About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mother Land / Justice League Juneteenth Ride then See Jack pull and pull and pull and pull and pull

Frank Cano | strava.com

Went to ride into the MCC/JLC Juneteenth ride and Mark suggested we stop by the Freedom Tree in Lake Olympia. OMG!!!! Been living in this area for 25 years and didn’t know this was here! This is the tree under which in 1865 the slaves of the Palmer Plantation were notified that they were free people. Wow!

What an amazing and large group of cyclists we had this morning! Every single rider was very strong including Jesse Cortinas – Blitz Racing who thankfully put this ride together.???? I left from The Snakedoctor’s “Den” Jeff Skokan, who has been over the top supportive of me since I was hit by a car some 9 years ago. He also gets stronger and faster with nearly every ride! Of course most of all I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for allowing me to return to this sport that I love, and for another safe ride with great friends!????

Very Humid, Light Wind, Cyclists Sighted, 200 Mile Week Barely

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2022

Hoping to see other cyclists during today’s bike ride I got out the door and rolling at 7:55 AM. Before the ride I needed 35 miles to reach 200 for the week. I chose my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” which usually is not that many miles. Riding my Cervelo Caledonia I added a few extra side streets and by the 10:31 AM I finished with 34.9 miles, enough to put the week at 200.3 miles. Not biking on Monday put me behind but three 40+ mile days got me close. June totals 601.42 miles leaving 199 to reach my 800 mile goal. I plan on biking tomorrow to increase the week’s total miles.

6-18-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita-Huffman-Walden
6-18-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita-Huffman-Walden

10 times I rode this route in 2022. Today was the longest distance by almost a mile. All but one of the rides has been on my Cervelo bike. The average speed, heart rate, and average power of the 10 rides is close as is the pace.

I saw quite a few other cyclists starting on Kings River Drive with most of them on Fairlake Lane and Old Atascocita Road. I caught many of them in the video. Surprisingly the GoPro did not freeze a single time during the ride.

By riding early in the day I again avoided the hottest weather but not the most humid part of the day. When I finished my gloves were soaked with sweat, my Texbiker jersey was dripping and my shorts felt like i just got out of the pool. Emptying the CamelBak back home a few ice cubes were left meaning I had cool water for the whole ride. Weather conditions: start 78 (humidity 94%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 86 (humidity 70%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph. Not much wind to contend with during the bike ride.

Checking the AXS.SRAM.com ride report the data shows a total moving time of 2:32:55 with a total time of 2:36:33. I pedaled the 35×13 gears the most with 1:38:05 riding 23.3 miles. I shifted the RD only 19 times. I think the flat route and light wind allowed me to stay in the 35×13 gears more.

Strava told me I am the Local Legend on Kings Crossing North for the last 90 days with 38 rides on this segment. I’m not the fastest on this segment which has 2 stop sign intersections. The fastest person is Craig Prejean at 53 seconds compared to my 1:58.

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – An 80-year-old Abilene man is planning to ride 80 miles on his bike to raise money for Meals on Wheels. This man, named Bo Green, rides his bike for exercise since he is no longer able to run.

He began riding in 2019, often challenging himself to ride long distances. Now, he is challenging himself to help Meals on Wheels by using his bike.

“I finally decided that since I was about to turn 80 that I would try for 80 miles,” says Green.

He is waking up at 3:00 am to beat the heat and ride 80 miles on June 25th. This is a distance he has …

Ride Vibes: The Best Trail Signs

By: Jali Fernando | www.imba.com

A roundup of the best trail signs submitted by the MTB community Trail signs are an important, place-based tool to communicate with everyone who’s getting outside. Signs are often at trailheads and sometimes along the route. Usually there’s a map of where you’re going—snap a picture if you don’t have a paper map or map app with you! There are usually place-based rules to know regarding dogs, wildlife and how to yield to other users—go to the same trail a few times and you’ll have these memorized soon. Sometimes, there’s a chuckle, a smirk, a double-take or a sign that makes you scratch your helmet. …

They say everything is bigger in Texas. It seems so are the horses and the damage they can do to cyclists who do not yield.

Work is about 95 percent complete on a mile-long stretch of Walnut Bend, and with it the hope that planting trees, widening sidewalks, and making the street less about cars can be the seeds of change for many parts of the area. https://t.co/ZV4x883FRf

Early Enough To Avoid Hot Part Of The Day

Texbiker.net Posted on June 17, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 17, 2022

Summer weather moderated a little this morning as I started the bike ride at 8:39 AM. It felt a little cooler and I got about a 1/10″ of rain yesterday evening which I hoped helped my yard plants. I decided to not try to ride a fourth 40+ day and chose my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I estimated the ride would be 34 or 35 miles but i added a circle in Elm Grove Village early in the ride and ended up at 37.35 miles. I rode this route 6 times in 2022 so far. I didn’t realize this route distance was not out of the ordinary. It has been over a month since I last biked this route. I thought it was not that long ago. There were some changes in Tavola on Aragoste Parkway as workers added some streets to the east for more homes. On the west side of US59 south of Roman Forest Blvd. earth moving equipment was clearing land after a long time of no activity.

With today’s miles the week totals 165.38 which puts a 200+ mile in reach with 2 more riding days left. I need 233.5 miles to reach my 800 mile goal for June.

I decided to wear a new jersey today after breaking in 2 pairs of new gloves on previous bike rides this week. I retired a jersey to keep my clothes inventory in check.

Not sure what the dog status was at Rock Creek and Northpark I avoided there. Maybe another ride I will go there when I am riding north on the opposite side of the street where the dogs hang out.

Starting at 8:39 and finishing at 11:41 allowed me to avoid the hottest part of the day. Weather conditions: start 83 (humidity 82%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 88 (humidity 58%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph. Wind was not much of an issue today.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the total moving time was 2:46:30 and I spent 1:56:49 pedaling the 35×13 gears. That was 27.7 miles in those gears with 25 RD shifts spread over the ride.
