About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Downtown bike shop sees more customers, and gas prices aren’t the only reason

Author: Sarah Duran | www.kens5.com

SAN ANTONIO — With sunny days and warmer temperatures ahead, the store manager at Blue Star Bicycling Company said more customers are coming into the downtown shop to purchase or rent out their next ride on two wheels.

He said rising gas prices have also led some people to wander in.

“There’s been a little bit of talk about the high gas prices,” said Geoff Lindsey, store manager.

The statewide gas price average in Texas is $4 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA. Regardless of the recent increase, Lindsey said gas prices are a constant issue and have led many living in the downtown area to use a bike to commute around. He knows other …

Tailwind, Headwind, Dog Chase Biking to Roman Forest and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on March 14, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 14, 2022

This week starts off warmer than last week. Today is Pi day, March 14 or 3.14. The bike ride began at 11:22 AM riding the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS bike. It felt great riding outside after Zwifting most of last week. I rode north along US59 to Tavola where I turned to the east to ride through Roman Forest. I call this the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. The last time I rode this route was October 27th, 2021. I didn’t think it had been that long ago. The ride distance came in at 41.13 miles to get me back on track to reach my 650 mile goal for March. I’m up to 266.2 miles now. Riding time of 2:57:08.

Getting to Roman Forest wasn’t too hard thanks to the SE 13 mph wind but the ride back was much harder. The hardest section was on Valley Ranch Parkway from the southbound US59 service road to FM 1314. Stretches of road exposed to the wind (see the video for the flags at New Caney ISD football stadium) plus the rolling small hills into the wind. I shifted to an easier gear for that section. According to AXS.SRAM.com I changed the rear derailleur 30 times during the ride. The majority of the time I used the 35×15 gears with 35×13 next.

At Rock Creek Drive and Northpark Drive the missing brown and white dog was back. He chased me as I rode west on Northpark to the usual spot where he stops. I didn’t see the brown dog.

Weather conditions: start 70 (humidity 73%, dew point 61), partly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph; finish 76 (humidity 62%, dew point 62), overcast, wind SE 13 mph. I wore a new Bellwether Alterra long sleeve jersey under a wind breaker jacket. No need for leg warmers thank goodness. This jersey is a soft fabric, sleeves are the right length, it was longer than the jacket but that is okay. The rear pockets are different: two vertical ones with a zipper and one left side horizontal with a zipper. I was comfortable and the jersey and jacket combination went well. I used the jacket pocket to hold the GoPro camera.

Tour of Watopia Stage 2 “Stacked Flats” on Triple Flat Loops Route

Texbiker.net Posted on March 13, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 13, 2022

I wimped out on biking outside today. After church the temperature hovered around 60 degrees so I decided to ride Stage 2 of the Tour of Watopia after watching the finish of Paris – Nice, Tirreno-Adriatico, and Profronde Van Drenthe. Zwift named stage 2 “Stacked Flats” but there was some climbing on the just released Triple Flat Loops route, 535 feet of climbing. The distance totaled 22.67 miles which I rode in 1:10:46. This was faster than yesterday’s longer time over a shorter distance. For now this route is only for events. The route map and profile is below. ZwiftInsider.com described the route as “Originally published as Zwift Insider’s first Rebel Route in April 2019, “Triple Flat Loops” covers all three of Watopia’s “flat” routes, including Fuego Flats’ Tick Tock, Volcano Flat, and of course the classic Flat route. Zwift’s February 2022 update included this route as an event-only route that awards an achievement badge.” The route basics from ZwiftInsider.com: Length: 33.9 km (21.1 miles), Elevation: 134 m (440‘), Lead-In: 2.4 km (1.5 miles).

This was the first day for stage 2 and the 3:02 PM group B included 848 listed. It didn’t take long for the flyers to get away. I stayed with a large group for a while but then it thinned out leaving me in the 720 to 740 positions. My legs felt good and I held what I considered a strong pace. Overall I averaged 19.2 mph. On some of the downhills I hit a 33 mph max speed. I concentrated on pedaling but I did look at some of the scenery on the route. Lots of sand along the road, portions went under the water, and some wooden bridges.

I went to Zwiftpower.com to see results from stage 2. I came in at 441 out of 460 in group B. I did not set the fastest pace. Group A shows 302 (lower than I expected), Group C 205, and Group D 19 (women only). The fastest rider in Group B finished in 46:50. Each group rode a different route.

3-13-2022 ZwiftPower Tour of Watopia Stage 2 Group B Results

Stage 2 runs through March 16th. Another reason I rode the stage today; the weather forecast points to 70 degree days next week and not much rain. I want to ride outside which meant possibly missing stage 2. Not sure when I will ride stage 3. I don’t want to miss any of the 5 stages but I need to reach my 650 mile road mile goal for March and I’m at 225 miles now leaving 425 miles.

This week i rode each day, 6 on Zwift and 1 outside. The week summary:

Two top results in Strava: 2nd fastest time on The Esses Reverse (Zwift Insider verified) (3:01) and 3rd fastest time on The Esses Reverse (Zwift Insider verified) (3:04).
