About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Spring Creek Greenway On Monday

Texbiker.net Posted on June 6, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 6, 2022

Today seemed like a good day to ride the Spring Creek Greenway. The weather cooperated and I started the ride early enough at 9:16 AM to finish by 1:21 PM. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia for 50.4 miles and saw a number of other cyclists, some I recorded in the video. The last time I biked the greenway all the way to the west end was August 23rd, 2021. In between then and today I rode on the greenway but not beyond John Pundt Park. I wondered if any construction happened at the west end and found no signs on today’s bike ride. My last bike ride over 50 miles was in Key Largo, FL on May 13th, 2022.

Numerous other cyclists were on the greenway, more than I saw my last ride on May 4th. Maybe Monday is a more active day.

On the way back I rode on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway too. One of the cyclists that I saw on the Spring Creek Greenway was there too.

I don’t try to go very fast on the greenway because of other people and the many blind spot turns. I think an average speed of 13.2 mph to 14 mph is good. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the overall moving time was 3:45:55. Of that time I rode 2:58:31 (40 miles) in the 35×15 gearing. I rode 25:13 (6.2 miles) using the 35×13 gearing and most of that was when I returned to Hamblen Road on the way back. A modest 13 RD shifts and no FD shifts. This ride report shows the mileage to be 50.7.

Weather conditions: start 82 (humidity 80%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph gusts 20 mph; finish 90 (humidity 57%, dew point 73), mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 22 mph. Getting to the trailhead the headwind was strong but once on the greenway the trees and terrain blunted it some.

Strava reported 6 top results for the ride. The first 4: PR on UMC Thwy (6:06), PR on Greenway Appendix (50s), PR on Soccer/Lacrosse Road to Crystal Springs (3:12), and 3rd fastest time on 99-45 North (11:37). I didn’t expect any of these.

Southern Tier Section 5 Reroute in eastern Texas

www.adventurecycling.org

I’m reaching out to you because in the last 5 years you purchased a Southern Tier Section 5 route map or GPX data.

We have been notified about several serious safety issues along the route in eastern Texas beginning in New Waverly and heading eastward to Kountze.

As a result, we highly recommend cyclists use this: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39547493. It is 8.5 miles longer than the existing route with similar service availability.

From New Waverly, eastbound, the reroute avoids 12.8 miles of SR 150 which is busy and has no shoulders. Then from Coldspring, the reroute uses …

Searching For The Right Gearing – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 5, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 5, 2022

In June when you start a bike ride after noon expect it to be hot. Today’s bike ride was no exception. Wheels down on the ride at 1:37 PM after getting home from church. With that in mind I chose to bike the Kingwood streets and finished at 3:10 PM after riding 19.14 miles. This was the ninth time riding Kingwood streets in 2022 but the first time on my Lynskey Helix bike. The week ended with a total of 237.17 miles, the most since the week ending 5/2/2022. June miles are up to 160.2, 20% of the way to my 800 mile goal. Year to date I’ve biked 3,920 miles. While this falls behind the YTD miles for 2020 and 2021 it is more than the years 2011 to 2019. Maybe I can get closer to 2021 and 2020.

Weather conditions: start 89 (humidity 57%, dew point 72), mostly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph; finish 92 (humidity 52%, dew point 72), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. It seems the strong winds from May have softened to single digit speeds saving my legs from working so hard into headwinds.

The AXS.SRAM.com ride report gearing information is hard to compare since the crankset gearing is not the same as the Cervelo’s. With the total moving time at 1:31:02 and the gearing difference I used the front derailleur to compensate for the difference from the 48×35 on the Cervelo and the 43×30 on the Lynskey. The gears I used: 43 for 1:06:29 and the 17T rear cog for 1:01:06. It gets complicated figuring out how much time I spent in the 19T and 15T gears with the 43T front gear. I shifted around to find a ratio that felt similar to the 35×15 and 35×13 on the Cervelo. I think the 43×17 was close. I used the 30T front gear for 24:02 in the early part of the ride until I found the combination that felt good. I made 2 FD and 9 RD shifts.

East Link Trail aims to connect East Austin with downtown

Author: Hank Cavagnaro | www.kvue.com

While it’s been there unofficially for years, over the last 5-6 years, the Austin Parks Foundation has worked with the City and others to create a finished trail.

AUSTIN, Texas — For years, the Austin Parks Foundation, along with the City of Austin and the Mueller Foundation, has been working to connect the Eastside more. Recently, they just finished the 5.1-mile trail that connects Bartholomew Park up on 51st Street all the way down to Lady Bird Lake.

Hank Cavagnaro talked with Colin Wallis, CEO of the Austin Parks Foundation, about why this trail is so important.

"If you live right here, you can jump on this thing and ride it all the way up to Bartholomew Pool or all the way down to the hike-and-bike trail," he said on his bike while riding the trail.

"This is a way to connect people," asked Hank. "Right?"

"Absolutely. A safe way to get …
