About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A few months before the pandemic, Chris Mathews was 20 miles into a 32-mile ride with his bicycle club when he lost all strength in his legs and body.

Chris, then 72, moved over and signaled for others to pass. Then his mind became a "complete fog." He stopped pedaling, slumped over his handlebars and crashed into his wife, Natalie.

Chris landed face down on the pavement, breaking his collarbone. Natalie fractured her kneecap.

"I know what happened because the whole event was being videoed by the ride leader with his action camera," said Chris, who lives in Plano, Texas. "I got to see it many, many times. It was pretty gruesome."

A pacemaker in his chest also recorded the episode and showed he’d …

Start The Week, End The Month Bike Ride to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on February 28, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 28, 2022

Biking outside started the week and ended February’s biking. I waited for the temperature to reach my 60 degree threshold. I wanted to ride to get closer to my February goal and thought about riding even if it didn’t get to 60. As I dressed for the ride the temperature hit 60 and by the 12:25 PM wheels down it was 61. I chose to ride north because of the construction at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 to the south and to go at little farther than that route. I estimated the would be 34 to 35 miles but I added a couple of streets to the beginning and rode new streets in Valley Ranch and Forest Colony. The ride distance came in at 37.65 miles. My total road miles for February now stand at 287, 13 miles short of my goal. Counting Zwift miles I rode 452.45 miles. Not bad considering the days off for 2 cataract surgeries and recovery days. Last month my total was 591.76. Today’s route to the north and back was “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch”. This was the second time riding this route in 2022 though the previous ride didn’t follow the streets I added today. I have a biking streak going since February 17th.

It felt good biking outdoors. The Cervelo glides through the air and over the road with great finesse. The eTap shifting is becoming more muscle memory though I should shifted more today.

As I rode to the Rock Creek and Northpark Drive intersection I saw a car in the right lane with flashers on. A person walked from the rock landscape feature to the car. This is the place where the 2 dogs stayed but I haven’t seen for several weeks. I wonder if this person is the who fed them. If the dogs are gone why did the person walk to the rock feature?

Weather today finally warmed up and probably will continue to get warmer as the week progresses. Today’s bike ride weather: start 61 (humidity 32%, dew point 31), mostly clear, wind N 7 mph; finish 64 (humidity 26%, dew point 29), partly cloudy, wind 6 mph. The sun was good but I still needed to bundle up. I wore shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I ordered a red windbreaker jacket from Bellwether to replace the one I wore today. It has seen many rides. The reflective markings have disappeared after many washings and a strip along the zipper came loose.

Another layover day in Fredericksburg Texas: Still too cold for me!

Friday February 25, 2022 I woke up with every intention of hitting the road for a short 30 miles but it was so darn cold I wasn’t in the mood. I was invited to breakfast with Opie, Brett and Dale. Brett owns the hotel I am staying in. They took me to a great breakfast spot and I had a fantastic meal. Thanks again Brett. After breakfast, Opie and I went to load up a deer that Opie shot the day before. We took the deer to his house so he could hang it for a while before it was time for butchering. While I was at his house, I met his lovely wife and she made us some warm hot chocolate which helped since it was very cold outside. On the way back to …

Fredericksburg Texas to Kerrville Texas. 37 miles. 1483 ft of gain: Still cold but I got to get moving.

Saturday February 26, 2022, 37 miles (60 km) – Total so far: 118 miles (190 km) It was cold this morning but I was bound and determined to get moving. The forecast called for upper 30° weather with occasional mist. That seems doable. I slept a long time last night. I think I’m still recovering from the marathon. At about 730 I went up and had coffee in the lobby with Opie and some other guests. Opie mentioned he shot another deer last night and could use some help loading it into the pick up. I wasn’t in a hurry to get started in the cold weather so I went with him and we got it into his pick up. After Opie dropped me back off at the hotel, Ithanked him for all the hospitality. It’s been three cold days in Fredericksburg but the Texas hospitality has been very warm. I highly recommend visiting the Peach Tree Inn if you are ever in Fredericksburg There was a …

Modified Southern Tier Winter 2022

Johnson City, TX

Saturday February 26, 2022, 62 km (39 miles) – Total so far: 1,919 km (1,192 miles) It was the last of the bad weather today. Tomorrow I ride to Austin and it is supposed to be sunny and much warmer.

It drizzled the whole ride and it was just above freezing. Lots of ups and downs again today. A generally quiet road passing by many ranches. I saw lots of deer and occasionally farm animals.

When I got to town, I headed to the rv park (Roadrunner RV), hoping to get the one cabin. No luck, so in the tent I go.

Overcast, light drizzle, 3c

Austin, TX

Sunday February 27, 2022, 71 km (44 miles) – Total so far: 1,990 km (1,237 miles) A very hilly ride to Austin via the back roads. It was sunny and chilly in the morning and it turned warmer by mid afternoon. Mostly passed by ranches, wineries, and small brew places. As I got closer to Austin, the traffic picked up.

Staying in a hotel on the west side.

Sunny, 15c

Triban Weekendender Zwifting Watopia Tempus Fugit

Texbiker.net Posted on February 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 27, 2022

To get in the mode of biking I watched 3 bike race replays on GCN+ of races from earlier in the day. Then I switched to Zwift. Listening to Lauren Daigle Radio on Pandora the 3:00 PM ride began. Instead of a meetup I rode the Triban Weekendender event on the Watopia Tempus Fugit route. Rather than a set distance we rode 60 minutes. I checked my previous rides on this route and all the distances averaged slightly over 20 miles. That was my goal but to do that I needed to ride at least 20 mph. I rode 20.11 miles in 1:00:49 averaging 19.8 mph. One of the faster rides in awhile and the longest Zwift ride this week. According the ride leader “Triban” is French for tribe.

2-27-2022 Summary Rides on Tempus Fugit to date

I stayed with a group until I noticed the livestream stopped and I tried to get it started again but OBS Studio crashed. While I messed the group rode away from me. Not too long after that I caught up to S. Balaghi. We rode together switching places until the last minute of the ride when he rode ahead of me. I tried keep up but I didn’t. I should’ve changed to a bigger gear but I don’t know if my legs would’ve responded. Before reaching the finish another Zwifter caught up to us and rode along with us for awhile and then sped up and away.

It was a good ride to wrap up the week. I rode every day, 2 outside and 5 on Zwift. One day left in February and the weather looks like it may warm up to the mid 60’s and I can ride outside. I need 51 miles to reach my 300 mile goal. I will try to get closer to the goal but I will not make it.
