About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Flower Mound hosting public hearings for Trails and Bikeways Master Plan.

By Mark Smith | www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Over the next month or so, the town of Flower Mound is hosting three public hearings about its Trails and Bikeways Master Plan, the first of which will be held Tuesday evening.

The town has been collecting public feedback as it works to update the Trails and Bikeways Master Plan, which will serve as a roadmap for the future improvement and expansion to trails and bikeways within Flower Mound, according to the town. It will give the town a plan for how existing and new neighborhoods are connected to key destinations such as schools, parks, shopping areas and major employment centers, and will …

11th Street will be slimmed after Turner says concerns will not derail plan for one lane

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Plans to narrow 11th Street in the Heights, which have divided residents wider than the four-lane road some are trying to maintain, will proceed, Mayor Sylvester Turner said Tuesday.

“This change isn’t easy and won’t satisfy everyone,” Turner said in a videotaped message released by his office. “We are trading off speed for safety.”

Under the proposed design, a 1.5-mile straight stretch of 11th from Shepherd east to Michaux would be reduced from two lanes to one in each direction, and turns would be restricted to certain streets through the installation of a concrete median.

Factoring for the 30-day pause Turner put on the project to make his decision, …

Early Start Before It Got Hot, Sahara Dust Haze Spoils The Sky

Texbiker.net Posted on June 14, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 14, 2022

I didn’t get to bike yesterday so today’s bike ride needed to make up some of the missed miles if I’m going to reach 200+ miles for the week. With the hot weather I didn’t wait too late to start the bike ride so I did not watch the Tour de Suisse (2.UWT) before the ride. I rolled away at 8:46 AM on Flag Day riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. It was already 83 degrees with mostly cloudy sky with haze from the Saharan dust. Thankfully the wind was only 8 mph from the south. The forecast called for upper 90’s as the high after 99 yesterday. No rain in sight. Another reason to start early was to finish before it got really hot and I finished at 12:03 PM.

When I started I planned on biking to Ramsey Road and back but I changed to my “Kingwood to Peters Road – Kingwood” route to add more distance. While the roads on this route are not new this was only the 2nd time biking the route according to SportTracks. The other ride was May 5th, 2021. Today’s 42.36 miles was more than May 5’s 41.06 miles. That ride I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. As a side note, I sold the Lynskey R300 and now my fleet is back to 3 bikes.

I wasn’t the only cyclist out today. I caught other cyclists in the video or commented on them when I missed recording them.

No big changes in the FM 1960 construction at Atascocita Shores Drive.

Weather conditions: start 83 (humidity 82%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy with haze, wind S 8 mph; finish 92 (humidity 53%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. When I got home and emptied out my CamelBak the ice had melted but the water was still cool.

On the way back I stopped at the Kings River pool area for a few minutes to rest a few minutes and took this photo.

I use the Stravini Chrome extension to expand the ride data from Strava. Below is some of the data details from the ride. The route elevation doesn’t change much but the grade details are interesting. Also I pedaled 9,695 revolutions. More ride data at AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

Video: Cyclist hopes to ride again despite pain and piling bills after hit and run

Author: Sarah Duran | www.kens5.com

SAN ANTONIO — A Crime Stoppers reward is up for grabs by anyone who can help San Antonio police arrest the driver of a white BMW involved in a hit and run crash in late April.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers responded to the scene around 3 a.m. after a passerby noticed a man lying in the road in the 6400 block of IH-35 access road on the city’s Northeast Side. The person also saw a bike on the road and called 911.

Whatever happened with the COVID bike boom?

by Rick Vosper | www.bicycleretailer.com

Anyone who’s been in this business since 2018 knows what a wild ride it’s been. In 2019 we finished the season with the lowest levels of bicycle inventory in decades, making it the first year since the Great Recession without prolonged and painful discounting of in-season models … not to mention the weakest year for U.S. bicycle imports since 1982. (Note these figures do not include burgeoning sales of e-bikes, which are counted under different import codes.)

When the first wave of COVID hit in March of 2020. Suppliers scrambled to cancel orders from factories in anticipation of fewer riders during "shelter in place" programs. But soon enough, retailers noticed the opposite effect: customers — many of whom hadn’t set foot in a bike shop in years — were discovering that cycling could be a fun and healthy alternative to public transportation, or just a great way to get outdoors without involving large groups of people. Instead of tanking, demand for bikes was soaring … but there was precious little inventory on …

North Texans Can Vote on New Trail Name

fwtx.com

North Texans can choose between two names for the 60-mile-plus trail connecting five cities.

North Texans will choose between two names for the long-planned bicycle-pedestrian trail running through the heart of Dallas-Fort Worth: DFW Discovery Trail and DFW Trinity Trail.

One of those sounds very familiar.

Participants can vote and share their opinions on the names and associated branding at www.FortWorthToDallasTrail.com. An interactive map also allows input on participants’ favorite trail destinations that might be on wayfinding signage.

Voting continues until June 20.

The 60-mile-plus trail will connect downtown Fort Worth, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Irving, and downtown Dallas. The five cities have been partners with the North Central Texas Council of Governments to fund, design, and construct various trail segments for almost a decade. The final …

Houston’s bike lanes are getting dirty—and dangerous. The city might finally be doing something about it.

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

It’s currently up to volunteers and 311 callers to make sure Houston’s bike lanes get swept.

Building out Houston’s soon-to-be sprawling network of protected bike lanes has been a priority for city leaders since the city’s bike plan was adopted back in 2017. Keeping them clean, however, is a different story.

Debris kicked to the side of Houston’s major roads, including broken glass from car crashes, is routinely swept up by several full-sized street sweepers contracted by the city—and filth in the bike lanes that aren’t protected, like those along Weslayan Street in Upper Kirby, is typically swept up in these machines. However, when that same debris winds up along Houston’s 29 miles of protected bike lanes—equipped with raised curbs where a …

PeopleForBikes’ Final Mile Is a Playbook for Accelerating U.S. Bike Networks

www.bicycleretailer.com

BOULDER, COLO. — Can U.S. cities move faster, more efficiently and more equitably to build better mobility networks for residents nationwide? The answer is yes, proven by the work of PeopleForBikes, a national bicycling advocacy organization, following two years of partnership and action in five American cities.

In 2018, PeopleForBikes set out to create a model for U.S. cities to systematically increase bicycle mobility. The Final Mile, a collaboration between Wend Collective and PeopleForBikes, was successful in achieving that goal. The strategy includes tapping into existing community support for biking, amplifying that support with paid communications and thoughtful neighborhood-based engagement and empowering elected leaders with the political will to accelerate the construction of local bike networks.

Five cities — Austin, TX; Denver, CO; New Orleans, LA; Providence, RI; and Pittsburgh, PA —took part in the Final Mile, which provided cities with the necessary financial resources and expertise to execute broad marketing campaigns, create diverse coalitions of community partners and …

Hundreds gather in East Austin for annual Black History Bike Ride

By Amanda Ruiz | www.fox7austin.com

AUSTIN, Texas – One week before Juneteenth, hundreds of people on their bikes gathered in East Austin on Sunday morning to celebrate the federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans a little early.

"In my opinion, why not celebrate Juneteenth the weekend before?," said Talib Abdullahi, founder of the Black History Bike Ride.

This was the third annual Black History Bike Ride, an 8.46 historical bike tour of Black Central East Austin.

"We’re going to basically focus on doing a deep dive and understanding some different historical facts relating to black history," said Abdullahi.

The idea for this bike ride came to fruition two years ago by Abdullahi after …
