About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ball Pit to Bike Park

By: Lawrence Colvin | www.imba.com

How to Rally a Community Around Your Dig In Project

The Weatherford Mountain Bike Club (WMBC) hosted a soft opening for “The Pit” Kid’s Mountain Bike Skills Area and Trail in downtown Aledo on Saturday, March 5, 2022. The purpose of the opening was to get the wheels (both kids and adults, novices to experts) on the dirt, pack down the trail and receive positive and critical feedback on what we’ve built to date.

The Pit is a dormant tennis/basketball court located at the Downtown Aledo Community Center. The Pit surface resides approximately 30 feet below the nearby community center within the confines of steep slopes on two sides. The city researched resurfacing the court surface, but to do so was cost-prohibitive and exceeded the parks department’s annual budget. …

Where Are You March Wind? Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on March 16, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 16, 2022

The March wind let up for today’s bike ride settling in at 4 mph. My legs were relieved. I tried to watch a bike race before starting today’s bike ride but the connection failed. I’ll watch the end of them later as I avoid spoilers on Twitter. I got rolling at 10:51 AM, earlier than usual for this time of the year. Riding the Cervelo Caledonia I chose a northerly route, “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood”. This was only the second time for this route in 2022, I would’ve thought it would be 3 or 4 times. I finished at 1:18 PM biking 33.43 miles in 2:21:39. This put my March road miles at 333.3 and ahead of the pace I need to reach my 650 mile goal with 51%. The week is doing good with 108.25 miles. If the weather behaves like the forecast says a 200 mile week is possible.

It was a little chilly at the start but with the 4 mph wind it wasn’t as noticeable as yesterday with the stronger wind. My legs took a couple of miles to warm up to where I didn’t notice the chill. I wore a new performance fabric long sleeve T-shirt under a short sleeve jersey. I was comfortable and the wicking kept the moisture flowing away. It will interesting to see how the T-shirt works when the temperature is in the 80’s and no jacket. I’m thinking sunscreen properties. I like the loose sleeves over the arm sleeves snug fit. Weather conditions: start 68 (humidity 57%, dew point 52), fair, wind variable 4 mph; finish 75 (humidity 46%, dew point 52), fair, wind W 4 mph.

It’s a good thing I check the sensors before leaving. The cadence sensor wasn’t connecting to the Bolt computer. I tested the battery and it was all used up. I replaced it and the sensors connected quickly.

A lot more shifting the RD on today’s bike ride according to AXS.SRAM.com, 51 shifts. I thought about changing gears as I approached intersections where I stopped. Climbs were another shift situation. Thanks to less wind I spent more time in the 35×13 gears at 1:14:14 and 48:48 in the 35×15 gear. The change is quick making last minute decisions to shift easier. My 14.2 mph average speed helped by the lower wind speed was good.

At Rock Creek Drive and Northpark Drive the brown and white dog did not appear. Watch the video for my comment on why.

Longview to host Olympians at state’s largest BMX event of year

By Michael Cavazos | www.news-journal.com

Longview is set to host the state’s largest BMX event of the year next month, and at least two Olympians are scheduled to attend.

The third round of the 2022 USA BMX Freestyle Series will be held at Dodson Action Sports Complex at Ingram Park. The event, which is set April 1-3, will feature amateur and professional competitions.

“It’s really exciting. It’s going to be awesome to watch them ride the park,” said Brian Dodson, who helped bring the skatepark to Longview and for whom the facility is named. “They’re going to ride the park totally different than anyone else. For anyone who’s never seen live BMX riding or been able to go to any competitions where there are professionals, they need to come check this out.”

Gravel Without Gravel, Pleasant FM 1960 Surprise, March Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2022

March wind played havoc with today’s bike ride. It all began at 11:25 AM as I rolled away on the Cervelo Caledonia. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route going south and east. The sun was out and the temperature hung at 67 degrees. The wind was friendly getting to FM 2100 mostly but getting back to Kingwood was a battle. After riding 33.68 miles my legs were toast from fighting the NW 14 mph wind and 24 mph gusts. Whenever I got out in the open the wind pushed me whatever direction it wanted. I finished at 2:02 PM one tired cyclist.

299.9 road miles so far in March, 46% of the way to my 650 mile goal. Making up lost miles from last week’s chilly weather.

This marked the 5th time biking this route in 2022. Today’s ride fit the average of the other 4 times. Not sure if the other 4 rides endured the March wind like today.

3-15-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita - Walden - Huffman Route
3-15-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Route

A big surprise when I made the turn onto Fairlake Lane as you can see in the video. Rough road for about a mile. I’ll need to give the repairs some time to fix it. Almost like gravel without gravel.

Not the only cyclist out today. You can see him in the video.

A pleasant surprise at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960. Check the video.

I dressed warmly with shorts, a new Bellwether Charcoal Alterra long sleeve jersey under a Bellwether wind jacket. In the beginning my legs were chilly but after a couple of miles and some sunshine they warmed up. The wind jacket made a difference. Weather conditions: start 67 (humidity 46%, dew point 45), fair, wind NW 12 mph; finish 71 (humidity 40%, dew point 46), fair, wind NW 14 mph gusts 24 mph.

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com activity report for the ride I shifted the RD 26 times. The most used gears were 35×15 for 1:15:55 and 35×13 for 1:05:51. The 35×15 was on the way back to Kingwood into the wind. A tailwind allowed me to shift to the 35×13. I think I am shifting more because it is easy to.
