About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

San Antonio cyclists honor fallen riders with Ride of Silence

www.mysanantonio.com

As of May, three cyclists deaths have been reported in the San Antonio area

San Antonio cyclists joined in a silent ride through the streets of downtown on Wednesday, May 18, for the annual Ride of Silence, a global cycling protest that honors those killed on the road. Ride of Silence, a nationwide ride, occurs every year on the third Wednesday of National Bike Month (May).

Jeff Moore, an avid cycler, who helms a weekly city-wide ride, has organized San Antonio’s Ride of Silence for the past seven years wants to call attention to the city’s cycling problem. As of June, three cyclists have been killed by drivers on San Antonio roads.

"I think we’re in a time where it seems like the most dangerous time to …

Editorial: Harris County is right to use toll road money for trails that link communities

The Editorial Board | www.houstonchronicle.com

For decades, the Harris County Toll Road Authority has been building bigger and better highways for drivers to move through and around the county’s neighborhoods. Now, in a welcome if long overdue shift, the county-owned authority has won approval to spend millions to help people who live in those areas move around the toll roads, and elsewhere, without ever turning on their ignition.

Harris County commissioners voted 3-2 along partisan lines to OK $53 million for the first phase of a roughly $600 million plan to build hike-and-bike trails near four key toll roads.

“The toll road for a long time has been focused on finishing its system,” …

The Ride of Silence In Abilene Brings Attention To “Share The Road”

Rudy Fernandez | 1470kyyw.com

When I first heard the term "Ride of Silence" I didn’t really know what it was. However, the second time I was confronted with the term "Ride of Silence" was when an acquaintance named Jill Christie with the Texas Department of Transportation was explaining to me what the ride was all about.

So as the ride comes to Abilene, I thought it would be a great idea to share what the ride is all about. So here goes, in 2003 the first Ride of Silence took place in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex after a nationally known amateur cyclist named Larry Schwartz had been killed when he was riding his bicycle and was hit by a school bus on a wide-open empty road.

On the first Ride of Silence around the …

Palm Springs cyclist killed on cross-country ride honored at ‘Ride of Silence’

By Jake Ingrassia | kesq.com

It is National Bike Month and local cyclists are taking to the streets in Palm Springs for a memorial ride in honor of cyclists who were killed or injured in collisions with cars.

The Ride of Silence begins at 6:30 p.m. at the south entrance of Ruth Hardy Park in Palm Springs with a group of speakers including local city leaders and biking activists.

Organizers of the event said since 2010, 35 people lost their lives to cars on local streets while riding their bikes in the valley.

Last month, Palm Springs residents Lauri Aylaian and Keith Culver were hit by a car in Austin, Texas, while on a cross-country bicycle ride from San Diego to Florida. Aylaian is still recovering from a leg injury; Culver died the next day from his injuries.

"We made it as far as Austin, Texas," Aylaian said. "We were a …

After Trinity Trails robbery attempt, paraplegic bicyclist returns to Ironman preparation

By Emerson Clarridge | www.star-telegram.com

From his near-flat position close to the ground, Trent Fielder’s first effort to halt the robbery attempt that was underway used a bit of humor.

Fielder, who is 48 and paraplegic, was on a bicycle on the Trinity Trails System in Fort Worth. About four hours after he began a ride to train for an Ironman, his assailant approached.

The attempted robbery occurred about 2 p.m. on March 31 and on what was Fielder’s first time on the trail. He lives in Joshua.

Throughout their encounter, the …

Port Arthur could be next local city to get electric scooters, bikes

By Monique Batson | www.panews.com

A California-based company formed to provide cities with environmentally friendly transportation is hoping to bring their electric vehicles to Port Arthur.

Mike Butler with Bird Rides recently pitched city leaders an offer to launch a pilot program similar to that adopted in Beaumont in March.

“Before we get into kind of what we do, I think it’s far, far more important to understand why we run our business, why we started this business and why we do what we do,” Butler said. “And it really is to improve our …

San Antonio cyclists to honor loved ones in Ride of Silence at Travis Park

Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

Jeff Moore, an organizer for SATX Social Ride, knows the streets of San Antonio well. He’s cycled all over the city for the past 30 years. However, he feels most local drivers became more careless once the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns were lifted.

"I think we could do a lot more PSAs (public service announcements) because it really has to come down to educating drivers and cyclists, as well, to share the road," Moore told MySA. "I think we’re in a time where it seems like the most dangerous time to cycle. I see more people running red lights, and that’s extremely dangerous to cyclists."

That’s why, Moore said, the annual Ride of Silence event, taking place a …

Exploring Key West

Texbiker.net Posted on May 17, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 17, 2022

Today’s bike was a low effort one as I rode around the perimeter of Key West and some side streets. The weather cooperated with the temperature in the mid 80’s with lots of sun and light wind. I went by several beaches, watch 4 jet fighters fly over, rode some bumpy streets, listened to many crowing roosters, and marveled at the number of people riding bikes.

The ride began at 10:16 AM as I rode away from my hotel on Duval Street and ended at 12:04 PM back there. I did the obligatory visit to the southernmost point marker where people were lined up to take photos. I rode by a tractor cleaning the beach of smelly seaweed or something like it.
