About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

TAMIU Celebrates Earth Day with New Bike Repair Station

www.tamiu.edu

You might say that this year’s Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Earth Day observance was a “wheely” big deal.

That’s because this Friday, April 22, TAMIU highlights its day-long observance of the international environmental awareness event with the dedication of a new Dustdevil Bike Repair Station. The station is designed to help provide a safe and enjoyable biking experience on campus, and encourages students and staff to use bikes as a means of transportation. The University has also installed new bike racks across campus and will be providing students with vouchers for free bike locks to further encourage use.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said the 300-acre campus truly lends itself to safe bike use.

“We wanted to provide a safe and enjoyable biking experience on campus so students and staff would be encouraged to use bikes as a means of transportation. Our new bike repair station includes an air pump …

Day 30 : Camp Wood,Texas to Comstock, Texas

Wednesday April 20, 2022, 111 miles (179 km) – Total so far: 1,820 miles (2,929 km) Today was a long day made longer. We set off with a target landing point that we extended due to weather predictions of high winds in the coming days. When I went to the convenience store in Camp Wood for a couple of microwave sausage biscuits a Gatorade and a cinnamon coffee cake I expected I’d be riding the 77 or do mile route to Del Rio, which was also the end of another map sheet (#4). Wahoo. The road there was rough but pretty much downhill through Texas hills and buttes that reminded me of Montana. There were few cars and the 50 mile ride to Bracketville seemed to fly by. There I stopped rust for …

Looking vs. Seeing

By hurronnicane | austinmountainbiking.com

I was riding at Pedernales Falls S.P. on Tuesday afternoon and lost my phone on the Juniper Ridge Trail. It fell out of the front pocket of my shorts and once I realized it was missing I had to backtrack to look for it. I found myself scanning the trail corridor intently and much less focused on the many obstacles I was riding through. It was an interesting sensation to be riding through almost continuous rock gardens but with a totally different focus than just minutes before. My anxiety had …

Hiding From The Wind. Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 21, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 21, 2022

I only needed 0.8 of a mile on today’s bike ride to reach my road miles goal of 650 for April. So I decided to ride the Spring Creek Greenway racking up 40.47 miles getting beyond that goal. It all started at 10:48 AM as I rolled out on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and finished at 1:57 PM. Under an overcast sky and upper 70’s it wasn’t too hot and the wind was a modest 9 mph. I figured all of the trees on the greenway would shelter me from some of the wind if it increased. This was my third ride on the greenway to John Pundt Park in 2022. This one was slightly shorter.

4-21-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Spring Creek Greenway
4-21-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Spring Creek Greenway

So far this week I biked 149.18 miles putting a 200+ mile week in reach with 3 potential biking days left. April now totals 689.6 road miles and 711.52 mile including one Zwift ride.

There weren’t a lot of people on the greenway with cyclists outnumbering other people. Two cars were parked at the I-69 trailhead and maybe 10 at John Pundt Park. On the way back I rode through Jesse Jones parking lot and saw 5 or 6 cars.

The greenway doesn’t require much gear changing with no traffic, no big climbs, and a couple of stop signs. I made 11 RD shifts over the 40.47 mile ride. I rode in the 35×15 2:38:29 out of the total time of 3:08:51 according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. Or 36 miles out of the 40.47 total.

Strava went crazy with top results. These are 4 of the total of 10: 2nd fastest time on Greenway Appendix (53s), 3rd fastest time on The Chute (1:23), 3rd fastest time on Logan’s Run (3:26), rd fastest time on 59-MM7.0 (31:48).

Texas Biking News April 20th 2022

This Cyclist Has Given More Than 450 Adaptive Bikes to Children in Need

Andy Simmons | www.rd.com

The idea for the McLindon Family Foundation began with one thoughtful act of kindness.

About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, an entrepreneur and avid cyclist, was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain that often causes balance disturbances.

When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel recumbent bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was pedaling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon gleaned from …

Students at Milam Elementary School learning to ride a bike.

EL PASO, Texas — Riding your bike at biking and hiking trails across El Paso is a great past time and a fun way to stay active. It’s a skill EPISD is hoping to help its students gain through new grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

EPISD was award $60,000 dollars to be able to purchase bikes for middle school students. It will go towards expanding its Bike-On Program.

So we want to introduce kids to those types of activities that are lifetime related activities that aren’t just based on sports," said John Adams, director of health, wellness, and physical education for EPISD. …

Day 29 : Vanderpool, Texas to Camp Wood, Texas

Tuesday April 19, 2022, 43 miles (69 km) – Total so far: 1,709 miles (2,750 km) This morning once again we were up before the sun. Last night the constellations and the bright white moon provided the nightly entertainment. I packed in the dark trying to use my cell phone light to stuff sacks and ensure nothing was dropped on the ground or left behind on the picnic table. I used this in lieu of my headlamp whose batteries were failing. I biked out if the camping area and saw Don waiting at the camp office to depart together. We were both dreading the three large climbs we had today. All we knew is they would be tough based on what east bound cyclists and locals forewarned. They were partly correct. The first hill on the way to Leakey was steep and a good distance. But I put it Into low gear and cranked it out. Afterwards we stopped in Leakey at a market where …

April Windiest Month. Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 20, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 20, 2022

According to Space City Weather April is the windiest month for the Houston area. That was the case for today’s bike ride.

I began the morning watching the Tour of the Alps, La Flèche Wallonne, and La Flèche Wallonne Féminine after overcoming some streaming technical difficulties. I spent time adding a number of events to the Texbiker event calendar. When I got ready for the bike ride I noticed the cadence sensor was not connected to the Bolt computer. Changing the battery fixed the problem and I rolled out on my Lynskey R300 at 11:27 AM. I chose the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route heading north before making the return ride to Kingwood. Today’s bike ride would be challenging due to the strong south wind; 21 mph with 31 to 33 mph gusts.

Getting to FM 1485 I had the help of a tailwind and battled the headwind through New Caney, Valley Ranch, and Oakhurst. Weather conditions: start 75 (humidity 84%, dew point 70), overcast, wind S 20 mph gusts 30 mph; finish 79 (humidity 76%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 21 mph gusts 33 mph. No need to dress for chilly weather today. I wore shorts, a LS T-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey.

I wasn’t happy with the mounting position of the GoPro camera and moved it to the handle bar to the right of the stem. Now the Bolt computer does not get in the way of the video as much as before. The photo shows the new position.

I biked this route 4 times so far in 2022. Looking at the summaries of the rides I was about average today. I rode the Lynskey and Cervelo bikes two times each.
