About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Prominent Galveston doctor killed while riding her bike, police say; Investigators are seeking answers

Rilwan Balogun | www.click2houston.com

GALVESTON, Texas – Galveston police say two people driving to watch Friday’s sunrise at the end of the Seawall discovered the body of 67-year-old Dr. Nancy Hughes.

Investigators say Hughes’ bicycle was next to her. The two people tried calling for help but Hughes died from her injuries before receiving aid.

The well-known doctor specialized in osteoporosis and internal medicine. According to her website, she’s the second-generation physician “providing care for the Galveston community.”

Her father, Dr. Edward James Lefeber also provided care to the people of Galveston back in 1939, the website stated.

Authorities say officers closed the …

Galveston mourns loss of well-known doctor in seawall hit-and-run

By JOHN WAYNE FERGUSON | www.galvnews.com

Nancy Lefeber Hughes, a well-known and respected island doctor, died Friday morning in what police said was a hit-and-run crash on Seawall Boulevard.

Hughes’ sudden death shocked and saddened Galveston residents, many of whom were patients at her private practice on Holiday Drive on the island’s East End.

Islanders mourned not only the loss of a woman held in seemingly universal high regard, but of one a very few independent physicians on the island.

No arrests had been made Friday and police said they were seeking the public’s help to find the driver involved in the crash.

Hughes, 67, was riding a bicycle just after 6 a.m. on the far east end of Seawall Boulevard when she was struck by a vehicle, police said. …

Two-Mile Bike Lane Installation Underway

richardsontoday.com

Installation work began this week on new bike lanes along Spring Valley Road between Grove Road and Jupiter Road. The new lanes will bring the total miles of bike lanes in Richardson to more than 25, on 14 different streets.

The City utilizes two different designs for bike lanes, a buffered bike lane and a bike lane adjacent to on-street parking, and both types will be present along Spring Valley depending on the nearby surroundings (on-street parking is kept where homes face the street, and in cases where removing the parking would create a hardship for an adjacent school, park, church or business).

Richardson was the first city in the DFW area to be awarded the “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation by the League of American Bicyclists in 2015. Visit the City’s Bicycle Facilities web page at www.cor.net/bike to learn more about bike lanes and cycling in Richardson, and to see the City’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Trailways Plan. …

Exchanged Climbing For 26 mph Gusts. Zwift Tour of Watopia Stage 3 Downtown Titans

Texbiker.net Posted on March 18, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 18, 2022

As I watched the Koksijde Classic race on GCN+ I checked my local weather from time to time. Instead of going up the temperature dropped below 60 and the wind came from the NW at 16 mph with 26 mph gusts. After the raced ended I made the call to ride stage 3 of the Tour of Watopia rather than battle another day of strong wind as well as the chill. I chose group C riding a route new to me, “Downtown Titans.” Zwift’s February 2022 update included this route as an event-only route that awards an achievement badge.

Stage 3 carried the Queen Stage label which meant climbing. I wasn’t sure exactly how much climbing. According to ZwiftInsider.com and the route basics there would be 833 feet of climbing but the Zwift companion app signup showed 958 and 968. It turned out to be 958 feet over 15.46 miles. It took me 51:26 to ride that far. Most of the vertical riding came on the two KOM’s but the terrain rolled too.

Watopia Downtown Titans route profile

Most of the ride the nearby riders showed 1120 to 1136. I slotted in around 905 to 925 most of the time. I rode with a group at the start but not for long. Then I passed some and some passed me. Sometimes 3 or 4 Zwifters were near. According to ZwiftPower.com I finished 638 out of 690 in group C. Group A contained 33, group B 84, and group D 2. Stage 3 is almost finished so the larger crowds were probably earlier.

At the end of the ride I earned the route badge and Tour of Watopia 2022 MTB shoes. Two new personal records too in Zwift. From Strava: PR on Hilly KOM Forward (4:19) and PR on Titans Grove, Southbound (18:39).

