About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Southern Tier Bicycle Tour – March 22, 2022 – ?

Day 32 : Sanderson Texas to Alpine Texas

Friday April 22, 2022, 85 miles (137 km) – Total so far: 1,994 miles (3,209 km) I slept well last night on an air mattress in a private air conditioned room at the First Baptist church in Sanderson. I was up early once again to begin the ride in the dark with Don. The air was cool and the ride was through the desert the entire way to Marathon. It got light quickly and we stopped at a rest stop to chat with a retired guy from CA before the last miles to Marathon. There we are at the Cafe in town where I had a really good club sandwich. We’d ridden 55 miles and Don did not want to ride further but I did so we parted. I rode on with the intent of getting to Marfa which was another 47 miles. The sky was …

Why Cyclists Can Handle Heat Better Than Runners

Alex Hutchinson | www.outsideonline.com

An analysis of power data from pro cyclists quantifies the effects of hot and cold air temperatures on performance

Something is always lost in translation from the lab to the real world—a fact that’s captured in the concept of “ecological validity,” the extent to which the conditions in an experiment match those you’d encounter in the wild. One way around this problem is to skip the lab entirely and search for patterns in naturally occurring data. Cyclists, who gather extensive data about every pedal stroke with their power meters, make particularly good subjects for this kind of analysis, as illustrated by a new study in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance.

A team of Spanish researchers coordinated by David Barranco-Gil of …

Hardy Meredith | www.ksat.com

A man was shot in his buttocks while riding his bike just south of downtown overnight, according to San Antonio police.

The incident happened just before midnight, in the 500 block of West Mitchell Street, near I-10 and Probandt.

SAPD says the man, in his 20s, was riding the bike when someone in an SUV pulled up and fired several shots, hitting the victim in the buttocks.

Police say the man was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The person in the SUV got away.

Police have not given a description of the suspect.

Woman who hit, killed North Texas cyclist gets 12 years

By ilyes | jeepanelsplus.com

The Fort Worth woman who in 2018 hit and killed a cyclist in Grand Prairie will spend 12 years in prison after she was found guilty in Dallas County of failure to stop and render aid.

Kallie Wright, 42, was sentenced Thursday in the 291st Judicial District Court, according to KRLD.

Wright hit Calvin Middleton, a 43-year-old cyclist from Cedar Hill, from behind while he was riding his bicycle on Belt Line Road at the intersection with Interstate 20, police said in 2018. Police said Wright got out of her car after striking Middleton but got back in and drove away.

After police located her vehicle and issued a warrant for her arrest, Wright voluntarily surrendered to police.

Middleton, a sports enthusiast, had been training for the last year-and-a-half to a ride in the …

Checked Road Construction, Fought Wind, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 23, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 23, 2022

I wasn’t sure how the construction at Atascocita Shores and FM 1960 would impact today’s bike ride but I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route to find out. (The video shows what I found out) Wheels down and rolling on my Cervelo Caledonia at 9:05 AM. It was in the mid 70’s and windy (again). I hoped to see other cyclists along the ride. Next weekend the MS 150 may draw a lot of the cyclists I might normally see. This would be the 4th ride on this route in 2022. I finished at 11:30 AM.

4-23-2022 YTD Bike Rides Atascocita-Huffman-Walden

The ride data was average distance, speed, pace, effort, heartrate, and power. All 4 rides have been on the Cervelo bike.

April wind continued strong despite starting earlier than my normal time. Weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 77%, dew point 68), partly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 21 mph; finish 80 (humidity 68%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind S 18 mph gusts 32 mph. The wind work my legs over. Riding east over Lake Houston was hard without anything to block the wind. On the return heading west some of the 32 mph gusts shoved the Cervelo around. Fairlake Lane went into the headwind. It seemed the anticipated tailwind wasn’t as strong as the headwind. I probably could’ve dressed lighter. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey (should’ve wore a LS t-shirt), and a Texbiker short sleeve jersey on top. I was sweating but the wind dried it out.

Jumping over to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I learned:

  • total biking time: 2:21:45
  • 35×15 gears time 1:11:26, 16.1 miles
  • 35×13 gears time 48:05, 12.1 miles

6 other cyclists crossed my route as I crossed Lake Houston and on Old Atascocita Road. You can see them in the video. The GoPro mount helps me get quick shots now that it rides on the Garmin mount. As you can see in the video thumbnail, I don’t shave my legs.

Southern Tier Bicycle Tour – March 22, 2022 – ?

Day 31 : Comstock, Texas to Sanderson, Texas

Thursday April 21, 2022, 89 miles (143 km) – Total so far: 1,909 miles (3,072 km) I slept so soundly last night. But once again I was up before the sun was and we actually left while it was still dark outside. We had an 88 mile J to Sanderson that had very limited services on that stretch. In Del Rio before we left for Comstock last night we stopped and picked up extra food and water for the trip. As we pulled out in the darkness I was dreading the long haul. One thing that was fortunate was the winds were tailwinds so that helped. As we started the night run my front bike light went out because it wasn’t fully charged. I had to stop on the shoulder of Route 90 in the darkness and …

The Wind Gives, The Wind Takes. New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2022

I watched the final stage of the Tour of The Alps as the racers rode in the rain. The roads were slick but no crashes while I watched. No rain here but wind awaited me when I started today’s bike ride. I managed to start the ride at 10:20 AM, a little earlier than yesterday. I started early enough to stop at Pat’s Donuts on FM 1314 for an apple fritter. I talk about how that turned out in the video. The bike today was my Cervelo Caledonia which reached 1,378 miles after the bike ride. I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd” route and rode 37.24 miles (Strava’s calculation). This pushed my week total to 186.42 and April road miles to 726.9 plus a Zwift ride for a total of 748.76. Year to date I bikes 2,715 miles on the road and Zwift. This was the third ride on this route in 2022.

4-22-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney - Gene Campbell Blvd Route
4-22-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd Route

Of the three rides today was the shortest distance and lowest average speed. SportTracks calculated today’s ride had the highest effort at 97. Two rides on the Cervelo and one on the Lynskey R300.

Lots of sunshine and wind. Getting to FM 1314 the wind helped or was neutral. From that point all the way back to Kingwood I pedaled into a strong headwind. My legs tried but I had to shift from the 35×13 to 35×15 gears. My speed dropped to 10 to 11 mph and my average speed went from 14.7 mph to 13.9 mph. At the start the wind was from the south at 14 mph and increased to 16 mph with 25 mph gusts during the ride. The temperature was in the upper 70’s increasing to 81 by the time I finished at 1:20 PM. Weather conditions: start 79 (humidity 76%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph; finish 81 (humidity 63%, dew point 67), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph gusts 25 mph.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows 25 RD shifts, total biking time 2:57:00, 1:29:16 in the 35×15 gears, 1:07:32 in the 35×13 gears. The distance in gears swapped: 17.6 miles for 35×13 and 15.6 miles for 35×15.

I stopped in Porters Mill at the pool for a short rest and took this photo.
