About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Watch the Focus Bikes team explore Texas gravel

by Jilli Cluff | bikerumor.com

For some, Texas is the heart of gravel cycling. Pine forests and endless desert roads make the state uniquely good for the style. So when the Netherlands-based Ride Beyond Crew got the chance to compete in the Gravel Locos race in the rural town of Hico, they decided to make a journey out of it.

They’d spend two weeks in Texas, dedicating one week to Hico for the race, and the second week to traveling towards the Mexican border for some more adventurous rides.

This brief edit from Focus Bikes follows the crew on their last few days in the Lone Star state, as they explore Big Bend National Park and the borderlands. …

Cyclists across America now have access to simple and affordable bike insurance.

www.endurancesportswire.com

July 6, 2022 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – BikeInsure, an insurtech company specializing in bicycle coverage for cyclists in the United States, today announced that any bicycle owner across America now has access to its standardized bike insurance. BikeInsure innovated a process that allows a cyclist to obtain bike coverage with optional theft protection for a bicycle as quickly as it was to get for your smartphone, in just a few minutes, all from BikeInsure.com.

Today’s expensive bicycles require a standalone insurance coverage policy to provide you with protection. BikeInsure reimburses you for repairs to your insured bicycle and listed accessories due to accidents when riding. Coverage continues during transit of the scheduled bike and extends to a stolen bike when optional theft protection is selected.

“While cycling is safe, accidents do happen, but I never thought it would happen to me,” said Buzzy Cohn, CEO of BikeInsure. “My bike …

Back Biking To Hamilton Park Splash Pad

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

Til today, it has been quite some time since I let my bike roll me anywhere.

Today, an hour before noon, my bike began rolling me north on the Circle Trail, exiting the Circle Trail in Hamilton Park by the Splash Pad, which is what you see my bike’s handlebars pointing towards in the photo documentation.

There was some wind blowing, which made the 99 degrees feel a bit cooler. Combining the wind speed with the bike speed, the wind chill factor makes those 99 degrees feel like only …

South Austin neighbor says bike lane curb to blame for tire blowouts

"South Austin neighbor says bike lane curb to blame for tire blowouts, city says it improves safety"

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/ … es-safety/

My favorite bit from the article is this :

“You cannot chalk it up to bad driving or new experience,” he said. “One, because there are new people coming to Austin every single day, so every day, you’ve got a new driver that’s not familiar with this area, and that’s going to happen for years to come. You have to understand there is an inherent problem here.”

Dude, people hit the curb because they’re driving in the bike lane. I might have to chalk it up, at least partially, to bad driving after all.

Though I am surprised that they made the curb so abrupt — they could have angled it to do less damage to the bad drivers who hit it anyways. And do paint it bright yellow or something. …

No Cobbles Or Dust Riding Out and Back To Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on July 6, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 6, 2022

Wednesday’s bike ride headed north through Porter and New Caney before looping through Tavola. I call this my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I rolled away at 9:24 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and finished at 12:35 PM. I rode 38.33 miles and now my Cervelo has 3003 miles. This was the 8th time riding this route in 2022. I modified the route in Kingwood riding on some different streets adding about 1 mile to the typical distance. After the ride I’ll watch stage 5 of the TdF with cobbles and lots of dust.

7-6-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch

Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 73%, dew point 77), a few clouds, wind S 7 mph; finish 93 (humidity 55%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The headwind on the way back to Kingwood was challenging but not too hard. I used the 35×13 gearing mostly except when I rode up an incline on Valley Ranch Parkway from SH 99 Grand Parkway overpass.

Total moving time was 2:56:41 and I used the 35×13 combination 1:55:53 or 26.4 miles. I turned the pedals 7,363 revolutions with an active cadence time of 1:51:24.

I saw streets under construction and homes filling in the open areas in Tavola. A new development called Peppervine has one house under construction. A few casual cyclists were out too.

Firecracker Run & Bike

Firecracker Run & Ride Christoval, Texas July 2, 2022

I will not be following my usual format of commenting on photos as most are self explanatory. And yes, it has been a while since posting a ride. We did some in October 2021, but on one it started raining just as we began so the lens was wet. On others I had a hard time seeing the environment.

I complained to my eye doctor repeatedly that "I can’t see!" Short story, they discovered I have macular degenerartion in both eyes. Right is dry. Left is wet. I receive injections in my left eye every 6 weeks. Still, eye sight is terrible. …

Not My First Route Choice But A Good Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 5, 2022

Today’s route wasn’t the one I thought of first but it turned out to be a good ride (in the video I give more details). It started at 9:29 AM with some sun and mid 80’s. For a change of pace I rode my Lynskey Helix bike when I usually ride my Cervelo Caledonia on Tuesday. The route is what I call “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” but I altered it a little in Kingwood riding on some side streets. Later on Ramsey Road I went north farther than I normally do before turning around. By the time I finished at 12:37 PM I biked 39.65 miles, the most miles of the 4 times I rode this route in 2022.

7-5-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood to Ramsey Road - Huffman
7-5-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman

Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 73%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph; finish 92 (humidity 55%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The wind wasn’t too much of a challenge. I enjoyed some tailwind riding east on Old Atascocita Road and some headwind going west on FM 1960 from Huffman.

With the different gearing on the Lynskey I used the combinations differently from the Cervelo. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows a total moving time of 2:57:56. I used the 33×13 gearing the most at 1:15:09 but I also used the 33×12 52:24. I don’t have the legs to use the 12 tooth rear cassette for long on the Cervelo.

The Stravini Chrome extension reports 7733 Crank Revolutions, 01:52:30 Active Cadence Time. So I coasted more than I pedaled (2:57:56 minus 1:52:30).
