About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Met My Goal For May. Different Month of Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on May 31, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 31, 2022

After a day of no bike racing to watch while I ate breakfast today GCN+ streamed the Mercan’Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes from France. It ended early enough for me to get ready and start today’s bike ride at 9:38 AM. Riding my Cervelo Caledonia I set off on my “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” for the first time this year. I did not realize this was the first time but it won’t be the last. The weather was pleasant but windy at the start by the time I finished at 12:23 PM the wind died down some. Getting to the FM 2100 turning point meant biking into a headwind most of the time. My legs were up to that today.

The distance today came in at 35.56 miles, about usual for this route. This closed out the month with 780.08 miles. Not bad considering I didn’t ride 7 days while I drove to and back from Florida. My goal was 700 miles. This increases in June to 800 miles.

5-31-2022 RWGPS May Bike Rides Summary

Weather for today’s bike ride: start 82 (humidity 78%, dew point 75), partly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph; finish 89 (humidity 65%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph.

Riding the Cervelo Caledonia the gearing returned to what I am used to. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report data is interesting. Overall riding time: 2:42:43. 27 RD shifts. 1:22:08 biking in the 35×13 gears (20.4 miles) and 58:47 using the 35×15 gears (11.1 miles). I sent an email to Lynskey asking how they can fix the crankset mistake on the Lynskey Helix bike but no response yet.

With May ending the graph below shows the year progressions since 2010 for YTD miles as of May 31st. 2022 trails 2021 and 2020 but leads the other years.

North Texas Cyclists Save Dog Trapped on Bridge During Ride

Stryker | 1063thebuzz.com

Thank goodness someone spotted this little guy. No way he would have found a way out of there without seriously hurting himself.

Not often you get a to be a hero while in the middle of an 80 mile ride, but that’s exactly what happened to the Smash Bros Plus One cycling team. Once a week they get together to ride their bikes throughout Dallas and Fort Worth. Just over a week ago, 30 miles into their 80 mile journey a woman was freaking out. …

Disappointing Discovery During Today’s Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 30, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 30, 2022

Today’s Memorial Day bike ride reminded me of when there were parades with bands and retired soldiers with lots of flags. None of that today though. The bike ride began at 9:14 AM, which is earlier than most of my bike rides. But the Giro is over so no bike races to delay biking. I rode my new Lynskey Helix bike after making a few adjustments but during the ride I discovered a major disappointment; more on that below. Wanting to add miles to May I chose my “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route heading north and looping through the small town of Roman Forest. I biked 41.57 miles according to Strava. SportTracks is a little more generous at 41.58 miles.

I wasn’t the only cyclist out with two passing me going the other direction before I got to US59 going north.

Checking the weather as I got ready the wind was going to be a challenge. Not so much getting to Roman forest but on the return back to Kingwood. With summer getting closer the temperature was in the 80’s at the start and upper 80’s when I finished at 12:51 PM. Weather conditions at the start and finish: start 82 (humidity 77%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 24 mph; finish 87 (humidity 68%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind S 17 mph gusts 25 mph. I felt the strong gusts as I biked through Valley Ranch on the way back but the legs pedaled through.

Back to the major disappointment. Yesterday I rode the Lynskey Helix for the first time. I thought the pedaling effort was easier than I expected but attributed it the excitement of the new bike. Today I noticed the same ease of pedaling in what I thought was the 35×15 and 35×13 gears. I knew the rear cassette gears were the same as my Cervelo Caledonia but I had not checked the crankset gearing. On the way back to US59 I stopped at the Shell station for ice and water. While I was there I checked the crankset and saw it wasn’t the 48×35 I ordered but the 43×30. No wonder the pedaling was easier in those two gear combinations. I sent an email to Lynskey asking how they would fix this. Below is a picture of the wrong crankset.

5-30-2022 Lynskey Helix Rival 43x30 Crankset-1
5-30-2022 Lynskey Helix Rival 43×30 Crankset-1

Today’s bike ride was the 3rd time using this route. The average distance for the 3 rides is 41.67 miles with today just slightly less. The different gearing meant the resulting speed for a given gear combination was lower than on my Cervelo. I wondered why it was hard to get my speed up to 18 or 19 mph compared to the Cervelo. The cadence would 100 but the speed was only 16 or 17 mph. This probably came in handy with the strong wind gusts though. Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

5-30-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch

Strava reported “This was harder than your usual effort” for the ride and with the headwind I agreed on the way back to Kingwood. At one point when I stopped at Valley Ranch Parkway and TX 99 the wind kept pushing me from the side making standing with my right foot on the ground difficult.
