About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Ride In June’s Heat, 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on June 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 12, 2022

It was a hot time to start today’s bike ride after coming home from church. I decided to ride my Lynskey Helix bike on the “Kingwood Streets” due to a time constraint and the heat. I filled the CamelBak with ice and water and set off at 1:20 PM. The temperature was 94 with wind from the south at 10 mph and 20 mph gusts. When I finished at 2:48 PM the temperature hit 97 and the wind was from the south at 9 mph and 17 mph gusts. The problem is Kingwood has lots of trees so the wind is not consistent though I don’t think it was helping keep me cool. It reminded me of the convection oven effect. This was the 10th time biking Kingwood streets this year but the routes are not all the same. I ride freelance, I guess.

Today I rode 18.22 miles ending the week at 241.1 miles. The rides this week covered a wide variety of routes from the Spring Creek Greenway to Galveston Island. This is the 3rd week in a row over 200 miles. I passed the halfway point on the 800 mile goal for June with 401.12 miles. Year to date I’m up to 4,161 miles still trailing 2021 and 2020. I averaged 34.44 miles per ride. I rode the Cervelo 4 times and the Lynskey 3 times. I’ve rode every day since May 23rd.

I’m getting used to the new 46×33 crankset on the Lynskey Helix bike with 2 rides on it. The gearing is not identical to the 48×35 on the Cervelo but close. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows all of the gearing activity. The Lynskey Helix now has 163 miles on it and many more to follow.

Surprising Start Time. Beat Possible 100 Degree Heat. Fellow Cyclists On Route

Texbiker.net Posted on June 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 11, 2022

I surprised myself starting today’s bike ride at 7:54 AM. I didn’t give in to watching any bike races as I ate breakfast which kept focused on getting out the door before 8 AM. My Lynskey Helix bike has the new 46×33 crankset, new FD and chain so I rode it on today’s ride. It performed great and the gearing is closer to what my Cervelo Caledonia runs. I finished the ride at 10:29 AM.

Since it’s Saturday I rode my usual “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route hoping to see some other cyclists which I did. 9 times I’ve rode this route in 2022 but this is the first time on the Lynskey Helix which is up 145 miles since I received it. Today’s ride covered 33.37 miles and now my week’s total is 222.88 making this the 3rd week in a row with 200+ miles. June biking totals 382.9 miles. My goal for June is 800 miles.

I wasn’t sure how I would ride through the FM 1960 construction at Atascocita Shores Drive. When I got there it had not changed from Thursday when I rode through the area. Turning left onto FM 1960 I stayed left of the barriers on the right shoulder. They didn’t seem to go as far from the previous lane arrangement and I moved onto the right shoulder to ride over the lake. On the way back the closed lanes to the right of the barrels and barriers was clear to the traffic light and turned left when the light changed to ride through Walden. All of this will probably change when the work begins.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report, I made 21 RD shifts during the total moving time of 2:28:47 and no FD shifts. I used the 33×13 gears for 1:38:27 (or 23.3 miles) of the ride.

Weather at the start and finish: start 82 (humidity 86%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph; finish 90 (humidity 66%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph gusts 21 mph. It might hit 100 degrees this afternoon. A good reason to get an early start.

Before reaching Walden I stopped at Waterhaven and took these photos.

Last, long stretch of Brays Bayou trail breaks ground in west Houston

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Brays Bayou snakes below the Sam Houston Tollway and Beltway 8, just south of Bellaire Boulevard, mostly out of sight of the drivers above.

By the end of 2023, so will runners, dog walkers and bicyclists, part of one of the most significant trail connections in Houston’s Bayou Greenways plan, winding through many communities clamoring for better parks and car-free travel options.

Officials on Thursday announced the start of construction on a 7.7-mile segment of trail along the bayou, from Braeburn Glen Park near Gessner and Interstate 69 to Archbishop Fiorenza Park at the Westpark Tollway and Eldridge Parkway. The $20.5 million project completes trail work along Brays and is the longest segment in the Bayou Greenways plan.

To celebrate, officials gathered at Art Storey Park, between the two end points …
