About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Síclovía is rooted in South America and has been a bi-annual event in the Alamo City for the decade.

SAN ANTONIO — Hundreds of bikers, skateboarders and walkers packed the streets of Southtown in San Antonio Sunday for the 19th Síclovía event.

The YMCA of Greater San Antonio hosted the family-friendly event in partnership with H-E-B, University Health, WellMed, and Lela Pharmacy.

The last Síclovía was held in September, more than a year after the pandemic changed the lives of everyone in some way. Síclovía is rooted in South America and has been a bi-annual event in the Alamo City for the decade.

For four hours on Sunday, a stretch of paved Southtown city streets belonged not to cars, but to bicyclists, kids on scooters and trikes, roller-skaters, baby strollers and joggers. And dogs. Lots of cute dogs.

They came out for the 19th Síclovía, a free, twice-annual event organized by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio. …

Find past Strava activities on a single map with new Find That Ride website

by Anna Marie Hughes | road.cc

New website lets you easily browse previous activities to find rides in a specific area

Strava does have its personal heatmap which allows you to visualise what ground you’ve covered. Orange heat represents your hottest/most ridden routes while grey heat is used for your least popular routes. However these heat lines are separate from your activities along with the data and photos you can have attached to the completed ride.

Michigan-based cyclist and creator of Find That Ride, Jeff Plotzke, said: “I’ve always wanted a way in Strava to be able to search for previous activities by browsing a map, as there are many times where I remember that I did a ride in a certain area, but don’t remember when I was there. …

Side Pockets, Chatting With Other Cyclists On The Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on March 28, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 28, 2022

March almost got away from without biking the spring Creek Greenway. Today’ was a great day to ride it. No bike races to watch and delay my start and the weather was nice and warm though a little windy. It’s March and wind is normal. Before the ride started I gathered two new bike kit items: a Primal short sleeve jersey and AeroTech Design bike shorts. Normally I wear Primal bike shorts but the AeroTech shorts had a unique feature: side pockets. I bought them to try out the pockets holding the GoPro camera instead of the rear jersey pocket. More about the shorts in a minute.

I rolled away on my Cervelo Caledonia at 10:26 AM. The route was on the Spring Creek Greenway to John Pundt Park. I added a couple side excursions at the Carter Park trailhead and at John Pundt Park. I wanted to be sure I rode 40 miles or more. The ride distance came in at 41.63 miles when I finished at 1:56 PM. Those miles put me over my 650 road mile goal for March with 686.3 miles. With a few more days I will add to that number. March 2021 I biked 709.8 road miles. This is a good start for a 200 mile week too.

Fortunately pine pollen doesn’t bother me too much. The pollen is in the air and riding the greenway put me in the thick of it. I took a picture of the pollen sticking to my water bottle when I stopped at the Jesse Jones Park trailhead.

Pine pollen stuck to my water bottle

This was the second time riding the route in 2022. The last time was February 22nd. Today’s ride was the most miles in the last 5 times but just barely. My average speed was “average”. It’s hard to ride fast on the greenway because of the turns and blind spots plus other people can appear quickly. Today there were some cyclists, not a many as I have seen sometimes, and people walking. At the Jesse Jones Park trailhead I stopped and chatted with 3 other cyclists, Jeff, Judy, and I can’t remember the other man’s name but he rode a white Trek. Later I caught up with Jeff and Judy at the u-turn under US59 and stopped again to chat. Judy was riding some hill to train for the MS 150.

Back to the AeroTech shorts. They have a gel pad which is not my preference but it was okay for the ride. The side pocket worked nicely holding the GoPro camera. In the video you can see my tan line on my legs which meant the inseam on these shorts didn’t match the Primal shorts I wear. Also the fabric is not as heavy as the Primal shorts. The AeroTech shorts fabric felt too thin for my preference. I will not buy another pair but will use these from time to time. I’m still looking for a better GoPro holder.

3-28-2022 AeroTech Design 3D Gel shorts with side pockets

Weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 61%, dew point 62), a few clouds, wind S 6 mph; finish 81 (humidity 48%, dew point 60), mostly cloudy, wind S 15 mph. The wind picked up during the ride but the trees dampened it some. I felt the headwind on the way to Pundt Park and less on the way back. The long sleeve and short sleeve jerseys were comfortable for the temperature and wind combination.

Not many RD shifts during the bike ride, 13 total from AXS.SRAM.com. Almost the entire ride time was spent in the 35×15 gear combination, 2:40:38 out 3:24:39. Once I was in the 35×15 gear there wasn’t many reasons to change on the greenway. Off the greenway I changed gears more often.

Top results galore from Strava for the bike ride. See the picture below. Having rode the greenway a number of times I didn’t expect this many results.

Goodwater Loop/Lake Georgetown

I rode the whole 28 mile loop for the first time this morning and I’m so glad I did the south side first. That trail is no effin joke. Brutal but fun as hell.

I started at Tejas and went counter clockwise. Really fun ride and I saw no one outside of some hikers and a couple bikes around Cedar Breaks and Tejas.

If you like 20 miles of cheese grater rock gardens and tech climbs this is the trail for you. Bring your patch kits! I didn’t get any punctures and I was shocked considering how sharp some of the rocks are in the gardens.

The Wind Had To Get The Last Gust In Before The Week Ended

Texbiker.net Posted on March 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 27, 2022

I was looking forward to today’s bike ride with great weather. When I got home I watched the highlights of the men’s and women’s Gent-Wevelgem races before getting ready for my bike ride. I rolled the Lynskey R300 bike outside and punched the “start” button on the Bolt computer at 1:34 PM. I chose the “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” for the third time this year. I was close to a 200 mile week and this route was long enough to get there. Finishing at 3:38 PM I rode 27.76 miles pushing me over the 200 mile mark.

3-27-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch

The week’s total of 223.74 miles was slightly less than last week’s 225.51 miles. This was the third 200 mile week for 2022. I rode all 7 days, 1 on Zwift and 6 on the road. As the week progressed the weather warmed up.

3-27-2022 Week Bike Rides Summary
3-27-2022 Week Bike Rides Summary

I wore a summer kit with the temperature in the 80’s and lots of sun. The wind wasn’t too bad except when I rode out in the open into the headwind. Weather conditions: start 83 (humidity 41%, dew point 57), mostly clear, wind SW 11 mph; finish 85 (humidity 34%, dew point 53), partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 18 mph. The wind had to get the last gust in before the week ended.

My legs felt good and I set a 2nd fastest time on first part (2:54) in Strava. I had to look that segment up to learn where it was. It is in Forest Cove on streets I normally bike in the opposite direction.
