About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New segment of Sims Bayou Greenway now complete and open

Juhi Varma | www.houstonchronicle.com

Houston community leaders celebrated the opening of a new 1.4-mile segment along Sims Bayou Greenway connecting Glenbrook Park to Bellfort Avenue.

Construction on this part of the 10-foot wide hike-and-bike trail of Sims Bayou Greenway began in spring 2021 and is now complete.

The Bayou Greenways project, led by the Houston Parks Board, aims to complete a 150-mile interconnected network of trails along Houston’s main waterways.

“The completion of this new section of the Bayou Greenways project is another step toward a more connected City,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Not only will Houstonians living near this segment of Sims Bayou reap the …

Inside 2022 Red Bull Rio Grande Gravel: Marfa, Texas – Cibolo Creek Ranch

JOM | www.gravelcyclist.com

“Red Bull is bringing gravel cycling to west Texas with the debut of Red Bull Rio Grande Gravel. Beyond the chili cookoffs, mysterious lights and country music lies a peaceful landscape with treacherous terrain. Gravel cyclists from across the U.S. and around the world are gearing up for the ultimate, Texas-sized test of strength and endurance. Just 30 miles south of Marfa in the foothills of the Chinati mountains, the pavement ends and the race begins!” – Red Bull

In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew flew in all the way from North Central Florida, to roll with fellow gravel cyclists across this tough, scenic, and hot, mixed-surface course. JOM opted for the 75-mile course, but made a dynamic change (aka cut it short), to complete two laps of the 50-miler, and call it a day. This fun event features beautiful scenery, DJ’s on course!, challenging course conditions, and more! …

Some good news about safety. Heights Blvd. repaving includes a buffer between the bike and car lanes! Protected would be ideal but this is a big improvement when you've seen cars use the bike lane as a passing lane which is terrifying. pic.twitter.com/3gGQakhT1p

Some Heat, Some Wind, Dog Encounter Saved By Car

Texbiker.net Posted on May 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 9, 2022

No Giro d’Italia racing today so I got ready and left a little earlier at 9:38 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose a northerly route, “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch”, taking advantage of a tailwind on the way to Tavola and paying the headwind tax on the way back to Kingwood. I biked 35.35 miles. Summer is getting closer with the temperature at 84 and the wind from the south at 12 mph. When I finished at 12:31 PM the temperature was the same but the wind increased to 21 mph from the SE. No wonder pedaling back to Kingwood took so much effort.

5-9-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch

Five times I’ve rode this route in 2022. Four times on my Cervelo and one time on my Lynskey R300. The image above compares the five rides.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report the total riding time was 2:51:00. I made 33 RD shift changes. The longest gearing used was the 35×13 for 1:18:49 (19.4 miles) followed by the 35×15 at 1:11:51 (12 miles). RD Shifts/Mile 0.93/Mile.

The brown and white dog returned to the Rock Creek and Northpark intersection. He was extra aggressive today but fortunately I got on the other side of a car to shield me from him.

Weather conditions: start 84 (humidity 75%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph; finish 88 (humidity 69%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind SE 21 mph.

Opinion: Bike lanes are useless unless you maintain them

Letters to the Editor | www.houstonchronicle.com

Bike lanes

Regarding “Is Houston becoming more bike-friendly? A car-free developer says yes,” (May 1): I rode the route described in this article and have a few comments.

If Lava Sunder and Joe Cutrufo are comfortable riding on a six-lane thoroughfare and cutting through a residential street that crosses two busy streets without street lights then I don’t see why they need bike lanes of any kind. .

They finally get to the Waugh Drive protected bike lanes with the green paint. These are fine when they’re not blocked by residents’ garbage cans as they were when I rode there or when they are not covered with debris which they …

Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour kicks off in Waco

by: Malley Jones | www.fox44news.com

WACO (Fox 44) — The 19th annual Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour kicked off in Waco Saturday morning.

Throughout the tour, LOSCOL brings awareness to the need for life-saving donations of blood, marrow, organ, and tissue.

The cyclists will ride each day in honor of a Texan who has been a donor or recipient of blood, marrow, stem cells, organs, tissues or for someone searching for a donor.

Donate Life Texas says just one organ donor can save up to eight lives and impact 75 others.

Sarah Pipkin-Love is one of the cyclists for LOSCOL…something she is able to do thanks to her …

Grant and Voss win inaugural titles at Red Bull Rio Grande Gravel

By Jackie Tyson | www.cyclingnews.com

Pre-race favourite Colin Strickland finishes third in new Texas off-road event

Emma Grant and Paul Voss entered the record books as the inaugural winners of the Red Bull Rio Grande Gravel, which started and finished at the Cibolo Creek Ranch outside Marfa, Texas on Saturday.

Dubbed as the “dule among gravel’s best in the far out west”, the new 127-kilometre event offered 1,275 metres of climbing across dirt and gravel roads.

Grant dominated the small women’s field in the Rio Grande Gravel, sealing the victory in 4 hours, 40 minutes and 47 seconds for a 25-minute advantage over runner-up Jenn Real. The two competed a week ago at the Belgian Waffle Ride in California, Real finishing 18th and Grant following one spot behind in 19th position. In Texas, Grant made a statement by finishing well ahead of Real, while Celene Oberholzer finished third.

In the men’s division, Voss hammered across the bumpy, dry terrain in the …

Heat, Wind, New Route Streets Combination

Texbiker.net Posted on May 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 8, 2022

Wrapping up the week with today’s bike ride. After church I watched stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia before getting ready to ride. The weather had time to heat up and ge the wind blowing. I rode away on my Lynskey R300 at 1:39 PM. I chose a route with a combination of streets that I haven’t rode before and labeled it “Kingwood – Eagle Springs – Walden – Atascocita”. The streets were ones I rode as part of various routes but not in this combination. Before the ride the week totaled 228.72 miles and with today’s 25.98 miles the week ended with 254.69 miles, the most miles in a week this year. This was the most miles in a week since the week of April 20th to 26th, 2020 when I biked 262.12 miles. May biking totals 276.08 miles towards my 700 mile goal.

5-8-2022 Week Bike Rides Summary End of Week
5-8-2022 Week Bike Rides Summary End of Week

Three rides were 40+ miles contributing to the highest week in 2022 so far. Five rides on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and two on the Lynskey R300. The average distance was 36.38 miles.

Wind speed increased from yesterday. Riding to Eagle Springs Parkway was mostly into the headwind. Summer like temperatures produced salt stains on my gloves and arm sleeves. Weather during the ride: start 89 (humidity 64%, dew point 75), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph gusts 23 mph; finish 89 (humidity 63%, dew point 74), a few clouds, wind SE 15 mph gusts 27 mph.
