About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Galveston Island From Isla del Sol to The Pleasure Pier, Then The Work Began

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2022

I was out of bed a little before 6 AM to get ready for the drive to Galveston Island for today’s bike ride. I didn’t quite back out of the garage at 8 AM like I planned but I was only 10 or 12 minutes late. Traffic on US59 at downtown Houston slowed me down some but once I was passed that it was steady driving the Jeep to the island. Getting off I-45 at 61st. street I drove west on FM 3003 to check for road construction. Last year when I biked on July 26th (in the video I give the wrong date) there was road construction from the west end of the Seawall going west several miles. No construction today except on the far west end of the island. I turned around there and drove back to a beach access point with parking.

From there I got the Cervelo Caledonia out of the Jeep, put all of my bike gear on and set off heading to the NE. Last year I rode 35.12 miles and this time I wanted to go at least that far and maybe more. Today I rode 41.92 miles. Riding to the NE the wind was very helpful and I built my average speed up to 15.7 mph until I reached the west end of the Seawall. I slowed from there as I continued biking on the Seawall but still enjoyed the semi-tailwind. Around the 21.2 mile point it came time to make the turn back and the tailwind got ugly and became a headwind. At the start of the ride the wind was 16 mph and I don’t think it changed much when I started back to the Jeep. As I say in the video, “Now the work begins.”

The headwind was punishing dragging down my speed from 18+ mph to 12 mph or less while riding on the Seawall to the SW. Moving from the Seawall to FM 3005 the houses on my left on the other side of the road blocked some of the wind as I could tell when there was an opening without them.

With the wind and heat hydration was important and the CamelBak did it’s job. I stopped at a store in Jamaica Beach and bought a large cup of ice ($.50) to chill the remaining water. It tasted good. I should’ve filled the cup fuller. The clerk said it would be another $.50 to refill the cup but it lasted until I got back to the jeep.

Check the AXS.SRAM.com ride report for data on gearing and shifting.

When I pulled up Strava I was surprised with all of the top results. I don’t know if I ever rode and collected this many. The image shows 4 of them.

More people using bikes with record-high gas prices, but Lubbock cyclists are running into issues

by: Elizabeth Fitz | www.everythinglubbock.com

LUBBOCK, Texas- A local bike shop said on Tuesday that it’s seen an increase in customers following record-high fuel prices, but cyclists are running into problems around town.

“There’s a lot of people, particularly with the prices of gasoline, wanting to ride their [bikes] to work, class, school…” said Greg Davis, the owner of DFC Cycles and Fitness.

The only problem is… Lubbock is not bike-friendly, according to Davis, even though the city has had a pedestrian and bicycle master plan in the works for years.

The projects are slow-moving and sometimes impractical, he said.

A bike lane added on Broadway Street is hardly used, because …

Heat + Wind = Convection Bike Ride, Crankset Problem Resolved, Traffic Change Delayed?

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2022

I probably should’ve started today’s bike ride earlier than I did to avoid some of the heat but I watched the end of Women’s Tour and the final 50 km of the Critérium du Dauphiné on GCN+. Then I called Lynskey Performance to get an update on how they were going to resolve the crankset problem. Deacon at Lynskey said they would send a 46×33 crankset, chain, and front derailleur. I will take the parts to Kingwood Bicycle to replace them and send the original parts back to Lynskey. I wanted a 48×35 crankset to match my Cervelo but they don’t put that on their bikes. Maybe I change the chainrings when they wear out. Good solution.

Today’s route went south and east on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route with the Cervelo Caledonia wheels down at 10:27 AM. I finished at 1:04 PM after riding 34.2 miles. Those miles bumped June’s total to 244.63 miles, 31% of the way to my 800 mile goal for June. This marked the 12th time riding this route in 2022, probably the most rides on any one route. I noticed the sign on FM 1960 alerting of the traffic change on June 8th was turned off when I rode back across the lake. In the video you can see the lane markings are in place on the new lanes heading east. Not sure if the change is delayed. I will probably bike that direction on Thursday and see. I saw 3 other cyclists today which is unusual for Tuesday. They are in the video.

6-7-2022 YTD Bike Rides Overview Atascocita – Walden – Huffman

With the heat I used my Camelbak for water. When I finished and emptied the leftover water there were still ice cubes though small. The cold/cool water was good during the ride. At the finish I saw salt stains on my arm sleeves, shorts and gloves. Weather: start 86 (humidity 67%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph gusts 20 mph; finish 92 (humidity 53%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph gusts 21 mph.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report highlights:

  • Total moving time: 2:32:45
  • 37 RD shifts, no FD shifts
  • 1:29:48 using the 35×13, 21.8 miles
  • 41:18 using the 35×15, 8.4 miles
