About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

City Council Vote Could Bring Shared Scooters and Bikes Back to Dallas

www.nbcdfw.com

The Dallas City Council will vote on new rules to bring back shared scooters and possibly bikes later this year.

The conditions would limit the number of the scooters and bikes and where they can be used and stored.

"Every 90 days, staff will look at it. And where there’s good behavior, we allow more units," Dallas City Council Member Omar Narvaez said.

The proposal recommends not allowing rides in public parks, public plazas, the grounds of the State Fair of Texas or on sidewalks. Riding late at …

It’s Going To Get Hot Hot Hot! Avoiding RR Crossing Closure

Texbiker.net Posted on June 20, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 20, 2022

This is going to be hot week with temperatures of 100 degrees and more; very unusual for June in the Houston area. I will plan on starting my bike rides a little earlier to finish before noon. As I got ready to go biking two trucks pulled up in front of my house. Last week a man marked the underground location of utilities and the crews today started laying fiber optic cable conduit for AT&T. This year my neighborhood went from two weak internet service providers plus 2 new good ones. A big change.

After getting ready, filling the CamelBak with ice and water the bike ride got underway at 8:59 AM. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike but not to the north like I usually do on Mondays. Tomorrow the railroad crossing on Old Atascocita Road will be closed from 8 AM to late in the day so I decided to ride my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route today to avoid the closure. The railroad crossing should be open Wednesday. I finished the bike ride at 11:31 AM before the day got close to the max heat.

Weather conditions: start 85 (humidity 70%, dew point 74), a few clouds, wind N 0 mph; finish 93 (humidity 51%, dew point 72), a few clouds, wind E 4 mph. A month or two ago I complained about the strong wind and now the wind has almost disappeared.

Today’s route seems to be the one I ride the most according to SportTracks. I biked 34.12 miles cutting the miles I need to reach my 800 mile goal for June to 149 miles. Of the 13 rides on this route in 2022 today is one of the better ones based on average speed, average power, and average pace.

College Station City Council approves VeoRide use in city and on A&M campus

Bailey Brown | theeagle.com

The City of College Station officially allows the use of electric scooters, also known as electric micro-mobility devices, for residents in College Station and on the Texas A&M University campus, after the city council voted unanimously to expand its shared micro-mobility ordinance.

Previously the ordinance was known as a Dockless Bike Share Program, however during a previous meeting the council issued guidelines for the newly named micro-mobility ordinance.

The ordinance allows the bike-share vendor, VeoRide Cosmo, to place electric sit-down scooters on the A&M campus and in …

But Amar, I thought it was too hot to ride bikes in Houston?!?

I saw a family with a parent and two kids on a RadWagon. I've eBike commuted about 10 times over the last 3 weeks and riding an eBike means I don't arrive sweaty at all.

Oxbow Lakes Along The San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on June 19, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 19, 2022

Nothing like biking in hot weather. As I rode I thought this ride is training for the HH 100 in August. Getting home from church I got ready and rode out at 1:33 PM on my Lynskey Helix bike. I didn’t plan on riding much more than 15 miles due to the late start and 96 degree temperature. I filled the CamelBak with ice and water to carry while I rode the Kingwood streets and greenbelt trails. The trails offered some shade from the broiling sun and light wind. At the 2:57 PM finish I rode 15.87 miles in 1:16:38 ending the week at 216.17 miles. Not the most miles in a week but I felt good about ti considering I didn’t ride on Monday. The Lynskey Helix is up to 224 miles now.

This was the 4th week in a row of 200+ miles. The average ride this week was 36.03 miles. Average riding time was 2 hours 40 minutes. While I road on some of the same streets I did not duplicate any routes this week.

One other cyclist was out passing me on Woodland Hills Drive. He is in the video. I noticed his 2 white water bottles hanging behind his saddle and wondered if they were filled for some reason. When I finished my ride the CamelBak still had a lot of ice left.

I stopped at 2 spots on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway with historical plaques newly added. One told about Oxbow lakes and the other about the construction of the Lake Houston Dam in the early 1950’s.

Weather conditions: start 96 (humidity 43%, dew point 69), a few clouds, wind variable 4 mph; finish 97 (humidity 40%, dew point 68), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph. I felt the temperature difference when I rode through the shade.

According to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I made 8 RD gear changes riding 1:07:18 in the 33×13 gears. I’m still working on the gear combinations to use.

Strava top result: 3rd fastest time on Greenway Appendix (52s).
