About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Recall: 89,000 bike helmets sold at Walmart do not comply with safety standards

By Daniella Genovese | www.fox26houston.com

Tens of thousands of bike helmets sold exclusively at Walmart are being recalled due to a head injury risk, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Sakar International recalled the 89,000 Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets because they "do not comply with the U.S. CPSC federal safety standard for bicycle helmets," the recall notice said.

As a result, consumers are …

Dallas has bike momentum rolling but needs more off-road trails

By Dallas Morning News Editorial | www.dallasnews.com

Barry Bishop rides his mountain bike on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 on the North Shore Trail around Lake Grapevine in Flower Mound, Texas. North Shore is one of 22 trails maintained by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association. More are needed. (Ashley Landis/The Dallas Morning News)

Remember that spike in bicycle sales at the beginning of the pandemic? In June 2020, Woody Smith, owner of Richardson Bike Mart told Bicycling magazine that demand was “mind blowing.” Turns out, people have been pedaling those things instead of leaving them to collect dust in the garage.

That, along with some forward-thinking planning, is giving North Texas a chance to dramatically improve its bike culture. City leaders should do what they can to support this trend.

Nationwide rankings of the …

Author: Dominique Newland | www.kvue.com

The 28th annual Rosedale Ride kicked off Saturday morning at its new location, The Pitch.

AUSTIN, Texas — The annual Rosedale Ride, one of Austin’s premier bicycling events, is now hosted by The Pitch, northeast Austin’s newest hospitality, sports and entertainment destination for “food, fun, and fútbol."

Why Can’t All Bike Rides Be Chamber of Commerce Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on March 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 26, 2022

I paused watching the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on GCN+ to get ready for today’s bike ride. The temperature warmed up nicely with lots of sunshine. As I got ready I thought about ways to rearrange today’s route but settled on the typical Saturday “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. I rolled away at 10:54 AM on the Cervelo Caledonia. I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists with the late start but I saw three starting on West Lake Houston Parkway and later on Old Atascocita Road. Chamber of Commerce weather ruled for this ride. Light wind, 80’s, and lots of sunshine by the time I finished at 1:28 PM.

Surprisingly this was only the second time riding the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route in 2022. The other ride was March 5th.

3-26-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita - Huffman - Walden

In the video I said the ride would be 31 to 32 miles long but it turned out to be 33.5 miles. This pushed the week’s total to 195.97 miles. Looks like a 200+ mile week with Sunday’s bike ride. March is up to 761.64 miles, 617 of those on the road. My 650 mile goal for March is getting closer.

When I made the turn onto Fairlake Lane the construction crews were gone and nice smooth asphalt awaited the Cervelo’s tires. They just need to add the center stripes. I can’t remember when this road surface was better. The video shows how it looks. There is one hump that didn’t get ground down before the asphalt was applied. Riding south through the “S” curve near the mailbox of the first house on the right is where the little hump is. Not sure why that happened.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride information I made 37 RD changes. The most time was spent in the 35×15 gear combination at 1:18:18. Next was the 35×13 at 46:57. I thought it was reversed. Some ride I need to change the front chainring just to see if it works.

After several bike rides in strong wind this week it was good to experience a light wind ride. Weather conditions: start 75 ( humidity 56%, dew point 59), clear, wind S 6 mph: finish 83 (humidity 27%, dew point 46), clear, wind SW 6 mph. I wore one of the polyester long sleeve T-shirts under my short sleeve Texbiker jerseys. A good combination comfort wise. The long sleeves provided some sun protection.

Bike lane construction beginning on Spring Valley Road in Richardson

By Jackson King | communityimpact.com

The city of Richardson began installation work last week on new bike lanes along Spring Valley Road between Grove Road and Jupiter Road.

The new lanes will bring the total reach of bike lanes in Richardson to more than 25 miles on 14 different streets.

City officials said it plans to utilize two different designs for bike lanes along Spring Valley Road: a buffered bike lane and a bike lane adjacent to on-street parking. Both types will be present on the road, depending on the nearby surroundings.

