About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

HOUSTON – Cell phone footage of an incident involving a group of bicyclists and a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable is going viral on social media.

The video was recorded Thursday near the 4400 block of North Main in the Heights area.

The footage appears to show a deputy constable break-checking a bicyclist and then veering in and out of traffic behind him.

The video was posted to Facebook by one of the cyclists who said the group was outraged by the deputy’s behavior but did not say what sparked the incident.

“For cops to break check you and do that zig-zag motion that he did, I think that just doesn’t add to the …

Rained Before Sunup, Roads Dried In Time to Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 2, 2022

Today was a good solution for rain and a bike ride. Before sunrise my home weather station recorded .68″ of rain and by the time I started the bike ride at 8:17 AM the streets dried enough it was hard to tell it rained. The short ride on the greenbelt trail was wet but after that dry streets. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike on the typical Saturday route “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” in hopes of seeing other cyclists which I did once I reached the causeway over Lake Houston on FM 1960. You can see them in the video.

I needed to ride 19 miles to reach 200+ miles for the week. I biked 33.37 miles putting the week’s total at 214.7 miles with one more day to go. This was the 12th time biking this route this year. All but one has been on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. The average speed today was below the typical average speed.

7-2-2022 YTD Bike Rides Overview Atascocita-Huffman-Walden

With the rain the humidity at the start was 99% making it muggy. That did go down by the time I finished at 10:56 AM but my bike cloths were soaked from sweat. The headwind was the worst riding west over Lake Houston with nothing to get in its way. My legs worked hard but my speed dropped to 11 mph sometimes on the causeway. The cyclist who was in front of me pulled away as we crossed the lake. I didn’t realize until I got home and looked at the weather that wind gusts were 18 mph, probably explaining why my legs had a hard time over the lake. Weather overview: start 79 (humidity 99%, dew point 78), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; finish 89 (humidity 64%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 gusts 18 mph. At FM 1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive the road construction was a big mud pit. Glad I didn’t need to ride through it.

According to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report the total moving time was 2:34:26. Of that time I used the 35×13 gears 1:40:40 or 23.1 miles. I shifted the RD 19 times. Maybe I should’ve changed to the 35×15 gears crossing the lake going west into the headwind.

The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) has announced the 2022 winners of the Bicycle Retailer Excellence Awards (BREA). 111 retailers from North America have been awarded this recognition in levels of Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Video: WebXtra: East Texas mission team plans to take bicycle trip through Andes mountains

By Bob Hallmark | www.kltv.com

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Summer is peak travel time, and East Texans are taking trips at home and abroad, but one East Texas group is taking an extreme trip, to cycle the Andes in south America, but with a purpose.

The ‘Stitchin Heaven’ volunteers on their way to a ministry in remote villages of Peru, to ride bicycles 300 miles over the Andes mountains, with a mission.

“Dr. Larry Garman, 85 years old has served as a missionary down in the Peruvian jungle for about 50 years. There’s just no running water there. Interesting there is solar but no electricity,” says team member Rob Appell.

They’ll ride from the Peruvian coast, over the Andes mountains into the jungle to serve the ‘Aguaruna’ tribes.

“Chiclayo Peru to the mission station in Nuevo Horizonte in the Amazon,” Rob says.

They’ll deliver clothing and sewing items and …

From Doubtful To On The Lynskey Helix Outside

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2022

When I woke up this morning it didn’t look like a bike ride day but by mid morning it looked better. While I waited I watched stage 1 of the Tour de France and stage of the Giro d’Italia Donne. My home weather station recorded 1.58″ of rain that ended around 10:30. Just in case I check Zwift for upcoming events but didn’t sign up for any. By 12:16 PM the streets dried enough to begin biking. I chose my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route going north away from the remaining spots of rain. For the second time this week I rode my Lynskey Helix bike.

Today marked the 6th ride on the route in 2022 split among 3 different bikes. I rode 32.39 miles to get July off to a good start towards my 800 mile goal for the month. For the week I am up to 181.32 miles. If the weather cooperates on Saturday I should reach 200+ for the week.

7-1-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood Route

It was very humid with 99% at the start and 94% when I finished at 2:47 PM. The temperature maxed out at 78 at the end of the ride. When I went inside after finishing my bike cloths felt like I went swimming, dripping moisture. The dew point stayed close to the temperature too adding to the wet feeling. Weather overview: start 75 (humidity 99%, dew point 74), cloudy, wind NE 7 mph; finish 78 (humidity 94%, dew point 76), overcast, wind E 5 mph. It should return to hot by Sunday.

Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. A modest 17 RD shifts and 1:41:57 riding time in the 33×13 gear combination.

This chart compares the YTD miles for the years 2010 to 2022. I can’t seem to get 2022 miles above 2021 and 2020 but I’m trying.
