About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Get Acquainted Bike Ride Turned Into A Triple Play

Texbiker.net Posted on May 29, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 29, 2022

A very late start for today’s bike ride. It was a special new bike day ride, a triple play ride. I finished getting my Lynskey Helix bike ready to ride last night and this was the get acquainted ride to check my work. I started the ride at 3:42 PM and finished at 5:32 PM after riding Kingwood Streets and the San Jacinta Bayou Greenway covering 21.78 miles. Those miles made it a 200 mile week and put me over my 700 mile goal for the month of May.

The Helix sports the SRAM Rival eTap AXS electronic shifting which performed flawlessly during the ride. In the video I note which things I need to adjust but only a couple. The Helix runs on ICAN Cycling Alpha 46 carbon rims with Continental GatorHardshell 700x28c tires. Maybe my new bike adrenaline was flowing heavy but pedaling the bike was almost effortless despite some strong headwind. Th AXS.SRAM.com ride report gives the details of the gearing I used along with other data.

Weather conditions: start 88 (humidity 59%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind S 15 mph gusts 22 mph; finish 87 (humidity 58%, dew point 70), partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph gusts 35 mph. Starting this late in the afternoon I thought it would be hotter but I’m not complaining. The humidity and dew point helped it feel okay which are low for Houston.

While I wasn’t trying to ride fast I set 2 personal records in Strava: PR on Soccer/Lacrosse Road to Crystal Springs (3:23), 2nd fastest time on Deer Springs to Lake Village Sprint (1:30).

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department awards $4.8 Million in Recreational Trail Grants to Texas communities

By Texas Parks and Wildlife Department | www.ntxe-news.com

Austin, Texas — During Thursday’s meeting, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved more than $4.8 million dollars in grants funding 17 motorized and non-motorized recreational trail-related projects across the state.

One million dollars of the amount allocated today came directly from state Sporting Good Sales Tax funds dedicated to the Recreational Trails Program through a rider passed by the 82nd Legislature. The rider increased the total amount of funded projects this year.

The National Recreational Trails Fund (NRTF) supports recreational trail construction, renovation and acquisition. The grants are funded from a portion of the federal gas tax generated by gasoline purchases for off-highway vehicles. Thirty percent of the total NRTF grants must be earmarked for motorized recreational trails, while another 30 percent must be spent on non-motorized trail projects. The remaining 40 percent is discretionary.

Projects awarded funding are listed in alphabetical order by county below:

The Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation in Brown County received a $188,000 grant for the Texas 4-H Center Trail System project. The project includes construction of 2.5-miles of an accessible natural surface multi-use crushed aggregate trail and renovation of existing trails with signage, benches and a restroom. …

Fellow Cyclists On The Route, Beautiful Weather, Light Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on May 28, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 28, 2022

I paused watching stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia in order to get ready for my bike ride at 70 km remaining. The temperature was in the upper 60’s while I ate breakfast and when I started getting ready to ride. At first I put on a long sleeve T-shirt under my Texbiker.net jersey but changed my mind when it had moved up to 75. I took off the T-shirt for arm sleeves and the short sleeve jersey. That settled I rolled the Cervelo Caledonia outside to begin the bike ride at 8:28 AM. Last Saturday I was driving home from Biloxi, MS but today I chose my typical Saturday route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden”. My legs felt good and the weather was beautiful. With a somewhat early start I hoped to see other cyclists along the route.

Several other cyclists passed along the route. You can most of them in the video.

The construction at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 is far enough along that I rode through it to avoid riding on FM 1960 beside the barrier.

Today’s ride was the 7th time in 2022 on this route, all on my Cervelo bike. Today’s 34.05 miles was the longest of the 7. So far I’ve rode 188.14 miles this week and 681.14 miles in May. I need 19 miles to reach my 700 mile goal for May.

5-28-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita - Huffman - Walden
5-28-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita – Huffman – Walden

Weather conditions for today’s bike ride: start 76 (humidity 65%, dew point 63), fair, wind SE 4 mph; finish 86 (humidity 62%, dew point 71), a few clouds, wind S 6 mph.

From the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I found I spent a lot of time in the 35×13 gearing thanks to the light wind. Total moving time was 2:27:09. The time in 35×13 was 1:26:55 (21.7 miles). Only 38:28 using the 35×15 gears. 35 RD shifts during the ride.

I’m looking forward to the first ride on my new Lynskey Helix bike tomorrow. I need to install the chain and it is ready.

The graph below shows the year progressions since 2010. 2022 is getting closer to 2021 and 2020.

Pivotal Heights-area bridge long closed reopens to walkers and bikers

By Steven Devadanam | houston.culturemap.com

A vital and long-unused bridge in a buzzing Houston neighborhood is set to reopen.

The M-K-T Bridge, located in The Heights near White Oak Bayou, will be accessible to users on Friday, May 27, the Houston Parks Board announced. A key artery for walkers and joggers, the bridge spans over the bayou at I-10 near Studemont Street. Out of use since it was significantly damaged by a fire in August 2020, the bridge reopens after repairs began in March.

This reopening is actually ahead of schedule, as the bridge was set to open this summer, as CultureMap previously reported. It provides a pivotal outlet for those who use the M-K-T Trail, which connects The Heights to Sawyer Yards and the Washington Avenue Corridor area.

To celebrate the reopening, a …

I-35 Capital Express South Project is Approved for Construction

www.txdot.gov

The Texas Transportation Commission has approved a $547.6 million contract to build the I-35 Capital Express South project. The project will add two high-occupancy-vehicle lanes in each direction along I-35 from SH 71/Ben White Boulevard to SH 45 Southeast. In addition to the new capacity, the project will also construct intersection bypass lanes and improve pedestrian and bicycle paths. Fluor Corporation was awarded the construction contract.

The Commission also approved a $3.5 million contract to extend the pedestrian barrier along I-35. The barrier is designed to deter pedestrians from trying to cross the interstate and instead use crosswalks for pedestrian access. Once complete, the pedestrian barrier will extend along 25 miles of I-35 from SH 45 Southeast to Greenlawn Boulevard in Round Rock. …

Reopening of M-K-T Bridge celebrated as crucial recreational, mobility win

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Two blocks north of White Oak Bayou, Billy Pyle, 26, was still smiling about his first trip across the M-K-T Trail bike bridge.

“Hello, old friend,” Pyle said between catching his breath at mile 16 of his Friday morning ride.

The bridge, spanning White Oak Bayou near where the Heights Hike and Bike Trail and M-K-T Trail converge, reopened Friday — 646 days after a fire closed the critical trail link.

“It’s been two years, but it feels good to be out here, Mayor Sylvester Turner said during a late-morning celebration.

Riders and runners, however, did not …