When he couldn’t carry his kids, he knew he needed to get in shape.

Name: Rigo Herrera Age: 31 Hometown: Houston, Texas Occupation: Chef Time Cycling: 5 years Start Weight: 220 pounds End Weight: 140 pounds Reason for Cycling: Cycling began simply as a way to introduce cardio to my new diet and lifestyle. It quickly took over my life and became one of my all time favorite hobbies.

Before I started cycling, I had other hobbies: I played video games all day, stayed up working on cars with friends eating junk food until the bright morning hours, and avoided any sleep or rest. My body ran on energy drinks and hot chips.

I had always had weight issues. It was a big issue when I had my first daughter because I didn’t have the stamina to play with her or keep up with anything she wanted to do. We had all our kids back to back, so my wife would have all the …

I Just Thought Tuesday’s Wind Was Strong. Today’s Wind 22 mph, 33 mph Gusts

Texbiker.net Posted on March 17, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2022

I just thought the wind was strong on Tuesday. It was even stronger for today’s bike ride. From the south at 22 mph with 33 mph gusts. I chose a route riding into that wind because it’s Thursday and the previous 2 Thursday’s I rode it. Why not make it three Thursdays in a row. I altered the “Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden” route a little from the previous ones. At Madera Run Parkway instead of continuing south to Greens Road I turned right on Madera Run riding to Woodland Hills Drive where I turned left. This gave me a slight rest from the brutal headwind on Timber Forest. But biking south on Woodland Hills and then east on Greens Road required all the power my legs could muster. I rode up to the railroad overpass construction on Timber Forest adding an incline to the headwind. Not easy. But making the u-turn there most of the way back to Kingwood a tailwind helped me.

At Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 two cyclists made a left turn from FM 1960. One of them, a lady, yelled the headwind was hard but the tailwind was great. I agreed. I think she thought I was about to ride east over Lake Houston, not continue north on Atascocita Shores. Biking over Lake Houston would’ve exposed me to the wind big time. Later I saw another cyclist on Waterpoint Lane in Kings River. He was riding into the wind.

As I got ready to leave on the bike ride the weather app I check wasn’t pulling up the conditions not alerting me to the severe wind. I looked at another app but it wasn’t clear on the wind omitting the wind gusts speed. I rolled away at 11:12 AM into the wind. I finished at 2:03 PM. Today I rode the Lynskey R300 bike while the previous 2 rides was on the Cervelo Caledonia.

A summary comparison of the three rides on today’s route in 2022. My average speed was lower today probably because of the headwind. The tailwind part of the ride wasn’t fast enough to recover the speed lost. The Lynskey doesn’t have the shifting data like The Cervelo does. I had a shifting error at one point when I tried to shift gears like as I would on the Cervelo ending up in the wrong gear combination. I flipped the left brake lever to go to a lower great but almost shifted to the big chainring instead. I caught my mistake before the chain moved but there wasn’t time to make the correct rear change before stopping for a red light.

3-17-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita - Balmoral - Walden
3-17-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden

I moved slightly ahead of the pace I need to reach the 650 mile goal for March with today’s 34.72 miles. I’m up to 368.1 road miles. For the week I stand at 142.98 miles. A cold front probably will pass through early Friday morning. Not sure if the weather will be okay to ride outside.

Today’s ride weather conditions: start 70 (humidity 73%, dew point 61), cloudy, wind SE 22 mph; 74 (humidity 67%, dew point 62), partly cloudy, wind S 22 mph gusts 33 mph. I wore another long sleeve performance fabric T-shirt under a short sleeve jersey. I felt comfortable with a light wind shell jacket. One drawback on the jacket, no side pocket to hold the GoPro. I used the big back pocket which wasn’t as handy. Sometimes it was hard finding the GoPro in that pocket. Twice today the GoPro froze up requiring me to hold the power button for 10 seconds or more.

Strava reported a 2nd fastest time on Northbound Sprint (1:45). That was with the tailwind.
