About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Police say Kingwood cyclist at fault after being hit, killed by dump truck driver

Jay R. Jordan | www.lmtonline.com

Houston bike safety advocates say the collision highlights the need for new bike infrastructure.

A 26-year-old man on his bicycle was hit and killed by a dump truck driver near Kingwood early Wednesday, and Houston police were quick to blame the rider.

The cyclist, who was not immediately identified, was pedaling north on Texas Loop 494 near Hamblen Road around 4 a.m. when the driver hit him, according to David Rose, a sergeant with the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division. The big rig driver claimed the …

However, they have tentatively identified him as an 18-year-old man.

San Antonio police also are investigating the crash, which happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday on Basse Road near McCullough.

They say it appears the driver of a car was traveling westbound and may have been speeding before she lost control, rolling her car and hitting a cyclist on the side of the road. …

Smooth Asphalt, Strong Wind Again. Huffman – Liberty County Line Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 24, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 24, 2022

I wasn’t sure what to label today’s bike ride route. It was going to be one that I altered when I got to Fairlake Lane or not. The ride started at 12:07 PM with my riding the Lynskey R300 bike and finishing at 3:25 PM after biking 41.79 miles. This is one of the 40+ mile rides I mentioned yesterday if this week would reach 200+ miles. With today’s miles I am at 124.98 for the week and 690.65 miles for March. Of the 690.65 miles 545.9 miles are on the road and the rest in Zwift. I need 114 miles to reach my 650 road mile goal for March. I think it is in reach.

When I got to Fairlake Lane I saw fresh asphalt on one lane heading south so I changed to the route to go south on Fairlake Lane. (see the video for what the new smooth road looks like). With this change later in the ride I didn’t go to May community Center but stayed on Huffman – Eastgate Road to FM 2100. At Old Atascocita Road the equipment was laying asphalt for the lane back to FM 1960. The video shows all of the trucks lined up.

I haven’t mentioned the weather yet. I hoped the strong winds from yesterday had left and at the start of the ride the wind was a leisurely 10 mph from the west. As I rode to the east that wind picked up but i didn’t notice how much because it was helping me ride to the Liberty County Line. I got a taste of strong it was when I rode from Old Atascocita Road north on FM 2100 to Huffman but the trees sheltered me from some of the wind. Making the u-turn inside Liberty County to head back to the west the wind was waiting for me. Now it was from the NW at 15 mph with 26 mph gusts. It was hard pedaling all the way back to Kingwood. And the wind had chill to it!. I was glad of the clothing choice for the ride: no leg warmers but shorts, a heavy long sleeve jersey under a windbreaker jacket and half finger gloves. Except for the first 3 or 4 miles I was comfortable but could feel the chill from the headwind and not so much from the tailwind.

Overall weather conditions: start 67 (humidity 29%, dew point 34), clear, wind W 10 mph; finish 68 (humidity 26%, dew point 32), clear, wind NW 15 mph gusts 26 mph. During the ride the temperature didn’t reach the forecasted high of 70. Tomorrow’s forecast shows a high of 80. We’ll see if that happens. I’m ready.

No drive train for today’s ride since the Lynskey is mechanical shifting.

My ride east of FM2100 to Huffman – Eastgate Road earned me the Strava Local Legend on Huffman to Eastgate with 2 rides. This was the 2nd time riding the route in 2022 though today’s differed from the previous one by riding on Fairlake Lane.

Rice receives ‘silver’ distinction for bicycle-friendly campus

By Hajera Naveed | www.ricethresher.org

The League of American Bicyclists awarded Rice a silver designation as a Bicycle Friendly University, a place up from the bronze designation received in 2017. The silver designation will be active until 2025.

Lisa Lin, former transportation demand management manager at Rice, coordinated the re-application process along with help from Leadership Rice Mentorship Experience intern Trisha Gupta. Lin, who is now the first director of sustainability for Harris County, said that she helped implement the League of American Bicyclists’ suggestions for improvement from 2017, and focused on those improvements in the new application.

“It was really about telling our story of how we have improved since 2017,” Lin said. “In this …

The Denton City Council adopted the updated Mobility Plan and Denton 2040 Comprehensive Plan last night with a unanimous vote.

The Mobility Plan includes an updated Bike Plan and a new Pedestrian Plan. The Comprehensive Plan update maintains the city’s previous goal of encouraging more infill development, which can support more mobility options, reduce pressure to develop Denton’s rural fringe and enhance Denton’s fiscal and environmental sustainability.

March Wind Torture: 32 MPH Gusts New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 23, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 23, 2022

Late out of the gate for today’s bike ride starting at 12:25 PM. I waited for the temperature to get to 60 degrees after watching the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. Then my prescription cycling glasses arrived. I tried them on but there doesn’t appear to be a prescription on the lens. I exchanged a couple of phone calls and will return them to see if there is a problem or if I am expecting something different than what I ordered.

With all that done I got ready to ride into a very strong NW wind on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route going to the north. I dressed according to the temperature and the wind chill. I wore shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, wind jacket, and a new pair of Bellwether Windstorm full finger gloves. The gloves might’ve been over done for the end of the ride but while riding to Tavola I needed them to keep my fingers warm.

3-23-2022 Bellwether Windstorm Gloves-1

The Cervelo Caledonia bike performed well with my choosing the 35×15 gear for most of the ride according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride activity report. Only short sections on the return leg allowed me to switch to 35×13 when the wind let me. Weather at the start and the 3:18 PM finish: start 64 (humidity 33%, dew point 34), fair, wind NW 15 mph gusts 22 mph; finish 68 (humidity 27%, dew point 33), a few clouds, wind NW 20 mph gusts 32 mph. The wind gusts repeatedly pushed the bike from side to side depending on which direction I rode. My legs got a workout for sure pushing the pedals. I felt the difference whenever the trees and buildings blocked some of the wind. Even trees on the far side of US59 blunted the wind a little. There were times riding to Tavola when the road went east turning the headwind into a tailwind. My legs appreciated the rest.

This was the 3rd time biking this route in 2022. Today was the slowest average speed and highest effort and average power according to the SportTracks summary below. The distance was less at 35.84 miles. Those miles moved me closer to my 650 mile goal for March at 504.1 miles leaving 146 to ride. I am ahead of the pace to reach my goal. The week now totals 83.19 miles. I will need a couple of 40+ rides to get to 200.
