Officially, Chris Podzemny is a former employee for the City of Amarillo (COA), having worked as an environmental inspector at the Osage Water Treatment Plant. These days, Podzemny is still doing a lot of work for the Amarillo community.

Saturday March 5, 2022, 115 km (71 miles) – Total so far: 2,482 km (1,542 miles) I was off the official bike route today cause yesterday’s route was not what I liked. I rode most of the day on Rt 105, then took FM 770 to Kountze to get back on the route. In hindsight, at Navasota, I should have just rode Rt 105 all the way to FM 770 and avoided the Sam Houston Forest all together.

Pretty flat terrain today and I’m starting to see swampy areas and lots of pine trees and bayou signs. A guy on the side of the road was selling crawfish, they look like mini lobsters.

Saturday March 5, 2022, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 689 miles (1,109 km) Another good night of sleep in Marfa. I would definitely visit that campground again. When I woke up it was pretty cold but they had free coffee in the office. I eventually got going and packed up. A couple of people stopped by to chat about my trip. I rode the half mile into town to look for some food and eventually settled on Buns and Roses. It was popular and they were a little understaffed so it took a good hour to get my breakfast completed. I was rolling by 945, just in time for the Westwind to get serious. As I left town there was a sign that said no services for 74 miles. They weren’t kidding. The road was flat for the whole journey but the serious wind made it feel like I was constantly going uphill. I took a few pictures but mainly kept my head down and tried to pedal through the wind. 23 mph Wind 29 mph Gusts Didn’t Blow Away 228 Mile Week

Afternoon start on today’s bike ride after church and watching portions of the Paris – Nice stage 1 bike race. The wind didn’t let up much from yesterday at the 1:55 PM start and by the time I finished at 3:25 PM it got stronger. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike around Kingwood Streets. The theme of the ride was reverse the streets. A couple of streets I’ve never rode in the opposite direction. The ride was almost all flat except for two hills that I ride down but not up. I was out of the saddle for both of them today. Along with wind it was in the upper 70’s again today under a mostly cloudy sky.

The ride distance today was 18.27 miles. This put the week’s total at 228 miles with an outside ride each day. This is the first 200 mile week in 2022. March biking miles stands at 190.37, 29% of the 650 mile goal. Today was the fourth time riding Kingwood Streets in 2022. Year to date I biked 1,234 miles. 2022 trails 2021 by 161 miles.

What the weather was like for the bike ride: start 79 (humidity 73%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind S 18 mph gusts 24 mph; finish 77 (humidity 78%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind S 23 mph gusts 29 mph. I wore another long sleeve performance fabric T-shirt under a short sleeve jersey. With the strong wind it felt good and I didn’t get too warm.

These are four of the five Strava Top Results from today’s bike ride: PR on Dead Man’s Hill Sprint (36s), 2nd fastest time on Super Secret 4×4 Shortcut (1:04), 2nd fastest time on Kingwood Lakes to Woodland Hills (5:20), 2nd fastest time on Barrington to River Grove (2:11). I didn’t know I could get these.

Marathon Texas to Marfa Texas. 59 miles. 1726 ft of gain: Oh yeah, the wind does blow from the west!

Friday March 4, 2022, 59 miles (95 km) – Total so far: 615 miles (990 km) Not the best night of sleep but that’ll happen occasionally. I think my body is getting used to riding a bike again. My back and arms and shoulders are a bit sore at night. I woke up at 4 AM to go to the bathroom and the stars were pretty amazing. It was in the upper 40s when I woke up but still felt pretty cold. I finally forced myself out of my sleeping bag and started packing things up around 730. I went to the oasis Café for some enchilada and egg breakfast which was delicious. The first 20 miles of my ride were pleasant enough but still mentally boring. I had a slight tail and it felt like I was moving along pretty good. Friday March 4, 2022, 115 km (71 miles) – Total so far: 2,367 km (1,471 miles) Pretty uneventful day through rolling farmlands and then entered the Sam Houston National Forest. I thought that would be a quiet day but unfortunately there were too many trucks on that road. I got off it (and the bicycle route) and headed SE to Cleveland on a quiet road. In a hotel again, no campground here. The National Forest was a disappointment since they had campgrounds but the trucks were annoying. The hotel lady said they use that road to avoid the scales, too bad.

March Winds, New Kit Combo, 13 RD Shifts

Today’s bike ride started at 10:14 AM, early for me so far this year. The temperature was a nice 74 degrees, maybe the warmest temperature at the start of a bike ride so far this year. Before leaving I watched the women’s and men’s Strade Bianche road races from Italy. Many sections of gravel and dirt roads. Great races from GCN+. I chose to ride my “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route and go through the construction zones on the west side of Lake Houston at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960. I made through them without problems though I needed to wait for traffic to clear riding back from the east where the barriers eliminate the shoulder to get in the center lane to turn left onto Atascocita Shores Drive.

At the start I needed 24 miles to hit 200 for the week and the 33.32 miles I biked pushed me over that with 209.75. March is up to 172.09 miles, 26% of the way to my 650 mile goal. According to my SportTracks log this is the first time using this route in 2022.

March wind arrived for the bike ride this morning. 18 mph with 25 mph gusts at the start meant a headwind until I reached FM 2100. By the time I finished at 12:50 PM the wind speed dropped to 14 mph with 23 mph gusts. The hardest time was going west over Lake Houston. The wind gusts kept pushing the bike to the right with the crosswind. One drawback to 50mm rims, they catch the wind. It wasn’t like that riding east because the concrete barrier to my right block some of the wind.

I tried a new kit combination wearing shorts, a short sleeve jersey with a red long sleeve performance fabric T-shirt underneath. The sleeves were about an inch shorter than I prefer but better than too long sleeves some Pearl Izumi jerseys had. Not having a zipper on the T-shirt kept the heat in which came in handy as I rode across Lake Houston with the cool wind blowing. Overall I’m pleased and the T-shirt was worth the $12.50 it cost. I will use the combination again, maybe tomorrow when it should be about 80 degrees.

Four other cyclists crossed my route, more than I expected with the 10:14 start time.

The Cervelo continues to please me. It rode quietly as I pedaled only making sounds when I coasted from the rear when as the ratchet whirled. I didn’t shift much because the route is pretty flat. I need to get used to thinking of situations to shift that previously I didn’t bother to because of the effort. The eTap system shifts quickly. I shifted one time while stopped and when I started pedaling the gear changed quickly without missing a beat. Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. According to the ride report I shifted the rear derailleur 13 times during the ride. I rode in the rear 15T gear for 2:03:03. Data, data, data!
