About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Get Involved spotlight: Ghisallo Cycling Initiative

By Michael Lee | www.kut.org

From Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, this month’s Get Involved spotlight organization:

Ghisallo Cycling Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 with programs in Austin and San Antonio. The name “Ghisallo” derives from the patron saint of cycling, Madonna del Ghisallo. We envision a community of comfortable and confident lifelong riders and our mission is to enable historically underserved populations to access their interests by bicycle.

Ghisallo has three programmatic divisions segmented by age group:

-- Cycle Academy (https://cycleacademy.org) is focused on enabling youth to develop into self-sufficient and confident riders who have the skills and knowledge to use their bicycles for transportation without depending on adults. With a focus on exploration, navigation, and transportation, we create the opportunity for youth to explore and connect with their communities, to learn to navigate and access the city, and to use their bikes for transportation to the park, the pool, their friend’s house, and school.
-- City Cyclist (https://citycyclist.org) is focused on adults as well as the general public ...

I slept great on a couch in the front room of Warm Showers hosts Manu and Jane in Marfa. Last night after dinner we had sat outside and listened to the roar of distant thunder. I got up this morning when I heard Manu making coffee. I took a wefe before Jane headed off to work. It was clear and sunny, and 58°F. The wind was forecast to be out of the north today. In addition to the usual I was wearing my sweater, leg-warmers, and socks. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I rode back into the center of town to return to the route. I then stopped at a Stripes for a Starbucks Triple Shot Energy Cafe Mocha, an Orchard pure 100% orange juice, and a pack of Hostess coffee cakes.

Cut Off Sock, More Wind. Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 29, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 29, 2022

No need to wait for the temperature to warm up before today’s bike ride but I did watch stage 3 of the Tour de Romandie. The scenery was beautiful but I don’t know what all of the yellow plants are. The scenery is good here too. I chose my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route heading north and then back to the south. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike which needs the chain lubed. I will wax it this afternoon. I biked this route 5 times so far in 2022. Today was the shortest distance biking 31.43 miles (Strava’s calculation). This pushed my week to 180.43 miles (or 180.44 in SportTracks), well within reach of hitting 200+ for the week with tomorrow’s bike ride. April biking totals 981.65 miles.

4-29-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood

Starting the bike ride at 11:05 AM I headed north along US59/I-69 enjoying some help from the tailwind. But the headwind on the way back south felt strong and I thought my legs were tired but when I got home at 1:44 PM and checked the weather I saw the wind increased big time and I didn’t think my legs did that bad. Weather conditions: start 79 (humidity 71%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph; finish 82 (humidity 65%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind S 20 mph gusts 25 mph. I pedaled hard riding south but just couldn’t overcome the headwind.

I rode with somewhat bare arms today to get some sun on them. Watch the video to find out about the cut off sock.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report confirmed my effort into the wind. The total riding time was 2:22:48 and I used the 35×15 gear for 1:22:50 of that. I used the 35×13 gears 39:19, probably riding to FM 1485. Only 27 RD shifts which makes sense with so much riding time in the 35×15 gears. I rode 16.9 miles in the 35×15 and 10.5 miles in the 35×13 gearing.

Davy Crockett Classic Rolls Through Houston County

By Will Johnson | messenger-news.com

HOUSTON COUNTY – The Davy Crockett Classic returned to Houston County last weekend as cyclists from all over Texas and other parts of the US descended on the oldest county in Texas for two days of competition.

The first day of competition saw the cyclists start early in the morning on April 23 with a time trial. The time trial was an out and back course beginning in front of …

I slept well in room B6 in the Fort Clark Springs Motel. It never did rain last night and thunderstorms were now forecast for today. I was well-rested and prepared for whatever would come my way. The goal was Seminole Canyon State Park, which was after Comstock. That would make tomorrow’s haul to Sanderson only 80 miles. Tomorrow had originally been scheduled as a 121 mile day. A sign reminded me that I was still on the Texas Pecos Trail. I was wearing my freshly laundered short-sleeve jersey and bicycle shorts, and I was listening to WFMU’s $mall ¢hange. I took a left on US Highway 90. I was getting close to the …

I slept well at Seminole Canyon State Park at primitive site #44. Last evening I sat at the picnic table and enjoyed a nice hot serving of Backpacker’s Pantry Pad Thai, along with ice cold bottles of Fat Tire. I met some neighboring campers who were motoring from Minneapolis. They would be heading to Big Band which I regret that I wouldn’t be visiting. It rained throughout the night and my tent fly was soaked in the morning. Last night got cold and I enveloped myself in my silk liner and sleeping bag.

This morning was a slow pack up under a slight sprinkle. Everything was wet, which was good for the locals. I had to stow my drenched tent fly underneath the rack pack. It was overcast when I departed and the rain had subsided by the time I started. In addition to the usual I was wearing leg-warmers, socks, a sweater, and a rain jacket. Bunnies and road runners were bounding through the surrounding scrub. I saw a …

Houston’s bike infrastructure is being pieced together with new projects on the horizon

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

From southeast Houston to west of downtown, the Bayou City’s bike infrastructure is getting beefed up.

