About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

College Station City Council Considering Changes To Regulations Covering Ridesharing Bicycles And Related Vehicles

Bill Oliver | wtaw.com

After the College Station city council issued a proclamation for National Bike Month at its last meeting, there was an update on regulations covering ridesharing or dockless bicycles and related vehicles.

No action was taken on nine changes proposed by staff to city regulations. The list includes setting a 15 mile per hour speed limit and lower in designated areas, allowing electric bicycles and scooters, and requiring a specific percentage of spaces in bicycle racks for traditional bikes.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Cunha said there was not enough room for regular bicycles due to the …

Shaun’s east-to-west solo Route 66 tour

Day 30: Erick, OK to McLean, TX

Monday May 2, 2022, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 1,223 miles (1,968 km) When I look back at this tour in a few months, if someone asks me to describe it in one word, that word will have to be "WIND!"

Today was another day of grueling headwinds, but it was warm, and the roads were quiet. My legs were completely "done" at the end of the ride!

Video of a windmill spinning fast in the wind: https://www.tiktok.com/@a.shaun.ivory/video/7093263094255865131

I had a few notable stops today. First I stopped at the Conoco Tower Station in Shamrock, and met some wonderful ladies! I talked to Theresa and Hazel for a half-hour or so. We talked about the wind, and I mentioned that I was going to unfriend anyone on Facebook who told me I was going the wrong way. Hazel said she had Facebook, but didn’t know how …

Day 31: McLean, TX to Conway, TX

Tuesday May 3, 2022, 48 miles (77 km) – Total so far: 1,271 miles (2,045 km) This was the least windy day yet! It was amazing. I forgot what it was like to ride like this! It felt effortless and peaceful even when I didn’t have a slight tailwind! The headwinds are back for the next couple days, but I loved this respite.

I stopped to take pictures a couple times, but mostly just kept riding. This was the first leg of the trip that took place on the Interstate highway (I-40). It was just fine. The trucks are noisy, but the shoulder was generous and clean. A few of the truckers gave friendly honks and waved. This happens when …

Video: Man biking across country for traumatic brain injury awareness passes through Texoma

By Lauren Rangel | www.kxii.com

SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – “What a day, what a day, got the wind at my back, sun in my face,” said biker William Galloway as he neared the Texas border from New Mexico.

Galloway knows the American roads well.

“Traffic beeps at me sometimes,” said Galloway. “Must look too sexy on my bicycle.”

He didn’t always live his life speeding down the side of the road.

Seventeen years ago, his world stopped.

He said a drunk driver hit him, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

“It’s just so frustrating because I wanted to take it out on the guy that hit me, take it out on the system,” said Galloway. “I didn’t ask …

Sporadic Mist, Wet Roads, Cervelo Gets A Bath

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 3, 2022

I didn’t check the weather radar before getting ready for today’s bike ride. As I sat at the breakfast table putting on my shoes I heard rain hitting the patio cover. It didn’t last long but the driveway and streets were wet. I waited a few minutes thinking about riding Zwift but since the rain stopped I decided to go on my planned route, “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman”. This began at 10:28 AM as I rode away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. This would be the third ride on this route in 2022, all three on my Cervelo bike. I rode 38.92 miles about the average distance. I added the circle of streets in Kingwood Greens thinking this would get me close to 37 miles. I’m 82.68 miles for the week and 104.07 for the month, 15% of the way to my 700 mile goal.

5-3-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood to Ramsey Road - Huffman
5-3-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman

Weather continued to affect the ride with short stretches of light rain mist and wet roads. As I rode to Ramsey Road on Old Atascocita Road I glanced in my mirror to see what looked like threatening clouds to the west. Later biking west on FM 1960 the shoulder was wet until I got to the middle over Lake Houston. To go along with the sporadic mist the wind strengthened. The hardest place was riding east on Old Atascocita Road from FM 2100. There isn’t much to get in the way of the wind when it comes from the south and southeast.

The AXS.SRAM.com ride report highlights: 3:05:08 total biking time, 35×13 gearing ride time 1:35:37 (23.5 miles), 35×15 gearing ride time 1:06:09 (11.4 miles), 31 RD shifts, and 2 FD shifts. I did the FD shifts to remind myself how to do them.

