.

Here are the goals for the project: …

Dallas Plans (Again) to Make the City More Bike Friendly

Kate Pezzulli | www.dallasobserver.com

Late last year, Dallas City Council allocated $2 million to rebuild the city’s bicycling infrastructure, and recently they released an update to this plan and a timeline to complete it.

The new bikeway master plan is meant to be an update to the 2011 version and includes identifying and updating the core bicycle network, updating design standards for facilities and ensuring route feasibility based on traffic engineering and safety.

The planning process for the Dallas bikeway began in January this year and is set to be completed in April 2023. The April deadline is just for completing the …

Maybe My Legs Were Stronger Than I Thought. Blue Lagoon Sighted

Texbiker.net Posted on July 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 7, 2022

Before today’s bike ride began I watched the finish of the Giro d’Italia Donne and up to the final 43 km of stage 6 of the Tour de France (I watched the final 43k after the ride). I suppose I could’ve started the bike ride earlier if I had waited to watch the TdF. I ate breakfast while watching and then got ready. Thinking of which route to ride since it was Thursday I decided to go on my “Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden” ride to the south. I can check the railroad overpass construction on Timber Forest and road construction on FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores.

I saw the Balmoral Lagoon for the first time, it’s in the video. Impressive blue water.

I rode my Cervelo Caledonia and started the ride at 9:24 AM, the same as yesterday but I finished a little earlier at 12:18 PM. I took some side streets north of Upper Lake Drive for the first time to add a little more distance and finished after biking 35.38 miles. This bumped my week total to 142.41 miles and July to 228.18 miles on my way to the 800 mile goal for July. Of the 8 times I biked this route in 2022 today was the next to longest distance just missing the longer June 23rd ride.

7-7-2022 YTD Bike Rides Atascocita-Balmoral-Walden Route
7-7-2022 YTD Bike Rides Atascocita-Balmoral-Walden Route

When I started my legs didn’t feel that strong and I stayed in the 35×15 gearing most of the way to Balmoral because of a light headwind. On the ride back I shifted to 35×13 a lot changing back to the 35×15 when my legs felt heavy. I was surprised to Strava tell me this ride was harder than my usual efforts. Total moving time was 2:47:43 according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I used the 35×15 gears for 1:26:34 and the 35×13 for 57:23 which is what I expected. I pedaled 7,143 revolutions in 1:47:55 leaving about an hour of coasting. A nice down hill coast was from near the top of the railroad overpass construction with some tailwind assist.

I passed several other cyclists during the ride.
