About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Electric bikes get second look as the borderland grapples with gas prices

By Emmanuel Esparza | kvia.com

EL PASO, Texas – At a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour, e-bikes can only go so fast. But their popularity is soaring as gas prices rise.

El Paso businesses are offering various models. Electric bikes provide you the ability to pedal like a traditional bike but give you added power to go longer distances or climb steeper hills without getting tired.

Electric bikes can cost between $1,000 to $10,000 or higher.

ABC 7 spoke to a bike expert at Crazy Cat Cyclery, who said they have new and used models that range in tiers and prices.

Harley-Davidson known more for gas-powered motorcycles has joined in on the trend – developing their own line of e-bikes.

More people pedaling past the pump amid soaring gas prices

Alicia Barrera | www.ksat.com

Transportation bicycling has become more popular throughout the years, Small Planet E-bike says

SAN ANTONIO – Pain at the pump has many considering different ways of getting around town. As the Russian-Ukraine war continues, there’s no telling how high the prices at the pump will soar or when it will end. AAA lists Texas’ gas price average at $3.93.

“We saw this exact same thing happen when the bubble popped in 2008 and 2009 and when gas prices were over $4,” Marty Schlesinger said. Schlesinger is the co-owner of Small Planet E-bike located in the King William District. …

More North Texans Considering Getting Around On Bikes Due To Surge In Gas Prices

By Alexis Wainwright | dfw.cbslocal.com

ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – With gas prices around $4.00 per gallon, some North Texans are seriously considering other forms of transportation to get around, including riding a bike.

They are weighing their options to see the best way to save money when it comes to transportation.

“We’re back up and running, bikes are back. We’re ready for the peak season,” Trek store manager Del Valley said.

A year after a bike shortage, there are …

A Few Clouds, Light Wind On Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2022

Before today’s bike ride I checked the battery on my GoPro and it wouldn’t turn on. I plugged it into the charger and after a few seconds the screen came on showing 1% battery level. My first thought was no video on today’s ride but I put the extra battery on the charger and by the time I dressed, ate a snack, applied sunscreen the extra battery was fully charged. I replaced the other battery and got ready to go. Good thing I checked the GoPro before leaving.

I decided I would ride the same route as last Thursday, “Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden” but alter a few streets. I wanted to avoid W. Lake Houston Parkway from Madera Run Parkway north to Aerobic Drive because of the heavy traffic. I also rode through Woodridge Forest which I didn’t do last week. Today’s ride covered 34.71 miles, a little longer than last week at an average speed of 14 mph also higher than last week.

3-10-2022 YTD Rides Summary Atascocita - Balmoral - Walden
3-10-2022 YTD Rides Summary Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden

Rolling out of the driveway at 11:39 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia sunshine felt good. This was the first ride outside since last Sunday due to chilly weather. While I stayed inside I rode Zwift to keep my biking streak since February 17th. By the 2:21 PM finish the sunshine lasted and the temperature warmed up from 64 at the start to 72. Wind was light coming from the E at 6 mph when I finished. The Cervelo moved nicely through the wind. I enjoy Zwifting but I prefer the outside riding. Today felt good. My legs felt good and powered up when I called on them. The link to the SRAM AXS ride report. Once I got up to speed not much shifting during the mostly flat ride.

I dressed for the 64 degrees with shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, wind jacket, but half finger gloves. I counted on the sun to keep my fingers warm. I looked at the black jacket after finishing the ride and saw numerous salt stains from sweating. Weather conditions: start 64 (humidity 52%, dew point 46), a few clouds, wind NE 4 mph; finish 71 (humidity 38%, dew point 44), a few clouds, wind E 6 mph.

The route passed through the road construction at FM 1960 on the west side of Lake Houston as you can see in the video. A little progress but no concrete poured yet. Maybe by the end of March? I rode closer to the railroad overpass construction on Timber Forest to check the progress. This is in the video. No big changes but some movement.

I claimed the Local Legend in Strava on Timber Forest Crosses 1960. Set a personal record PR on Balmoral Greens eastbound (4:34).

Proposed Houston bike path near Herman Park to fill gap in network

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Commissioner Rodney Ellis plans on presenting the plan for approval March 22.

Plans are in the works to close a major gap in Houston’s bike network that will connect more people to the Texas Medical Center, NRG Park and several other places south of downtown Houston.

Rodney Ellis, commissioner for Harris County’s Precinct 1, is planning to use precinct funds to widen the narrow sidewalk along Almeda Road between Old Spanish Trail and Holly Hall Street. Work could start as early as May on the mile-long stretch, which will be transformed into a 10-foot wide shared-use path similar to others in the area and along the bayous that can be used for those who walk, roll, ride or run. The current design is prohibitive if multiple people are on the sidewalk at once, which could force those on …

Brisk Zwift Ride With The PACK on Electric Loop

Texbiker.net Posted on March 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 9, 2022

The PACK and I set off riding the Makuri Islands Electric Loop route at 12:25 PM today for 60 minutes. The leader said there were 252 in the group riding. For a change I stayed in a group in between the few way out front and the blob around the ride leader. No fence so everyone was free to ride as fast as they wanted though the leader encouraged people to stay close to him (G. Alexander). This was the second time (previously on 2/18/2022) riding this route but this ride covered more distance and time. On the previous ride I rode 12.53 miles in 48:25. Today’s ride covered 20.22 miles in 1:00:43.

No major climbs today just rolling hills for a total of 495 feet of climbing. With this amount of climbing I kept my speed around 20 mph and maxed out at 27 mph. The effort was high enough to produce sweat which I wiped off with a handy towel.

My music today was 70’s on 7 at SiriusXM. The tempo helped me keep the cadence high. I sang along with a few songs. Only one momentary disconnect with OBS Studio sending the livestream to YouTube.

Outside temperature was 53 at the start and 55 at the finish. Why I rode Zwift. Tomorrow the temperature may get to the mid 70’s for my only ride outside this week if the forecast is correct.

ZwiftInsider.com describes the route “Released in Zwift’s February 2022 update, Electric Loop is a flat, short circuit similar to Twilight Harbor, but in the opposite direction.” Route basics: Length: 8.9 km (5.5 miles), Elevation: 29 m (95‘), Lead-In: 0 km ( miles). Thus today’s ride was almost 4 laps.

Six top results in Strava, probably from the faster pace than the 2/18/2022 ride.
