About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fifth Ward bike tours aim to educate community about gentrification, displacement in historically Black neighborhood

Sam González Kelly | www.houstonchronicle.com

Our Afrikan Family takes people through the "Storytime Bike Line" tour, a bike tour of Fifth Ward to teach residents and non-residents about the rich history of one of Houston’s oldest Black neighborhoods, on Saturday, March 19, 2022, in Houston.

Kendra London and Felicia Latson looked like captains of a Houston cycling team on a sunny Saturday morning, leading a peloton of riders in matching T-shirts down Lyons Avenue in a de facto Tour De Fifth Ward.

This race, however, didn’t culminate with medals. Instead, the goal for the Fifth Ward activists is to use the bike tour to educate fellow residents on gentrification and displacement, and encourage them to make their voices heard before the fabric of their neighborhood is irrevocably changed.

“If you don’t start coming to meetings and assisting with your voice, we are …

By Jackie Tyson | www.cyclingnews.com

Gravel veteran to continue gearing up form for Unbound with racing at new Red Bull Rio Grande Gravel series

Texas-based gravel guru Colin Strickland opened the season last weekend at MidSouth Gravel in Oklahoma, pushing through some ‘wild weather per usual’, snow-melt mud and multiple punctures for a 13th-place finish. Strickland came off a hard training camp in Jalisco, Mexico three days prior to the Oklahoma race, where he was runner-up in 2020, and is still working into his peak season form.

In three weeks Strickland will line up against many of his MidSouth Gravel competitors, including winner Cole Paton, third-place finisher Adam Roberge, John Borstelmann, Peter Stetina and Ted King, in Monterey, California for the …

Equipment (Discussion, For sale) » Pawn shops pretending that stolen bikes aren’t?

MichaelBluejay | bicycleaustin.info

Came across this review for Mustang Pawn. My understanding is that pawn shops are required to give the serial numbers of their bikes to APD so APD can match against reported bike thefts. The bike owner here claims that Mustang intentionally gave the wrong serial number of his bike to APD. While intent is hard to prove, the bike owner also says that Mustang forced him to sue to get his bike back, which isn’t likely something he’d make up, and if Mustang is that shady, then the idea of the …

Bicyclist fatally struck by vehicle after veering off North Side trail identified by medical examiner

Cody King | www.ksat.com

The bicyclist reportedly died from blunt force injuries

SAN ANTONIO – A bicyclist who was hit and killed by a vehicle after veering off of a trail on the North Side last week has been identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner.

Craig Steven Gulledge, 53, died from blunt force injuries he sustained in the incident, according to the ME.

Police were called around 7 p.m. Thursday to the Salado Creek Greenway in the 1900 block of NE Loop 410 near Post Oak Lane.

Gulledge was riding his bike when he disregarded a stop sign at an access road and rode into the path of a westbound vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid Gulledge, striking him, police said.

Authorities said the driver stayed at the scene until officers and first responders arrived. Gulledge died from his injuries at the scene.

Nothing malicious is suspected, according to SAPD.

First Day of Spring, Windy Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 20, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 20, 2022

Spring arrived today and I am ready. Nice weather for a bike ride: sunny, mid 70’s but strong wind from the SE at 22 mph gusts to 29 mph. Why not strong winds, it’s March. I started the ride after getting home from church at 1:30 PM and finished at 3:39 PM. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike on the “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” with some streets changes in Forest Cove compared to my only other ride on this route this year on February 20th. Today’s 27.92 miles was slightly longer than the previous ride and about a minute faster, 2:01:55 today. Maybe the strong tailwind sections helped me ride faster.

The week ended with 225.51 miles. I was just a mile and a half from matching my earlier high week this year, February 28th – March 6th. I reversed the rides this week with 6 road rides and 1 Zwift ride versus last week. I rode the Cervelo Caledonia 4 times , Lynskey R300 2 times and the Blue Norcross AL 1 time. I need 214.1 miles to reach the 650 mile goal for March. I’ve biked every day starting February 17th.

3-20-2022 SportTracks Week Bike Rides Summary
3-20-2022 SportTracks Week Bike Rides Summary

With the nice weather I tried my long sleeve polyester T-shirt with a short sleeve jersey over it and no wind jacket. After warming up the combination was comfortable even with the stiff wind. I have 3 different color T-shirts and once the weather gets more spring like I’ll wear this duo. Weather conditions for today’s bike ride: start 74 (humidity 33%, dew point 43), clear, wind SE 14 mph gusts 24; finish 75 (humidity 29%, dew point 41), fair, wind SE 22 mph. Monday and Tuesday may be too wet to ride ride outside.

My legs got a workout starting at the right turn onto Valley Ranch Bend Drive all the way back to the end of the ride. I shifted gears several times (remembering I was on the Lynskey with mechanical shifting) when the wind was gusting. The last 10 miles were the hardest, especially when I rode east. On the southbound US 59 frontage road passing traffic provided a little relief from the wind as they blocked it for a second or two.

I wasn’t the only cyclist out. I passed one in Trailwood Village and another on Hamblen road.

Strava told me I am the Local Legend on VR Drag Northbound. I don’t ride Valley Ranch Parkway north as often as the south bound direction. My 2 efforts on this segment earned the local legend.

Reordered Some Streets, More March Wind, Cobbles Awaited

Texbiker.net Posted on March 19, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 19, 2022

As I waited for the temperature to move higher I watched the Milano -Sanremo bike race on GCN+. Almost 300 K, a lot longer than I planned on riding today. I chose the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route because the mileage improved the likelihood of a 200+ mile week. I rearranged some of the streets order from the usual order for this route putting Walden towards the end instead biking there before going east over Lake Houston. It all began at 11:22 AM and finished at 2:26 PM after biking 39.09 miles in 2:56:44. I rode the Cervelo Caledonia bike. The week now totals 197.59 miles with 15.52 miles in Zwift and the rest road miles. For the month I am up to 407.1 road miles towards the 650 mile goal.

This was the first ride on this route in 2022. The last time was October 26th, 2021. Today was slightly shorter and slower.

When I awoke this morning it was 41 degrees but the forecast promised mid 70’s by the afternoon. At the start it was up to 67 with little wind. I dressed accordingly with shorts, a long sleeve T-shirt, short sleeve jersey, and a wind jacket. Those were good choices once I warmed up. Plenty of sun during the ride as it slowly warmed to 72 at the end of the bike ride. The wind increased to 11 mph from the north. The headwind was hard as I pedaled to Ramsey Road. After making the turn there I mostly had a tailwind except riding north on FM 2100 to Huffman.

My hopes that Fairlake Lane returned to a smooth road came to an end as I arrived. It felt like riding on cobbles from FM 1960 to Old Atascocita Road. You can see the road in the video. Maybe new asphalt will arrive before my next ride.

The late start lowered the chances of seeing other cyclists but I saw three. Two made the video, one didn’t.

Over the 39 miles I shifted the RD 29 times. I think this is more than what I would shift on the Canyon Endurace with mechanical shifting. I like the ease of eTap. The AXS.SRAM.com link to today’s bike ride. I spent the most time in the 35×15 gear combination at 1:33:48. Next was the 35×13 at 1:01:15. The headwind accounted for much of the 35×15 time. Riding west on FM 1960 I used the 35×13 mostly. I started in the 35×24 gear and used 6 different combinations.