The Cervelo needed a bath after finishing the bike ride at 1:37 PM.

The road construction will close the Pinehurst Trail Drive crossing of FM 1960 from May 9th to the 16th.

RGV cyclists push for more mountain bike trails

by: Xochilt Lagunas | www.valleycentral.com

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A group of cyclists in the Rio Grande Valley are working to finalize the “Six Shooter Junction” trail at Harlingen’s C.B. Wood Park.

While there are several cycling trails throughout the RGV, David Hernandez, founder of the Valley Off-Road Bicycling Association (VORBA) said there is a lack of off-road trails for mountain bikers.

“We don’t have anywhere to ride unless we build trail and/or if we maintain the trails that we already have,” said Hernandez.

He said the “Six Shooter Junction” trail will help complete the 10-mile cycling trail system at the park, one of five trail systems VORBA continues to fight for. …

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Kyle Field was filled with an Aggie-sized crowd for the Texas MS 150 finishing day Sunday.

College Station Mayor Karl Mooney explained how the event finally got to happen in the city this year.

“To have the Texas MS 150 here is huge,” Mayor Mooney said.

Reflections and Lessons Learned

Wednesday April 20, 2022 My first group tour was a good experience. Although I rode alone most of the time, I enjoyed the company of our teammates at rest stops along the route and at our campsites. Riding with a group did not present any significant constraints. We were all free to ride and explore at our own pace. The biggest advantage to riding with a group was at mealtime. We ate far better than I would have traveling alone. And everyone was only responsible for preparing one meal cycle (dinner in the evening, breakfast and lunch the following day) during the entire trip, leaving us lots of free time during afternoons and evenings.

Among the comforts and conveniences of a van-supported tour: …

What a night behind the Traveling Tiger Center Texas 87 Truck Stop. It made sense on paper, being that it was halfway between Van Horn and El Paso. Another option would have been a hotel twenty miles further into yesterday’s headwind. Yesterday after I arrived, I was able to sit at a table at the back of the store for hours while I recharged my devices and caught up on work. When it got dark, I set up my tent out back. There was enough space for two hundred trucks in the lot, but there were only thirty. The truck stop was noisy. While setting up my tent I got pricked by a goat head that tore its way into my finger. A car alarm …

Flipping A Calendar Page; No Impact On Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on May 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMay 2, 2022

I thought flipping the calendar page over to a new month the wind returned to normal but not on today’s bike ride. Maybe choosing to ride north to Splendora wasn’t such a good idea because of the strong SE wind on the return. My legs got tested big time. So much so that I needed to stop a couple of times to let them recover. The ride began at 10:31 AM as I rode away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. This would be the first time biking to Splendora since last August 9th. Today’s ride also turned out to go the longest distance of 2021 and 2022 bike rides to Splendora. I’m not sure why it was slightly longer though. I checked the map from August 9th and thought I followed it. By the end of the ride at 2:10 PM I biked 43.74 miles. My goal for May is 700 miles. May biking will be different and getting those miles will will require some extra effort.

5-2-2022 Bike Rides Summary 2021-2022 Kingwood-Splendora-Kingwood
5-2-2022 Bike Rides Summary 2021-2022 Kingwood-Splendora-Kingwood

Above shows all of the 2021 bike rides on the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route in 2021 and 2022. Three different bikes.

Wind is the story of today’s bike ride. The weather conditions: start 81 (humidity 74%, dew point 72), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph gusts 20 mph; finish 84 (humidity 68%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph gusts 33 mph. Getting to Splendora I enjoyed a mostly tailwind and the effort wasn’t too hard letting me use the 35×13 gears mostly. Getting back to Kingwood was another story. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the 35×15 gear took the most riding time at 2:24:01 out the total 3:32:48 riding time. At times the gusts were so strong that I leaned the Cervelo into the wind to compensate. My legs worked hard but I changed from the 35×13 gearing to 35×15 riding south because I only rode at 7 to 10 mph into the wind. I made 31 RD shifts. The few times headed back to Kingwood where I rode to the west gave my legs a breather. Maybe a shorter bike ride to the north would’ve not been so hard on my legs.

I tried using the Tickr Fit heart rate monitor strap today thinking maybe my skin wouldn’t get inflamed but that failed. I have a red patch of skin and some swelling. Back to the cut off sock.