Richardson was the first city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to be awarded the …

El Paso bypass

kenw | forums.adventurecycling.org

Hi. Enjoying the southern tier route a ton. Tomorrow I will hit El Paso. Time is tight as I have to meet someone that evening. Getting around Phoenix was no fun. I see the ACA route has a bypass of El Paso but it’s 5 or so miles longer. Anyone know what is fastest way though El Paso? Thanks.

Re: El Paso bypass John Nettles Sort of hard to know unless you live locally as I doubt more than a few non-locals have ridden both routes and kept track of the differences. My guess is that the bypass would be faster but not by much, i.e. maybe less than 30 minutes overall. Any time savings based on not having to stop at lights would be off set by the extra miles. However, there may be more places you might stop at and sight see, buy supplies, etc. along the main route so I guess that could change the equation. My suggestion is to ride an extra hour or two earlier. …

Tour de Houston annual bike ride welcomes cyclists back with scenic city path

By Steven Devadanam | houston.culturemap.com

Heads up, Houston cyclists: an annual bike ride is back and is welcoming participants to roll out. The annual Tour de Houston has returned after a hiatus due to COVID and runs Sunday, April 3.

Kicking off downtown, the ride will begin downtown at City Hall, travel west along Allen Parkway, with scenic views of Buffalo Bayou, the new tunnels on Memorial Drive, and northwest through Spring Branch and Cypress, before heading back to downtown.

The event is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants. As they pass through the route, riders will find fully stocked rest stops, bike repair support, and police and medical support. The ride will end with a celebration at City Hall for participants. …

No Car Friday: Meet the Houston council member who ditches her ride every week

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

"I like the sense of community that getting out of your car brings," Sallie Alcorn said.

Sallie Alcorn has gotten pretty good at dodging traffic while riding her late father’s blue Schwinn bicycle around the Bayou City.

On a recent weekday, the at-large Houston City Council member skirted easily around potholes and broken sidewalks while riding the four miles between her River Oaks home and a doctor’s appointment in Uptown.

She’s lived in Houston most of her life. She has a car. She knows it’s probably safer to be behind the wheel than pedaling through a busy highway intersection, but that …

New Jersey, New Glasses, 80 Degrees. Almost Perfect Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2022

Today’s bike ride sported two new things: the Primal Cosmic Cycle ’19 jersey and Tifoso Shout Out prescription cycling glasses. Along with those the sunny 80 degrees felt great while I rode the Cervelo Caledonia on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd.” route. Wheels down and rolling at 11:54 AM. The wind let up today but it still felt like the headwind was stronger than the weather report numbers. I biked 37.48 miles which improved the week’s total to 162.46 miles, putting a 200 mile week in reach with two biking days left. For the month I am up to 728.13 miles, the highest month since October 2021. Road miles at 583 are getting close to my 650 mile goal.

This was my second ride on this route in 2022. The previous ride was on January 18th. Today’s bike ride was slightly shorter by .6 of a mile but the average speed was 14.2 mph versus 13.6 in January. Riding time was 10 minutes shorter today at 2:38:52. My legs felt good. Looking at AXS.SRAM.com I learned I spent the most time in the 35×13 gear combination followed by the 35×15 gears. 47 RD shifts, only one shift where I used the left brake lever trying to shift to a bigger rear gear.

Weather conditions are getting closer to my preferred zone. Start 77 (humidity 31%, dew point 44), fair, wind NW 5 mph; finish 81 (humidity 17%, dew point 32), clear, wind N 0.

The Tifoso Shout Out glasses arrived this morning so I thought why use them during the bike ride. The prescription is not what I thought it would be but better than plain sunglasses. What I wanted was to be able to see the numbers on the Bolt computer as clear as with my regular prescription glasses. I used the same prescription and specified single vision which I think my regular glasses are. Other than the numbers on the computer all the rest was nice and crisp. I bought them from tifosioptics.com.

I earned two local legends in Strava: Local Legend on South Sprint to PHS and Local Legend on Shell – Stripes Cruise. I was riding at a strong pace on that section of FM 1314.
