About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Central Texas dad trains for 600 mile bike tour to raise awareness for organ donation

By Megan Vanselow | kwtx.com

BELTON, Texas (KWTX) – On May 7, Chance Sebek will join eleven other bikers to ride 600 miles through Texas, honoring transplant donors, recipients and those on the waiting list with the Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour.

“I was very fortunate to apply and be selected to be a rider in the tour,” Sebek said.

He says he got into cycling during the pandemic, but has had an interest in raising awareness for organ donation for the last 12 years, when it saved his daughters life.

“She had a liver transplant when she was 5 1/2 months old and she has been doing great ever since,” his wife Megan explained. …

Texas’ first ski-lift bike park takes mountain bike adventures to new heights in the Hill Country

By Celestina Blok | dallas.culturemap.com

At Spider Mountain Bike Park in Burnet, what goes up must come down.

Located on Lake Buchanan about an hour northwest of Austin in the Hill Country, the attraction is the only year-round ski-lift bike park in the U.S. (In fact, it’s the only place in Texas with a ski-lift, period.) Opened just before the pandemic, in 2019, the park draws mountain bikers from across the country for its year-round access to downhill, gravity-fueled biking terrain.

Here bikers (and their bikes) ride a chairlift called the Texas Eagle up 350 feet to the mountain’s peak, where they can choose from one of 10 different bike trails — from beginner to expert — to cruise back down.

“To have a chairlift in the middle of the Hill Country is really exciting whether you’re a …

Texas sisters with multiple sclerosis ready to bike the MS 150 this weekend

Lindsay Peyton | www.houstonchronicle.com

Saturday marks the culmination of a 10-year journey for Cypress resident Karen Adewale.

That’s how long it has been since she promised herself to tackle Bike MS: Texas MS 150, a two-day bike ride that is a major fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Adewale planned to compete, but COVID-19 canceled the 2020 event, and rain shut out the 2021 ride.

This is her year, she said. …

Improvements from Bonnie Road to West 35th Street

www.austintexas.gov

Austin Public Works and Austin Transportation have partnered to complete a transformational sidewalk project on Exposition Boulevard this month. The new improvements extend from Bonnie Road to West 35th?Street and include new and repaired sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian crossings, and intersection safety improvements. This work completes a fully ADA-accessible route on either side of Exposition Boulevard from Lake Austin Boulevard all the way to West 35th Street. The improvements also create a safer route for students to walk or bike to nearby Casis Elementary School and O. Henry Middle School and safer access for everyone to neighborhood day care centers, libraries, churches, stores, and parks.

“Every child should be able to walk or bike to school safely,” said Mayor Pro Tem Alison Alter of Council District 10, where these safety and mobility improvements are located. “While these safe routes are created for …

Wounded warriors cycle into Killeen auto dealership

By Thaddeus Imerman | kdhnews.com

With the clanging of nearly a dozen cow bells and a police escort to aid them in, several wounded warriors and first responders rode their bicycles into the parking lot of Cleo Bay Subaru in Killeen on Wednesday afternoon. The riders were taking part in the six-day Ride 2 Recovery Challenge, organized by Project Hero, that spans 500 miles.

Officials from the dealership on East Stan Schlueter Loop organized a lunch for the riders to partake in, which is something it has done since 2016, save for two years the ride did not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s one of the most rewarding things that we get to do as an organization,” said Michele Marquez, the assistant controller of Cleo Bay Subaru. “You’re looking at people that are wounded warriors and first …

Texas MS 150 to end in College Station for the first time

By Conner Beene | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Expect a part of College Station to transform into one large bike trail on Sunday. The largest multiple sclerosis fundraiser in the nation the Texas MS 150 bike ride will end at Kyle Field for the first time in its over 30-year history.

Residents can expect to see over 7,000 cyclists near Texas A&M’s campus on Sunday. The event was supposed to come to College Station a few years ago but things out of the committee’s control put a stop to their plans. “2020 we had the pandemic and last year we, unfortunately, had some thunderstorms, so we’ve ordered some unbelievable weather for Saturday, April 30th and May 1st so …

Blue Sky, Light Wind, 70’s. What More To Ask For?