Houston’s segmented network of bike lanes, trails and bayou greenways is slowly but surely taking even more shape with two major projects on the horizon—and even more coming up.

Dignitaries on Saturday will officially open a long-anticipated segment of the Sims Bayou Greenway in southeast Houston, which will create a crucial connection from Glenbrook Park to Interstate 45. The relatively small 1.5-mile segment will help form a continuous 5-mile trail from Park Place’s Milby Park to Stuart Park off Bellfort Street when factoring in existing trails to the east and west of the project.

Most notably, this section of trail will run through the …

Texas Parks & Wildlife Will Conduct Feasibility Study Of State Park Status For Northeast Texas Trail

John Mark Dempsey | www.ketr.org

Hank Pickering, a board member of the Northeast Texas Trail, says the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will conduct a feasibility study of adopting the NETT as a state park.

The NETT, about 130 miles long from about Farmersville to New Boston on former railroad right of way, would be the only such trail in Texas to be accepted as a state park. The 237-mile Katy Trail in Missouri has state park status. National Trail Days is Saturday, April 23 and Hank says a 5-K run and other events are planned for that day in Wolfe City. And the "Gran Fondo" bike ride on the NETT from Roxton to Clarksville is coming up Saturday, April 30. Hank says Sugar Hill Adventures in Farmersville is now offering shuttle rides on the NETT.

Soldiers welcomed cyclists in Ride 2 Recovery event

By Jana Lynn Kilcrease | kdhnews.com

FORT HOOD — The 1st Cavalry Band struck up the right mood Thursday as 21 cyclists approached the III Corps Headquarters building as part of the annual Road 2 Recovery Texas Challenge. The group was escorted to the front steps amid cheers from Fort Hood soldiers, supporters, friends and III Corps deputy commander Maj. Gen. Steven Gilland, who exchanged several “high fives” with riders.

Gilland gave a brief history of the organization and its mission. Founded in 2008, Project Hero, which organized the 500-mile bicycle ride from San Antonio to Fort Worth, is a groundbreaking national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping veterans and first responders affected by post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury achieve rehabilitation, recovery, and resilience in …

Bike ride to honor little heroes

www.itemonline.com

Operation Red, White and Bike announced a special fundraiser scheduled for Saturday May 21. Organizer Larry Reid, 77, has planned to take his TREK bicycle for a ride from the Huntsville, Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to the Texas Bucket List Store in College Station. This trip is over 50 miles. He is looking to raise awareness and inviting individual and corporate sponsors to donate to Operation Red, White and Bike in connection with this event.

Reid, a native Texan and proud alumni of Sam Houston State University class of 1968 co-founded Operation Red, White and Bike to honor children of Combat Wounded Veterans and Veterans Killed in Action (Purple Heart Recipients) with New TREK bicycles.

He began this mission in 2009. The first recipient was 6-year-old Blaine Rich. Today, Rich is a freshman at Sam Houston. First …

The history of ‘Soul Patrol’ and its Juneteenth plans

northdallasgazette.com

Soul Patrol started as a result of several African American cyclists coming together on Saturday mornings to ride and fellowship together.

During the rides, a compact speaker would be placed on one of the bikes for the cyclists to jam to old school R&B.

It wasn’t long before we decided we should design a cycling jersey for our group of cyclists, but first we needed a name. …

April Wind Gusts Prevail. Road Construction Updates

Texbiker.net Posted on April 28, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 28, 2022

I wasn’t going to wear a new bike jersey on today’s bike ride but when I took the old jersey out of the closet I changed my mind. The old one looked dated and in fact it has a date on as part of the graphic. I dropped it on the donate pile in my closet and opened the Fire Lord Primal jersey bag. A new jersey bike ride today.

With that out of the way I dressed for the ride. Since its Thursday the route should go to the south and east. To move closer to a 200+ mile week I chose my “Stroker Road – Huffman” route with the typical distance around 41 miles. Today I rode some side streets in Kingwood Greens as I headed south for the first time. I started the ride at 11:01 AM and finished at 2:37 PM and biked 43.56 miles. Now my week totals 149 miles. Today was the 2nd ride on this route in 2022. The previous ride reversed the order of some roads going to Huffman and then to Stroker Road versus today riding to Stroker Road and then Huffman. The route allowed me to check the road construction progress in two areas in the video.

4-28-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-Stroker Road-Huffman

April wind gusts still prevail. Weather for the bike ride: start 77 (humidity 72%, dew point 67), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph gusts 17 mph; finish 82 (humidity 65%, dew point 69), partly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph gusts 22 mph. My legs weren’t the best riding into the wind. I worked to keep my speed at 13 mph or higher but they struggled.

The AXS.SRAM.com ride report data surprised me with the most riding time in the 35×13 gears despite the wind gusts and exposure east of FM 2100. The overall riding time was 3:10:42 and I rode 1:38:26 using 35×13 and 1:13:50 using 35×15. Looking at the distance in each of those gears 35×13 was 24.1 miles and 35×15 was 15.2 miles. I was an active gear changer with 42 RD shifts, 0.96 shifts per mile.
