About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dogs Waited For My Florida Return

Texbiker.net Posted on May 23, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 24, 2022

Today was the first bike ride since my return from Florida. The Giro d’Italia rest day and a pending FedEx delivery caused me to start the bike ride at 8:44 AM and finish at 10:39 AM. I rode my “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route for 26.47 miles on the Cervelo Caledonia bike. My month road bike miles now total 519.48 leaving 180.5 miles to reach my 700 mile goal for May. It was good to ride on familiar streets again.

This was the second time to ride this route in 2022. The previous time was January 5th. Near the end of the ride another cyclist was behind me until I turned onto Brookdale Drive in Kingwood. The brown and white dog along with the brown dog were at the Rock Creek and Northpark corner. They came out from behind the rock wall when I rode on the greenbelt on the other side of the street with brown and white dog barking and moving back and forth but not crossing the street. The other dog sat there. When I rode from the greenbelt onto Northpark Drive going west the brown and white dog ran behind the rock wall emerging behind me barking and chasing me. Fortunately I was ahead of that spot and he didn’t chase me very far.

Yesterday’s rain ushered in cooler weather today with high humidity and low wind, a change from what is was before I left for Florida. Weather conditions today: start 69 (humidity 90%, dew point 66), overcast, wind variable 7 mph; finish 70 (humidity 88%, dew point 66), overcast, wind NE 5 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve T-shirt and a short sleeve jersey. I noticed my red gloves are starting to fade to pink from the sun.

Link to AXS.SRAM.com activity report.

Yesterday I started putting the ICAN Cycling wheels together for the new Lynskey Helix bike that will arrive soon. After mounting the GatorHardshell 700x28c tire on the front wheel with lots of grunting and pushing I moved to the rear wheel. That’s when I noticed the lettering on the wheels said “alpha 46” not “alpha 50” like I ordered and the box label showed. I also found out I ordered the wrong brake discs. I need centerlock but ordered the 6 screw discs. I will return the wrong ones and ordered the correct ones. Centerlock lockrings are hard to find and don’t come with the discs. ICAN Cycling offered me a $20 discount to keep the “alpha 46 ” wheels which I will do.

Carry the Load treks through San Angelo for vets and first responders

FOX West Texas staff | www.myfoxzone.com

Members from Carry the Load walked and biked through San Angelo Saturday, as part of a cross-country, five-route trek across the 48 continental states to raise awareness for the sacrifices made by military, veterans, first responders and their families.

“The West route, which we’re on right now, we’re going from Seattle over to Dallas,” crew medic Andrea Coles said while at a local stop in San Angelo. “It will be 20,000 miles total over all five routes, and we’ll all end in Dallas and cover all 48 continental states.”

Carry the Load was founded in 2011 by Clint Bruce and Stephen Holley, two veteran Navy SEALs, as a mission to “restore the true meaning of Memorial Day,” according to its website, beginning with …

Ashley Hunter: Making a road trip to the artisan market

Ashley Hunter | www.victoriaadvocate.com

Bike riding is big in our house. We just recently bought a used baby carriage that attaches to the end of my bike, and the boys both leveled up in size.

Having many children means the younger one triumphantly obtains the bike of the older, as if it is a right of passage into the next level of childhood. Not only that, but it means we can go farther much easier and faster.

Because we live somewhat near UHV, farther and faster means something really cool, like a beach volleyball court, or Chick-fil-A. On one occasion, it meant not just something cool, but original, unique, and artisan. …

By Tom Zizka | www.fox26houston.com

The findings come from car insurance company, Jerry, which looked at Census and National Highway Transportation Safety data to show Houston had the fourth-highest rate of fatal cycling crashes, over the last decade.

Joel Umanzor | www.houstonchronicle.com

Cesar Avila sits on his art bike during Houston’s first Art Bike Festival in MacGregor Park Saturday, May 21, 2022, in Houston, Texas.

As bicycles with colorful decorations and creative designs lined the trail Saturday morning at MacGregor Park, Timothy Chatman was sorry he came without his own set of wheels.

Chatman — who brought his 4-year-old daughter with him to see what was happening at the southeast Houston park — is a self-professed bicycle enthusiast and heard at the last minute from friends about the first annual Art Bike Festival taking place.

“I want to participate more,” he said. “Next year, definitely, I am going to have my own art bike with my daughter, she’s of riding age now.”

The event — which drew students from 89 schools as well as riders of …

A Tale of Two Biking Cities

By: Jack Foersterling | www.peopleforbikes.org

Austin, Texas, and Paris, France, both made big commitments to prioritize bicycling. But how do the cities’ efforts compare?

When people talk about great bicycling cities, places like Copenhagen and Amsterdam usually lead the conversation, perhaps followed by Portland or San Francisco if you’re focused on biking in the U.S. While these lofty reputations are thanks to a myriad of work done by each of these cities over many years, one underlying similarity links many of the world’s best places to ride a bike: a dedicated, concerted investment in infrastructure that gets people where they need to go, safely and conveniently, without needing to get behind the wheel of a car.

Two cities — Austin, Texas, and Paris, France — both recently made such commitments to prioritize bicycling — connecting …
