About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

5 events happening in Galveston this summer you probably didn’t know about

www.click2houston.com

Any Houstonian will tell you that vacationing in Galveston is like going to a home away from home – the weather is always great, the fresh seafood is to die for and there is so much to do.

There is so much to do, in fact, that there are probably things happening in Galveston that you probably didn’t even know about.

Yes, there are the staples of Galveston Island that everyone knows about, but we’re here to tell you about some of the lesser known events going on in Galveston that are fun for the entire family.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your sunglasses, bathing suit and sunscreen and head on down to Galveston for a summer you’ll never forget. …

Video: Ride and Splash teaches kids about riding bikes

By KAUZ Digital Media Team | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Bike Wichita Falls hosted their third annual fun bike educational event, Ride & Splash, near the Dr.’s Park Splash Pad in Hamilton Park on Saturday morning.

This free event encouraged people of all ages to bring out their wheels – bikes, scooters or skates – to practice handling, signaling and overall bike safety. In addition to the closed course, there were refreshments, helmet fittings, giveaways, bike adjustments and goody bags for the first 50 people to arrive.

“It’s really just an opportunity for people to come out and enjoy riding your bike in a fun place” Becky Raeke, Bike Wichita Falls co-chair, said. “It’s not just about riding bikes but enjoying the facilities that we have here in Wichita Falls, like the splash pad. Just kind of a fun day for families to come out and practice riding their bike.”

Prizes and free items to give away were available to all participants who rode their bike to this event.

Confirmed My Suspicions

Texbiker.net Posted on June 28, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 28, 2022

I tweaked today’s bike route a little adding some side streets and taking a side trip on Farmingham Road to check out a store. That made the ride about 3 miles longer than usual. The bike ride began at 8:57 AM and finished at 11:43 AM. The route name is “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” going south and east biking 36.37 miles riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. In addition to the Farmingham Road side trip when I got to FM 2100 I rode south to Spanish Cove Drive and made a u-turn back to the north. I don’t usually do that. This ride raised my June total to 922.43 miles. So far in 2022 I biked this route 14 times and today was the most miles. Today was the earliest start time by 2 minutes.

There is a chance rain will come on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but today was sunny but mostly cloudy. The temperature didn’t get out of the 80’s by the time I finished and the humidity was low for the time of year. Weather conditions: start 80 (humidity 69%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph; finish 89 (humidity 54%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph.

The video details the side trip on Farmingham Road and the ride through the road construction on FM 1960. Both confirmed my earlier thoughts. I also recorded a Strava top result on Farmingham Road: 3rd fastest time on Home Stretch (2:18)

The Rise and Rise of Texas-Based BMX Superstar Brad Simms

By Ian Dille | www.texasmonthly.com

When early pandemic lockdowns led to empty streets, Simms, a leader among Black BMX riders, catapulted himself to social media fame.

Brad Simms is sprinting toward the jumps. The freestyle pro and I are riding the mountain bike trails in Milton Reimers Ranch Park, about 45 minutes west of Austin. Specifically, a downhill “flow trail” with a sign extolling the dangers below: WARNING! SERIOUS INJURY IS POSSIBLE. RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Simms rips around a berm, floats through a rhythm section on just his rear wheel, and playfully flicks his mountain bike up and over a shin-high limestone ledge. “You were going really fast!” I wheeze when I finally catch up to him. Simms smiles, “What’d you expect?”

A few miles later, we’re coasting down the park road toward the …

Balfour Beatty joint venture places first bridge widening beams on Texas Oak Hill Parkway project

Balfour Beatty, as part of Colorado River Constructors (CRC) joint venture team, successfully set the first bridge beams that support widening activities east of US 290 and SH 71 “Y” interchange in Austin, Texas on the $674m Oak Hill Parkway project

The 10 bridge beams were set in one night, set by cranes on bearing pads atop of previously constructed columns and caps. The next phase of the Oak Hill Parkway project will involve widening operations on Old Fredericksburg Road, which include installing permanent metal decking, forming bridge overhangs and setting rebar for future bridge decks and barriers.

The process will be repeated at Monterey Oaks Boulevard in the next few weeks. The Oak Hill Parkway project is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Weather May Change, No Dogs, Bike Ride To Tavola And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on June 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 27, 2022

The weather might change this week to a few degrees cooler and wetter. I stress the might part. It was 86 when I started today’s bike ride at 9:14 AM. I was delayed a few minutes while I changed the battery on the speed sensor on the Cervelo Caledonia. That’s one of the reasons I always wake the senors before going outside. It would be nice if the Bolt computer warned of a sensor low battery like it does the Favero power meter pedal and the SRAM eTap batteries. Sometimes I have difficulty changing the speed sensor battery because of the front wheel spokes getting in the way.

Today I rode north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. The last time I rode this route was June 17th. So far I biked this route 7 times this year. All but one has been on my Cervelo Caledonia bike.

6-27-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch

I decided to ride through the Rock Creek at Northpark Drive intersection to see if the dogs were there. They did not show themselves.

I finished the bike ride at 12:15 PM with the temperature at 95. Weather conditions: start 86 (humidity 69%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind NW 5 mph; finish 95 (humidity 48%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph. Wind was not a problem today. The strong winds from April and May are a distant memory. Now the heat is the main thing.

A chart I recently found using the Stravini Chrome extension shows my fitness trends using my Strava data for the past 6 month.