Texbiker.net Posted on April 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 27, 2022

For Wednesday’s bike ride I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route going north. After watching a tight finish of stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie I was ready for a good bike ride. Before leaving I did a couple of yard chores and then got dressed. I thought it is was a little chilly so I wore shorts, a long sleeve T-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey. This was one of the few kits where I have matching shorts and jersey. You can see them in the video.

Wheels down on my Lynskey R300 bike at 11:20 AM and finishing at 2:02 PM. I biked 36.71 miles per Strava’s calculation improving the week’s mileage to 105.44 miles setting up a potential 200+ mile week. April totals 884.8 miles, well over my 650 mile goal. If I add the one Zwift ride in April the total goes up to 906.64 miles. YTD I biked 2193.2 road miles plus 679.9 Zwift miles.

Today was the third bike ride on this route in 2022. Below shows how the rides compare.

4-27-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood
4-27-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood

Weather: start 74 (humidity 47%, dew point 53), a few clouds, wind E 9 mph; finish 78 (humidity 49%, dew point 58), fair, wind SE 10 mph. Space City Weather thinks today might be the last spring like day with “summer lite” coming tomorrow. The light wind was a welcomed change for my legs. I was able to get my average speed up to 14.6 mph on the return to Kingwood.

No AXS.SRAM.com ride report since I rode the Lynskey R300. I forgot to include the link in yesterday’s ride post.

Project Hero ride for PTSD awareness making pit stop in Austin

Author: Drew Knight | www.kvue.com

The 300-plus-mile ride will include breakpoints in Austin and Georgetown.

AUSTIN, Texas — More than 50 wounded veterans are currently rolling across the state of Texas as part of the 2022 Project Hero: Ride 2 Recovery Texas Challenge in hopes of raising awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The riders are biking from San Antonio to Arlington, with a stop in Austin and Georgetown on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Long-distance bike rides are interesting and demanding physical and mental challenges for even the ablest riders – but this one, in particular, achieves great things for the riders and in raising awareness of the challenges many veterans face daily," said organizers. "The Texas Challenge is offered by Project Hero, a nonprofit organization, that was founded in 2008 with …

A new trail will link Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and more cities. What should it be called?

By Sarah Bahari | www.dallasnews.com

A long-awaited pedestrian and cycling trail will soon span Dallas to Fort Worth, connecting several cities along the way.

Completion of the 66-mile trail is expected in 2024, but it’s still missing one big thing: a name.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments has narrowed the name to two possibilities — DFW Discovery Trail and DFW Trinity Trail — and is asking people to choose their favorite.

An online survey will be available for the next month.

In addition to the name, participants are asked to choose between two logo options. Both the name and logo choices were developed with public input through a virtual open house last year.

Once complete, the trail will link Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving and Grand Prairie. More than 50 miles are …

Knock Out Roses. Aftermath Of Biking In Rain.

Texbiker.net Posted on April 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 26, 2022

Not in a hurry to start today’s bike ride because the temperature was in the low 60’s. While I waited I watched the Prologue of the Tour de Romandie. Yesterday’s rain brought the cooler temperatures for the next couple of days. Finished watching the bike race I got ready and rolled the Cervelo Caledonia out the driveway. As I waited for some cars to pass another car pulled up on the other side of the street. They noticed the new plants and cleaned up front flower bed. They asked me what were the tall red roses because they wanted to plant some in their backyard. I told them Knock Out roses and where I bought them. They thanked me and drove off. I pressed the start button on the Bolt computer at 11:15 AM and started the ride on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route.

By the time I finished at 1:53 PM I biked 33.47 miles. Checking SportTracks this was the ninth time biking this route. Today’s ride was the average of the other 8 rides in distance, time, but higher in effort, and average power.

4-26-2022 YTD Bike Rides Atascocita – Walden – Huffman

The route took me to Atascocita Shores Drive at FM 1960 where I checked the construction progress. You can see that in the ride video. I also saw another cyclist in the parking lot of the church on Fairlake Lane and he is in the video. He told me his wife rides a bike just like my Cervelo. We chatted about the headwind and he told me where he rode to and back.

Weather conditions: start 69 (humidity 75%, dew point 61), mostly cloudy, wind NE 12 mph gusts 18 mph; finish 74 (humidity 66%, dew point 62), mostly cloudy, wind E 9 mph. The wind actually decreased during the ride for a change. I needed to dress warmer because of the wind and temperature: shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey.
